Welp, it's been a week since I got my S7 edge and I think it's my daily driver now. Been with the iPhone since the 3GS and have poked fun at Android users for their general jank, Yet here I am, having not used an iPhone in 7 days. Few thoughts:

- Screen is pretty good. Took the advice of someone here and switched to basic for the display to get more neutral colours
- Battery life has been mostly the same. However, my 6S was spec'd for battery life while the edge is stock with everything on. Will dig into playing around with settings now that the honeymoon is over
- For my usecase, the transition was pretty smooth. Icons are icons, regardless of which device they're on and I didn't struggle as much as I thought I would. Most apps on iOS have an Android equivalent that's just as functional
- Camera is very reliable. This was a big one for me since I like to take a lot of pictures, but am not much of a photographer. Point and shoot is important to me and until recently, iPhone was king for consistency

Battery stats below:

Also, standby for iPhone is still unmatched:

Am I the only one that loves the default display setting of the s7 edge?

The basic setting looks so flat. I know it's more natural colors, but I actually like the pop the default setting has.

I'm sure you're not. I personally also don't care for it..feels artificial. On my Nexus 6P I activate Developer Options so I can turn on sRGB Picture color mode because I find the display too saturated under normal settings.

Yeah, i don't like the over saturated look, the colors hurt my eyes after a while. I'm glad they at least offer the option to choose.

Yep same. Basic mode ALWAYS on my S7e and any other Samsung I've had.
SRGB rather than vivid on my HTC 10 and like yourself SRGB on the 6P too.

I want my content to look like it does on all my calibrated devices. I use a 100% adobe RGB & SRGB monitor everyday whilst working. I like colour accuracy.

I also like correct white balance and that being off drives me just as nuts as over saturation of colours, sadly that's where the likes of the 6p and most other (outside Samsung's flagships) amoled panels struggle as they are often very yellow or occasionally pink. I use a filter app (screen balance) to correct this but it's never as good as properly calibrated screen.

Nope. I love that setting. I don't find it oversaturated at all. If anything, it's extremely accurate when looking at photos or videos.

It seems like the S7 and the S7E is that hot girl that intrigues a lot of guys that are pretty conservative (iPhone owners) and they get a taste and realize the hot girl is insanely crazy but damn is she fun to look at and play with but miss the level of boring, easy use on their old girl. :)

I have read so many threads here and actually 2 friends that have tried the S7 and gone back.

It seems like the trendy thing to do this version and man is the S7 a great device but that iOS ecosystem has engulfed many users.

I think it's just natural human behaviour, the presumption that the grass is greener.

For how long have we heard about the 7 year hitch with marriages etc... ? It's just with technology the commitment isn't as binding and the repercussions of trying something different aren't so devastating .....

I find the S7E far more functional for even the basic stuff. Then you include those bells and whistles, and you have a very satisfying girl, er, I mean smartphone.

;)

Everyone's different, of course.

I completely agree with you as i was one of those conservatives guys and was absolutely amazed by the improvements to the Samsung OS and the hardware speaks for itself as its the best piece of hardware in a smartphone IMO currently out there.

That being said, I felt too fragmented from my daily life and unfortunately 99% of my friends are on iOS which made group chat a compromise and other factors. It really stinks as the S7E is the best smartphone out this year I think but for me, the experience was a compromise for what fits my life for tech and needs.

Anybody notice their S7 getting warm while on speakerphone calls?

Normal phone calls through the ear piece don't warm up the phone at all nor does basically any other task besides gaming.

It's interesting, I'm thinking it might be a bug with the firmware I'm on as Canadian Carriers are by far the worst for releasing updates. The last update introduced a bug which prevents the phone from entering deep sleep as such Android System is awake for 90% of the total time. My battery life is really quite poor now, without this bug, I was getting nearly 8 hours of screen on time but now I'm losing a lot of battery life in standby that I struggle to get to 5.

Interesting analogy. Very original as well.

My S7E is fine on speaker. I use speaker to make calls often, but they aren't very long phone calls.

Has anybody in the uk had to use Samsung for warranty work on a phone? I'm thinking of buying the wife the s7 edge direct from Samsung uk. The Samsung experience shops are relabelled carphone warehouse shops and carphone warehouse warranty has never been the best.

ez package disabler is the best 99c ive spent on the phone, ever.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-s7-edge/how-to/tips-helped-improve-s7-edge-battery-t3366629

i really encourage everyone with an s7 or s7e whose looking to increase battery life without rooting to follow that guide. It worked wonders on my verizon s7e.

currently 5hr SOT with 40% left after first day as a daily driver. Really made a concerted effort to do all web browsing on the phone to see how far i could drain the phone in a normal 14-16hr schedule

Yup. Inexpensive and easy-to-do solution to the bloatware and whatever else you want to disable. Tick off what you know you don't need, and then enjoy the gains.

It was even easier to do on a T-Mobile device. Ugh at that Verizon bloat.

I'm going to give the S7 a shot I've installed Google drive, chrome, photos and maps. Going to use evernote so they only thing I think I'm missing is find my friends which I use to keep an eye on my daughter but I can still use it on my Mac and iPad and iMessage but I don't think that will be a huge deal. So i'm going to give this phone a shot when I get it Friday. What I think I'm starting to realize is that there maybe better applications available then what Apple provides me with.

Godspeed my friend! I really enjoyed my time with the S7E but it became more of a compromise of how I used the device versus actually enjoying everything it had to offer. That is a case scenario for my way of utilizing it though and may work best for others.

It really is the best smartphone of the year imo but not the best smartphone for my needs.

I know already that using a Android phone probably isn't going to be permanent. I've bought Android phones before and just didn't like them for what ever reason. I bought this S7 just because I like to see what if anything I'm missing it generally terns out that I'm not missing anything. I got a really good deal on it too (475$) so I generally play with Android for a while then just sell it.

The Galaxy S8 will have a 4K display, analysts predict

S8 to have a 4K display? And 5.5" screen? Sure, for the S8 Edge right? Not the S8 standard. I would hope that the standard stays in that 5" category. Maybe S8 Edge will be 4K, and S8 standard will stay its current resolution.

How will a 4K screen impact battery life? If the future Gear VR will be a standalone device with its own hi-res VR screen built-in already, does the S8 need 4K??

Where did you read that the future Gear VR will have its own display? I don't recall seeing that anywhere. And I think the only reason to put 4K into a smartphone display right now is specifically for VR, as 4K is unnecessary overkill in a smartphone not used for VR.
