The impact on the signal and scratch possibly has me rethinking the whole aluminum phone thing. I love the fit and finish of my iPhone 5, but there's way too many posts/threads in the iPhone forum complaining about scratches.

The aluminium bezel of my iPhone 4 was actually scratched up by my bumper case!

after the s3 launch ppl were complaining alot more about than what im reading now, and look how it sold. im sure this will just push samsungs sales closer to the iphones (of individual phones). they r def on the up. korea is taking over the world, 15 years ago it was japan with Toyota etc and sony, now its Samsung with hyundai and kia.

Yes despite my dislike for their plastic phones, imo Samsung are probably the best tech manufacturing company today.

They make superb TVs, ultrabooks (series 9) and other devices and have really buried Sony, Toshiba etc halfway into the ground (although Sony appear to be digging themselves back out with their excellent products in 2013).

They would also make more of a massive dent to Apples market if they focused more on design. I just dont understand why they dont go for the jugular and really become the dominant company that they could be.

Oh my what will the tech press do if the S4 looks a lot like the S3? Seriously what an f'ng joke. I'm no fan of Samsung's phone designs but this idea that a phone needs a complete aesthetic redesign every year is ridiculous. Wasn't one of Dieter Rams principles that good design is long lasting? If Samsung likes this design language why should they change it just because the tech press gets bored easily.

Agreed, but they shouldn't change it because of the tech press. They should change it because it's freaking ugly.

After that, there's no need to change the design every year just to have a new shell. As you said, Dieter Rams railed against the American carmakers of the '50s and '60s for constantly changing the aesthetics of their cars each years, simply for fashion's sake.

The funny thing is, the exact same thing could be said of Apple right now. How many times do you see people saying if Apple would just release assorted sizes of the iPhone (say 4" and 4.5-5") or if they'd revamp iOS they'd come streaming back?

I agree that Samsung is in the position to really strike a huge blow with the release of the S4 and the Note 3 in the fall.

But Apple has been right there recently as well. They seem to be holding themselves back for some unknown reason. Maybe it's because they're worried they'll alienate their core users...I don't know. But they need to realize that consumers are a lot more tech savvy these days than they were even 2 or 3 years ago. Yeah, maybe you'll confuse people like my mom who still calls me to ask questions about her iPhone 3GS, but I really think Apple is missing the boat a bit by not listening to what consumers want and giving it to them (instead of dictating what they want to them).

I totally agree, while i love the metal kit on my Surface and my iPad i constantly have to baby it. My Galaxy phones and my Nexus 10 I don't have to be as careful when i set them down or slide them around on a surface.

I wish soft touch/rubberized metals caught on. My Droid X was clad in rubberized metal and it felt solid and just well... good.

Okay, unless it uses the exact same shell as the S3, it is not an Apple-S-progression.

People calling it an "S-like" upgrade are wrong.

If the leaks and rumors pan out, it's more like a 4S-to-5 upgrade than anything; similar design cues, larger screen, slightly larger device, some repositioning of speakers, etc.

*DISCLAIMER: I'm not thrilled about the leaks so far.

----------

Those who think it won't be plastic, you might as well begin looking elsewhere. Samsung themselves have said it will be plastic.

Sorry I don't agree. It's like iPhone 4 to 4S. 4S to 5 is a big change. 5 is so much lighter and thinner and you can immediately tell which phone is 5. If you place GS3 and GS4 side by side you won't be able to tell difference aside from screen size.

All right. Don't know what more I can say.

The Apple S upgrades use the same casing with very minor tweaks, if any. I'm talking about things you wouldn't notice unless you open up the device.

I'm not here to argue whether the 4S-to-5 upgrade is good or bad or significant or not; I'm merely pointing out, if the specs of the S4 turn out to be true (larger screen, larger device, slight redesign), it cannot be compared to an S-upgrade. If anything, it's closer to the 4S-to-5 upgrade.

If you place GS3 and GS4 side by side you won't be able to tell difference aside from screen size.

Right. 'Nuff said. With the S upgrades, you couldn't use screen size to see which is which. Just because the supposed S4 and S3 look similar, doesn't mean they are hard to tell apart. The 4 and 4S are much harder to tell apart.

