In all seriousness, how does this even happen? In such a massive company is nobody really doing a basic check? It must go through so many levels of management before sign off and production.
It seems often a case that the software team works completely independently from the hardware design team, but yes something like that should have been picked up and it wouldn't surprise me if an update after launch replaces the graphic.

The irony has obviously been lost somewhere at Samsung HQ
How in the world did this make it all the way to become a feature for them on the Note 7? I mean how many committees and board meetings and such did this get tossed around. How much testing and user feedback did they get before deciding to add a feature that required you to remove your glasses or contacts to use it? That baffles me. Of all the new features they could add how did an iris scanner make to final product......smh

Really Samsung? Remove glasses or contacts? See, this is why Apple lets other be their guinea pigs, then they refine it. It's not always good to be first. I guess they don't think a lot of people wear glasses / contacts. SMH.

This Iris scanner reminds me of the fingerprint scanner they use in the Note 4 / S5 -- horrible! It took until the S7 until it was finally perfect.

o_O I get so sick and tired of this lame excuse. "we won't bring it out for years and years as we will get it right" when there isn't really the case. They just don't want to add certain improvements. They want to wait years and years before they bring it out e.g. multitasking but that is only on the ipad

. It isn't about just getting it right.

Same thing with wireless charging for example, apple could of brought this out years ago but here we are still waiting.

Clearly says..

Remove glasses or contact lenses.

----

Likewise it says to avoid direct sunlight, meaning it's likely useless outdoors in sunnier climates - so essentially not something to worry about here in Ireland anyway :D. But if you lived in warmer sunnier climates could be problematic.

Well they like to drip feed things to make more money. Samsung go with everything they have at the time.

Just googling percentage of glasses wearers and was surprised it's so high

"According to the Vision Council of America, approximately 75% of adults use some sort of vision correction. About 64% of them wear eyeglasses, and about 11% wear contact lenses, either exclusively, or with glasses. Over half of all women and about 42% of men wear glasses."

That's a significant populace.

In all honesty though, don't you guys think this iris scanner will work quite well even when the user wears glasses or contacts, and outdoors, and that the text was written primarily to neutralise the inevitable complaints that will come once people find that it isn't as reliable as a (good) fingerprint scanner?

Or, all is true and it really doesn't work with contacts, in which case RIP. :D

It isn't about just getting it right? Let's be honest: Apple is held to a different standard compared to other companies. I don't think Apple wants to come out with a half bake product that is going to alienate a majority of its users (eg. remove your glasses / contacts). Why not wait another year or so to fix that problem before introducing it to the general public? Hell, even the first fingerprint scanner on the iPhone was pretty good. I am sure Apple could have came out with a Note 4/S5 implementation of the scanner with the iPhone 5. I am glad they waited.

Exactly. The longer Apple can keep people buying their stuff without significant hardware updates, the more money they save. And they are masters at this.

At the same time though, I think it's true that when they DO release new hardware features, they've always waited until they're damn sure they'll be reliable and go over well with the public. And so they probably don't mind waiting until someone else tries them first, while taking note of all the early version issues. Their brand and reputation are so strong that they can afford to do this, so why not?

Samsung can't, they've made it a part of their image to be the first to try new stuff. So it's more hit or miss for them, and lots of stuff gets scrapped over time. But lots of people are attracted to that too, being the first to try new stuff, and I exactly don't see Samsung failing horribly with their mobile business...

I agree that the iris scanner with all we know now...is simply not going to cut it. I can unlock my phone using the FP scanner before I even raise it to my face to do an iris scan.
But Apple does routinely alienate their customer base....like removing the headphone jack rumored in the iphone 7.

Sadly, everyone is going to fall in line. The removal of the headphone jack was eventually going to happen. Give it a couple of years, it will be a rarity to see a headphone jack on a high-end smartphone. I know a lot of people will doubt it, but only time will tell. Maybe in 2018, I'll find this post and quote it.

touch ID I think is one of the features that they have brillantly done and alot of other have followed suit. Force touch I think could become big and it's why IOS 10 alot of forch touch is in this update.

I don't see apple bringing out the iris scanner for one as they won't see a need for it. If I get the note 7 I doubt I would use it apart from to show people. That said plenty of time samsung bring out they scrap but at the same time plenty they keep and are very good.

Multitasking on the phone I hope apple will copy one day. They have made a good start with the ipad. Maybe they see it should only be used for that but I hope not.

no doubt next year is a big year for apple. Thats the year of maybe the biggest expection ever. Alot are expecting great things and I feel they will deliver.

The iphone 7 will be a good upgrade in terms of general upgrades. Many will disagree because of no re-design and no headphone jack. I for hope am hoping the duel camera is as good as i hope
