At first I was like wow this so small compared to my note but I', getting used to it now and coming to appreciate how easy it is to hold and how much more portable it is. Also as my note was getting more and more laggy I was using my ipod touch more and more so was getting used to the smaller screen again.

I've been playing around with my S4 more and more and it is rather awsome. Perhaps I'll finally get the full android experience.

I am also VERY happy with my S4, but since it was first announced, I always keep an eye on the Notes, but never got one.

----------

Well, I've done it.....

I'm now a Galaxy S4 owner

Equally surprising thread about my impressions coming soon! :p

Woah, that was fast, keep It coming

First ?

Anyone recommend a good battery percentage app for my status bar? I would use power toggles if there's a way to turn off Samsung's toggle bar in the notification drop down. I don't want two toggle bars there....

However, I really would like a percentage indicator for the battery. Any suggestions?

First impressions -

Device size/feel are fantastic - display/phone size ratio is absolutely phemnomenal. I dont even realize I'm using a 5" display (except for the fact that the display is big and brilliant).

I'm encountering a TON of lag....chalking it up to the fact that apps are downloading and updating and lots of things are happening, but I don't remember experiencing this much lag even when I was restoring all the apps on my HTC One. Will need to see how TouchWiz fares in day-to-day use (and if the features are useful), otherwise I may ditch it and go with NovaPrime (or even yet, root it *gulp*).

Anyways - so far pretty good. I do really like the hardware. I won't care about replacing the battery, but a positive for the removable back is the flip covers can be added without adding bulk to the phone (ala Smart Covers for the iPad).

----------

I was able to get one on my mother-in-law's upgrade. So I sold my HTC One for $450 (after eBay/PayPal fees, probably closer to $400) and bought a NEW GS4 for $250 (including tax and activation fee).

Not bad ;)

Uh oh sizzle has a GS4

HA!

You guys take this stuff too seriously. I'm a fanboy because Android doesn't get me hot and bothered....ehh.

Honestly, both the One and GS4 are great handsets. Still need time with the GS4 to test it out. Loved my One and so far the GS4 is extremely nice.

Are you on the international variant of the GS4 or the GPE?
I understand the full conversion from Touchwiz to GPE is not possible on the GS4 (a full conversion is possible on the HTC One- like even gets OTA updates from google). So you are actually flashing a packaged rom rather than the actual vanilla GPE image right?

Sorry for the Q's I've been weighing buying a used TW GS4 vs an actual GPE GS4 (new, not much of a used market on these). I'm not interested in touchwiz and want stock android. I'm wondering if it's worth the headache for saving a couple hundred bucks.

Yeah I'm using a rom basically rather than a full conversion.

You can not recieve OTA updates for the OS unlike the proper GE

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2341794

Its easy enough to install and to return back to Touchwiz if you want to.

I had the 4.3 rom but whilst everything worked my battery drained fast, so I'm trying 4.2.2 instead.

The HTC One can be converted easily if you have the T-Mobile or AT&T model. You need to convert before the 4.2.2 update rolls out or at least start the conversion by using REVONE and get S-Off on your device, and unlock bootloader from HTCDev.com

There are a few more steps in the HTC Conversion, but once done you get the genuine article rather than a rom someone has ported with additions / fixes like on the S4.

Any way to get a quick toggle for the hotspot feature? I looked in the display settings and didn't see any way to add a new toggle.... only rearrange what was already there.

BTW - love Kii. Reminds me of the iOS keyboard except with swiping

why not just download a hotspot toggle widget from the play store.

I have a toggle in the notification area, if that is what you mean.
It is on the Australian firmware.

You can add a widget for tethering/hotshot. If you pick the settings widget it gives you option to add a hotspot widget.

Can you give us some battery usage stats with it? Esp the screen on time (SOT)?

