Compression does make a difference, as do the type, quality, and settings of the display. I agree that this episode was dark and affected by streaming. When I watched it, though, the frenetic pace of the battle action was occasionally more of a problem than lighting — a lot was happening quickly, which sometimes made it hard to follow. I had similar issues viewing The Battle of the Bastards, although that was much brighter.

TBH, I often have more difficulty with sound, as in the scene with Arya and Melisandre. Unless I keep the volume on my sound system high, quiet dialog can be hard to hear, but I avoid that because there are many loud passages as well, and I try to be respectful of my apartment neighbors, who don't want to think that I have a dragon next door.
I’m thinking someone took the idea of the long night, and decided it would be artistic to make most of this episode look like the fog of war, which can have a place in telling a story, but in this case we have no clue how many of the good guys survived, and maybe this is intentional too, but what they chose to show resembled a rout and projected that Danery’s forces were broken.

Maybe that is the case, or maybe it was a decision to mislead the audience. We’ll have to see this week, where this battle has left them as far as being an effective fighting force.

I didn't watch the episode live. I read a lot of comments online about how dark the episode was and thought people were exaggerating as usual. When I finally watched the episode, I saw people were quite right (and my TV isn't dark, I always set brightness to remove most of the darkest blacks).

But the one thing I had in mind during all the episode was: Wow, they must have saved a LOT of money on special effects costs. :D

I agree with the episode being more fan based. Still good for what it is but I would preferred the original way better. Too many scenes of characters facing impending death only for most of them to survive. Since they've gone off script they would have probably found a way to let Ned live too but those aren't the decisions that made the show what it is today.

So let me get this straight. Jon sees Arya, for a second, running across the courtyard and decides to distract Viserion by sacrificing himself so she can make it? He doesn't know what she's doing, where she's going, what she's planning, who/what she's running toward or who/what she's running away from.

I mean, really seems like a stretch.

Plus, closed captioning would've indicated as such, instead all it said was "[YELLS]."

Good effort though. It could've given some meaning to his pointless yelling. He was just a few feet from Viserion, all he needed to do was touch it with Longclaw (which was in his hand) or throw a dragonglass dagger and the dragon would've shattered.

I thought this theory made the most sense too given the sequence of events - after this Arya runs past the walkers too.

Maybe the directors will give us some clarification.

I didn’t have much difficulty telling which of the major and intermediate characters were killed or survived, with the exception of Sam, who seemed to spend much of his time on the ground. I’m pretty sure he’s still around, though.

As for the armies, it looked like the Dothraki are gone. Many of the Unsullied also bit the dust. I’m less sure about the Knights of the Vale, but I bet they were decimated too. This will be a problem in the war to come. I can hear Cersei asking Dany “You and what army?”

Or maybe Ms. Lannister will suggest a one-on-one between the Cleganes for the whole seven kingdoms enchilada. :)

I rewatched the episode tonight on a smaller but better display (my 27" 5K iMac) and enjoyed it a lot more. Visually this episode is just stunning, I'm really amazed at how much went into it.

It's hard to believe we're already halfway through the season!

On the one hand want to quickly see what the outcome of the series, but on the other hand the so-flown and I do not want the series to end.:D

GOT and the football season will end around the same time. Then my life will be meaningless!

Might as well go volunteer to man the wall at castle black. Oh wait that’s gone!

I think you are in luck. The NK & crew only took down the wall at Eastwatch-by-the-sea.

On another note, I’m loving the NK death music. Written by same composer who did the Light Of The Seven, which was the ‘blowing up the religious fanatics’ music

You can help rebuild, they only took out a part of it. I'm sure they could use the hands with how many have been killed in this show.

Can you imagine the effort to build a 900’ wall out of Ice? In fact a 900’ wall seems like overkill. ;) Some monumental effort was put into that, so you’d think with such a threat, and the evidence of effort (the wall) that there would be more cultural knowledge and serious concern than treating the threat as just ancient stories.

The wall was built with magic, so there's not much reason for evidence of a monumental effort to build it.

Plus 8,000 years will result in a lot of lost history.

Also, the wall is 700' high, not 900 ;)

Speaking of the wall, my second watch of this episode last night got me thinking..

Viserion single-handedly brought it down last season, and then in this episode easily blew up part of Winterfell just flying overhead. Yet Jon manages to survive hiding behind maybe 8 inches of stone wall and then a big rock on the ground? o_O Must be that Targaryen blood.

Why would that surprise you? It’s a TV show, not a documentary! How is it any different than any other show or movie? Why are people so much more critical of GoT?

I wonder if I will have to turn the brightness on my tv right up this Sunday/Monday, or will the ‘streaming issues’ be fixed?

Just watched and whilst i loved the battle, the end was notably underwhelming. For once the actual heroes were the foot soldiers whilst the 'main' characters were all useless. Apart from Arya

. JS always goes on confusing solo runs and then stops abruptly. And what exactly was he planning to do with viserion? intimidate him?
. Theon's suicidal run had me rolling my eyes
. I'm not happy that Arya was the one who took out the NK and in such an anti-climatic fashion. Then again she was one of the few that seemed to know what she was doing

Magic? Surprised cause I don’t remember much traditional magic going on in this story.