That's all I'll say about that.

I think it's ugly too but I won't be buying it so don't really care. :p. just think this obsession with new aesthetics every year or aesthetics equating to innovation is ridiculous. That's not to say changing aesthetics can't also be innovative but it seems people get too hung up on whether something looks different in determining if its better or is innovative. iPhone 5 might be completely redesigned in terms of manufacturing processes. It seems like an amazing feet of engineering yet because aesthetically it doesn't look drastically different than iPhone 4/S people call it boring, not innovative etc. Completely non sensical IMO.

Your average user probably can't tell the 4S from the 5 unless they put them next to each other and look at the screen size too. Just sayin'.

Ummm...I hope that the S4 just isn't a iPhone-S-esque scheme. I'd be disappointed if so. My contract is up for renewal real soon. Might just wait on the new iPhone or Galaxy Note 3.

I don't think that people are upset that the iPhone 5 looks similar to the iPhone 4/4S. Personally I really liked that look. What I think people are upset about, me included, is the screen. Apple chose to make the screen bigger but only make it taller. That barely makes a difference. The two most common excuses I hear for this is you can't use a larger phone one handed and it won't fit in your pocket. I think both if those are bogus but that's another topic completely. The point being that only increasing the height of the screen doesn't really help people in many ways.

I hate to break it to you but if you are disappointed by a potential "S" upgrade to the S3, you will be just as disappointed when Apple inevitably releases their 5S and in a Note 3 because it will probably be similar to the S4 update

DAMN.

TIME TO SWITCH TO BLACKBERRY!

Well now I'm not sure what phone to get for my upgrade. I mean, I've had the Vibrant before and now the 4S. I'm looking for something to wow me, and I haven't found it yet.:( #firstworldproblems

I'm skeptical about how noticeable 0.19" really is....

Best move Samsung could made imo :) plenty of time to work on the s5 and push the limit.

the 4 to the 4s is the same exact shell and uses the same exact ips screen and same size.

How is the gs4 an s upgrade when its getting a bigger screen with 134 more ppi and full 1080P HD wide screen aspect ratio?

its not the same screen like the 4 to 4s and its not the same body

gs3 vs gs4
exynos 4 vs exynos 5
4.8 vs 4.99
720p vs 1080p
306ppi vs 440ppi
8mp vs 13mp

yeah that looks like a minor update alright, its the first cell phone in the world to use arms A15 cores

So now Samsung are copying Apple by giving up disappointing upgrades? Haha.

Samsung has always done this. I'm a huge Sammy fan, but people have been giving them a free pass while trashing the iPhone.

The S2 to S3 progression was basically the same.

Yes everyone knows that Apple deliver a new shell every two cycles.

Samsung have never done this though. S, S2 and S3 all completely different.

I guess people are just expecting the 4 to be different like the previous samsung phones.

It was a superb opportunity for Samsung to dent Apples market share. Instead, the S4 will probable lose market share to the Sony Z and HTC One. Iphone folks will likely stick with the iphone especially if they were not enticed by the S3. The S4 brings nothing new to them.

They still will, I dont know why your being so dismissive before the phone has even been announced!

Well if that tweet is a good indication of the design, then I'm cool with it. I wasn't digging the renders at all. I'd prefer slight modifications to the S3's design. We all pick our battles, but I never understood why so many people insist if the chassis isn't a total overhaul year after year the phone isn't worth buying. Most companies don't treat their products like that.

I can't wait to hear the actual specs and release date. I was gonna buy this thing off contract (assuming it wows me at the debut) but I just realized I'm do for an upgrade next month so it makes a lot of sense to wait, assuming it's even coming out within the next four weeks.

I think aside from the obvious bumps to the screen, camera, etc, Samsung will roll the S4 out alongside some nice accessories. I would bet actual money they roll out at least one proprietary accessory to drive sales. Perhaps the Samsung Watch that was rumored. Just taking a stab in the dark.

Minor update or not, I've never owned the GS3, so I don't care if the GS4 looks similar. I'm just glad they upped the specs anyway to be honest. Still waiting for the official unveil tomorrow to get the true information and this will be added to my list of possible next phones. Right there next to the LG Optimus Pro G (stupid name, nice looking phone).