I can get an average of 5 hrs of screen on time with my One. I can get abt 7-7.5 hrs SOT if I was texting and watching videos only (in lower resolution) and while on airplane mode. Maybe near 7 hrs with airplane mode off. But using Wi-Fi rounds to abt 5 hrs with 18-20% decreases every hour. The last 10% is much less than 30 min. And less than 5 hrs if I was playing Minion Rush or anything graphic intensive.

Thx! Seems like the S4 is a lifetime companion. Repairs on the One is awful I know (1/10) with a battery inside slowly dying. S4 only flagship (and its variants) to give removable battery, microSD slot, and matched the One with the IR blaster and WiFi ac.

Short term wise, I prefer One and even Nexus 4. I like their designs. But long term wise, S4 might be the way to go esp the GE. But those Sammy software exclusives on TouchWiz are sweet too!

4 hours screen time
take it off charge at 5.15am...charge it up again about 22.30 at night

when i'm and at home

Stock battery. Mostly on wifi. MDOB rom/stock kernel, all smart features off, power saving mode enabled, auto brightness, dark themes on apps. Usage consisted of browsing, xda, pulse, instagram, FB, youtube, emails, 10 min of phone calls, and texting. No battery saving apps except greenify.

Yes you can JR, remember that you can swipe the quick toggle bar to reveal further icons, I have set my "hot spot" so that it is visible when I first reveal the notification bar.

Curses this 4.2.2 rom by Jamal is just as bad on battery for me as the 4.3 was.

I love stock android but watching the battery percentage drop so quickly on my device is a headache.

It looks like I'm going have to use Touchwiz (albeit with Nova) because it seemingly is the best for battery life by a vast margin.

Strange that the genuine GE device doesn't have the same problem that the rom does.

How bright is your screen?

I put the One on autobrightness. Usually 25-50% is efficent enough for me in the day with 25% brightness during the night. I do keep that Google Location Services turned ON just because I use BlinkFeed and the weather widget on top will say "No Location" if off. I have a Live Wallpaper with the HTC wallpaper slide show on.

Speaking of wallpaper, do you have a black theme or use black backgrounds? Helps on AMOLED. Also how is standby time? I read the S4 is much better than the One with standby. I heard Project Road Runner can help improve on 4.3 standby but I havent even got 4.2 yet! Android AND Sense really do drain batt when doing nothing. How much batt do u lose overnight?

And no battery savers? I hate those things. I tried JuiceDefender and didnt like it. Then I tried Deep Sleep Saver only to realize it was doing thousands of wakelocks on my One. Only for placebo effect. I even uninstalled it from my Nexus after using it for years. I didnt know abt wakelocks until this year. Seems airplane mode does a better job than battery savers when it comes to screen on time and standby times.

Have you tried this GE ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356276

I've been using it for quite a while now and with Faux's kernel, I was able to achieve over 6 hours of screen time. I reflashed the ROM and have been using the stock kernel since last week. This is what I was able to achieve...
edymy5ys.jpg

That was at about 75% brightness and on Unicom 3G for about 5 hours.

That is great screen on time! The only smartphone I owned to ever give me those numbers on WiFi was the iPhone 4. I would get 9-10 hrs consistently from 100% to 1% with WiFi use mostly and autobrightness that was usually dim abt 25%. Even after 3 yrs, iPhone 4 can still give me 6-7 screen on time at 50% brightness (auto off) but without playing games. And standby time was great. On airplane mode, 3 weeks to 1 month standby a couple times this year and only 11% drained after listening to music on my earphones for 12 hrs! I will be lucky to get 12 hrs music playing overall from my One and I can only get around 5 hrs WiFi browsing even on 25% brightness and airplane mode! GSMArena and Anandtech are not even close to 10 hrs WiFi browsing they claim on the One. Abt 5 hrs SOT on average for me and that's it. Abt 6-7 with text only and some videos and 4 hrs with games. I even turned off 3G/4G and kept it on 2G only and nothing changed on my One's SOT.

If I didnt hate iTunes so much for slowing down my laptop and Apple forcing me to update to iOS6 after unlocking it, I would still use my iPhone 4. But alas, I'm a primary Android user now. I need the flexibility.
