LOOK GUYS! It's the Samsung Galaxy S3S :D

I really hope you're not right, but I will be disappointed if they 'pull an Apple'.

I was hoping they'd step up and give us something totally new. The new BlackBerry handset looks lovely, so it is possible to design a gorgeous handset that doesn't look like an iPhone.

If the leaks are correct then I will be happy. Loved the curved design of the S3 and was hoping they wouldnt make the S4 more square.

Kinda of underwhelmed about the Samsung leaks and what the pictures/video had to show of it, basically the amazing looks of the htc and the z basically have probably out shown the sg4 IMO I mean we know in terms of technical hardware nothing much will be massively different, it's all about software , the feature the software will bring us, and then the and feel of the phone that sets andoud devices apart.

In terms of looks , htc and song have nailed it! It's upto Samsung to counter thee awesome design, and plastic will not cut it.

Then you have the awesome water resistant feature the sony has. Htc one looks like kind though, the camera and camera features look amazing! The speakers are said to be the best ever in a mobile phone device from what all the reviews are saying, the screen looks like its the best ever in a mobile device, in terms of colour, ppi etc. then you have blink feed with looks pretty interesting and brings a new look and feel to an android device etc

There is a massive step up from the one x and the one.

And judge from thos pics, Samsung need to do more than simply make the screen a bit bigger and better.

I'm about the same. I wasn't planning on upgrading yet anyway as my S3 is more than enough smartphone for me at the moment, and for me it's never about the hardware but all about the software now.

I would have liked Samsung to push the boat out a little on the design - It's not that I dislike the S3 (I don't) but it would be nice to spice the design up a little. HTC nailed it with the HTC one (imho).

The design is boring and no doubt plastic will be used again.

That being said the reason for buying an S4 is surely the hardware? Or software if you're jumping from iOS.

Coming from Apple products, it will be a bit weird buying a product that doesn't place much of an emphasis on design and materials I guess :-/

Depends what you want. I prefer polycarbonate phones as they scratch/dent less easily then phones made out of aluminum. Had Samsung taken the Glass/Aluminum route I would have passed on the S4. To me that is placing an emphasis on materials.

If it looks like the S3, that wont bother me as I like the look of the S3. Im interested in the larger higher quality screen and the extra features Samsung will bring to the table.

Okay, unless it uses the exact same shell as the S3, it is not an Apple-S-progression.

People calling it an "S-like" upgrade are wrong.

If the leaks and rumors pan out, it's more like a 4S-to-5 upgrade than anything; similar design cues, larger screen, slightly larger device, some repositioning of speakers, etc.

*DISCLAIMER: I'm not thrilled about the leaks so far.

----------

Those who think it won't be plastic, you might as well begin looking elsewhere. Samsung themselves have said it will be plastic.

Oh my what will the tech press do if the S4 looks a lot like the S3? Seriously what an f'ng joke. I'm no fan of Samsung's phone designs but this idea that a phone needs a complete aesthetic redesign every year is ridiculous. Wasn't one of Dieter Rams principles that good design is long lasting? If Samsung likes this design language why should they change it just because the tech press gets bored easily.

Not only that but the actual hardware upgrades are significant. From a quad core to an eight core CPU, double the RAM, double the screen resolution, significantly improved camera, and a lot more software features too.

They're not just doing a very minor spec bump like Apple, they're going all out and adopting the latest technology as any good Android manufacturer should.

I have high hopes for this device.

Well said.

To be fair, though, Apple doubles their RAM too during the 4S-to-5 upgrade... to a whopping 1 GB! ;)

It's 8 cores, but really its more like 2x 4 cores as I don't believe from what I have read so far at any point you can run with 8 cores active. Its either 4 fast cores or 4 slower cores.

I thought the S3 had 2gb ram or was this only some variation ?

Actually that's the one thing they should make sure they get rid of this year too.. No more specs A for this territory, specs B for this territory, Spec C for this territory. Just release a global phone with same specs please...

The iPhone 5 doesn't need 2 GB though.. I've never had to manage memory on an iOS device, whereas on all my Android devices so far - they have made me OCD with memory and background processes.....

I imagine that's a lot more effieicent than running eight cores at once and it'll still provide a performance boost (and hopefully battery life boost) over the S3. Especially since it's meant to be clocked at 1.8GHz.

I think the American variations have 2GB but the international version is 1GB.

Agreed. The only reason they do it is because have to use different chipsets for different frequencies IIRC, but they should unify it more like Apple have.

Should we really care how many cores a phone has?

tbh, I don't care about my iPhone or iPads as long as it does what I want it too. The same for the android phones that I had.

I'm more interested in the user experience, whether that requires a quad core processor or an octo-processor is immaterial. Provide a platform that works.

I'm very impressed with the Note II and the S3 regardless of the processor. If the overall form and function works for me, they won me over :)

The US version has 2gb of ram b.c I think it is dual core not quad core.

Not necessarily. Some might.

The point, however, is that this is clearly not a Apple-S upgrade, like some are saying it is. And that it's actually quite a significant upgrade even compared to the 4S-to-5 progression.

That's all.

Why is everyone hating on plastic, that's something I can't work out. Is it just because it "feels cheap"? It's significantly stronger than a phone made completely out of glass. If you dropped an iPhone 4S it's far more likely to get damaged than an S3.

As for aluminium, it looks and feels nice but scratches far more easily than plastic, so what do you do? You put it in a case (probably one made of plastic ) and never enjoy it anyway

As long as the phone is durable and the radio waves can get through the casing I don't give a crap what they make it out of. As it stands, plastic is the best material for durability and reception sustainability right now, so I'm cool with that.

I love the "S" analogy in reference to upgrades. Anytime you get a new cpu, gpu, camera, phone exclusive feature (Siri, even if it use to be in the apple store)....that is a pretty good upgrade. Look at the difference in speed between an iphone 4 and 4S....it is definitely noticeable. It may not merit an upgrade every year, but it is a worthy upgrade....and that is really what it is considered (upgrade) and not a new phone.

The 5s will have features that will appeal to some and make them upgrade from the 5. Battery life and wireless charging alone would be enough to me....even if they left everything untouched. On the other hand, a finger print scanner and NFC will not make me upgrade unless apps really incorporate NFC better than they currently are. Right now NFC can basically launch an app or turn wifi on/off. I want it to be able to actually perform functions within the app.

My point is lets look at the package as a whole. I agree the S4 looks more significant then Apple's S upgrade.

I would love a metal S4, but I'm not going to complain about a plastic one either. Going with a sexier looking phone has too many trade offs (HTC), so I'm just gonna stick with Sammy. As long as Samsung has the software down (which they have recently), it will be right at the top.

The impact on the signal and scratch possibly has me rethinking the whole aluminum phone thing. I love the fit and finish of my iPhone 5, but there's way too many posts/threads in the iPhone forum complaining about scratches.
