So is it a smart thing to just get the 32GB storage and use the microSD expandable card for everything else?

Is there no benefit to having most of your storage onboard?

Your phone will run better with 128gb inbuilt storage. Getting a 32gb phone and 128/200gb sd card may result in some slow down. Whilst Google have properly supported sd card with Marshmallow, even they state that this approach is not ideal (hence their stance with their Nexus products) . Not sure whether that means potential occasional lag during real use but I guess its the price to pay for cheaper storage.

personally I would choose to not use the marshmallow feature to merge the storage partitions. I would continue to manually put media on the sd card while leaving app/app data on the flash storage. I like to pick and choose which apps store to the sd card (mostly media apps that download or cache)

For music, pictures, and documents. I rather keep the majority of those on external storage. I don't know if recording 4K video directly to the SD would would mess with the quality or not, but moving 4K vids that were recorded to internal storage should be fine. That's what I plan to do.

Sounds reasonable except for the phones that only come in paltry16gb sizes..... Sony.....

However I personally would find it difficult to do what you do with a 32gb device too.

My Z5 premium with 32gb inbuilt is waiting to merge with the 200gb sd card inside it. I hear march 7th is the release date. Until then my 64gb S6 edge plus is my main driver alongside my z3 compact tablet which too is waiting to merge its 128gn card with its almost useless 16gb inbuilt storage.

I was allright with 16gb + 64sd on my gs4 gpe, but alas our usage is all different! 32gb internal would be better breathing room

I know little about that. But is it true, that card basically becomes tethered to the device cause it's encrypted with choosing that option?

I have never done it (dont own a marshmallow device with sd card) and am not sure what happens when you remove the sd card, common sense would tell you that (non system) things would start failing

wonder what happens if your sd card gets corrupted after merging

I believe if you want to reuse the card in another device you will have to reformat it and erase it. Sd cards are cheap as chips though. There should be no need to remove it for another phone. Just buy another one for the other phone.

I watched this video a couple days ago. But I wonder if the S7 will work similar or maybe Samsung's TW will block that option and/or introduce there own. Either way, I just want for storage. But this is interesting. I will play around with the SD options before setting the device up.

Compared to the S4 TW, it's night and day. My S6 Edge has no lag at all. It does have much less bloat compared to the S4 TW, but still has bloatware, which is easily disabled without root using the "Package Disabler Pro" app.

I'd figure with the added gig of ram and newer TW on Marshmallow, the S7 should be nothing but smooth.

Many others are hoping just as much as you:

I didn't realize anything above 128gb was available for so cheap. I took a look and found that Sandisk makes a 200gb for $89.95 and with 90read and 15write(according to reviewers). Will be getting this one.

Thanks for putting that in my mind... :D
Hope everyone realizes that if you plan to record in 2k or 4k in an SD card, you better be buying UHS Class 3 SD cards. Anything less will only record in HD and below.

That looks more like a 3rd party keyboard lag. They should have kept it with the stock keyboard if they wanted to prove any lag. The stock keyboard has never lagged on my S6 edge.

I'm going to look into that. Thanks.

I'll be recording to internal storage first, then moving the video files to the SD card. But if I can find a UHS for around the same price and storage space, I'll get that instead.

Doubtful you'll find a UHS3 SD CARD for that cheap or in that size. Think 64gb or 128 is as high as it goes right now.
But read/write speeds are significantly faster. UHS1 and Class10 may say read/write speeds up to 80/20mbps, but realistically you'll see half that.

I bought a Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS 600x at 95mb write speeds 64gb for £30/€45 from Amazon about a fortnight ago .... They're not too pricy and definitely worth the premium (25-40%) over the normal MicroSD cards.

Is this one a viable option for 4K video recording? Thank you.
I would think so. It is a class 10 so it has fast RW speeds.
Here are the product specs.

  • Ideal for premium Android-based smartphones and tablets
  • Transfer up to 1200 photos a minute with premium transfer speed of up to 90MB/s
  • Holds up to 20 hours of Full HD video
  • Class 10 for Full HD video recording and playback
  • Water proof, temperature proof, shock proof, X-ray proof and magnet proof
  • Comes with SD adapter for use in MIL cameras

After doing some research, it seems like recording 4K directly to SD, the optimal write speed should be around 25-30. The one in the link is more around 15 according to reviewers that ran tests. I'm still going to get the one in the link, cause I will choose to recording to internal, then move that video file to SD to clear internal space.

This one is 90read 45write, but they only go up to 64GB space.

Totally bookmarking this page in case I get a microSD card for a future s7!

Educational. Thanks.

Is that easy to do? Do you need a separate app? Thanks!

Third party keyboards that don't lag on other phones doesn't show any area where Samsung could improve here? Interesting.
