While I agree with others that you always seem to be the one complaining, I'll add some input as well. I had an iPod touch and a cell phone before I finally switched to the iPhone. Carrying two devices around does become somewhat of a burden. It may be cheaper to have a regular phone alongside an iPod touch, but for me it was more a choice of convenience for the all-in-one option.

+1.

I used the combination of a cheap cellphone and an iPod touch for half a year before I switched to an iPhone. Having to carry two devices turned out to be quite a burden for me, too. I usually go out without a bag (even when I go to work) so the fewer items to carry, the better. :)

I actually did the opposite of the thread title and went from a phone/touch combo to an iPhone. Saves pocket space and I have internet EVERYWHERE I go, for the most part.

I don't mind AT&T, I just wish they'd release MMS... or at least make 3.1 work.

+1 on the speaker phone. WTF's up with that. It's better on OS 3.0, but I expected a SPEAKER phone, not one that I normally have to put up to my ear to hear.
Really? My ears aren't like those of a bat, but I don't have much troube with the iPhone's speaker phone. It's not like you are 10 feet away from the phone when you use the feature, is it?

I am probably going to put my 3GS on eBay tomorrow, and use that money to get a Blackberry Bold. I've had all three iPhones, but it may be time for me to move on. I'm going to get a Blackberry Bold and Touch with the money I make off the 3GS on eBay. I should have enough for both of them, and maybe some left over. :) I'm a geek anyway, so having two devices on me isn't a problem.

If you use the web at all, I think you will be incredibly frustrated even with the Bold's browser. I've played around with other people's Bolds a bit, and the web browser just pales in comparison to the iPhone. Plus, after using multi-touch going back to a tiny trackball pointer is painfully slow.

Besides, the data plan for the Bold is just as expensive as the iPhone plan, and you'll get less use out of it.

Anyone have advice for me?

Sell your iPhone but under no circumstances buy any other Apple device. I suggest a Windows Mobile device. There are a lot of WM discussion forums you could then participate in.

I used an iPt with a dumbphone for nearly two years and I can say that the thought that most often occurred to me was "God, I wish I had an iPhone". The handiness of having a single device for both functions is completely worth the extra money to me. Not to mention GPS and cellular Internet.

I was going to get 3GS with AT&T for sure, but at the last minute, I changed my mind and bought iPod Touch instead. Now, I am using a cell phone with Verizon for $30/mo (special minimum plan) and iPod Touch for apps.

So, instead of paying AT&T close to $100 every month, I only pay $30 a month and still get the benefit of all the iPhone apps that I need.

I will upgrade to the 3rd Gen iPod Touch when it launches.

BRAVO! See? You're saving a ton of money. Especially since the iPhone costs about $1,200 per year. However, you're paying $360 per year and get almost the same functionality.

AT&T price was one of the reasons I never got an iPhone.

I pay dirt cheap on my Sprint plan...and now own a Palm Pre.

But if you are looking for ways to save montly dollars....its def. an option. I still use my MP3 player with me just because I have two pockets haha.

I left AT&T before the iPhone for crap service.

Now use a touchscreen LG Dare, get signal almost everywhere, have a swappable 16GB uSD card w. tons of music, ringtones & wallpapers, 2-3 days battery usage w. heavy activity, 3G mobile web & email, touch screen qwerty & even handwriting recognition. Monthly bill <2/3 of AT&T's with better service. BTW, the phone was $40 w. my new every two Verizon discount.

And a nice 32GB 2nd gen. Touch so I can fondle app.'s and mooch wi-fi when it's around.:p

I came from a Sprint Treo Pro + iPod Touch to the iPhone and have never had a single regret. If you don't use your phone enough then get rid of it, although I don't know why you bought the iPhone in the first place if you barely use it outside of the home. The reason you get an iPhone is 1) carry one less device and 2) be able to use all the apps that need data while your outside your home. You don't need to browse the web on your phone when you're at home if you have a laptop. I have never heard of someone going from a smart phone back to a regular phone. I don't even see how it's possible unless you truly are not a phone person, which confuses me even more why you owned the most expensive phone (with plan) out there.

Because some people have to be the cool kid on the block. It's a status symbol to/for them.

But I agree and have posted similarly in a thread asking how someone can work around the system to pay less for their voice/data

It's not about being cool. I really like the iPhone but I think it's too expensive. Yes, I love having my iPod and my phone rolled into 1 device, but I hardly use it as a phone. Instead, I use it for text messaging and Twitter (and I don't really need Twitter). I mostly use my iPhone for the iPod functions, so why do I have an iPhone? The ONLY reason I've held onto my iPhone for this long is solely for texting.

When I first got my iPhone, I was so happy to finally being able to connect anywhere I am, but that got old. Now there's nothing to look forward to when I get home. I could go back to just having an iPod and I would be happy to not have to pay this ridiculous bill each month.

If the iPhone had a more customizable plan, then I wouldn't have much of a problem with it. It's the forced data, and forced minutes that make me angry. I mean, 5,000 nights and weekends? That's when I use my phone the most... AT NIGHT (when I'm not at work) and on the weekends (when I'm also not at work). So why the heck do I pay for 450 regular minutes, 5,000 N&W and data?

I think I just need a go-phone to stash in my car in case I need to call someone or someone calls me and I'll have an iPod touch for all of my music and touch-screen needs. Plus, on the iPod, there's a lot more free ram (because it doesn't have all the phone functions) and the battery lasts a LOT longer.

Let's see...how does one post a question, argue with everyone, and not post for days...then, when they see that someone has supported their argument, they respond with "See, I was right!!!"

If you don't want to spend $$ on AT&T/iPhone, then DON'T! Go buy a $40 Shuffle, and Jitterbug phone, and be done with it...PLEASE!!!! Posts of people asking questions to confirm a decision they've already made is pointless, and a waste of everyone's time. Do what you want...if you're happy then that's all that matters. Don't worry about what everyone else thinks/says.

Ok I understand now then. I agree with you, leaving the iPhone and picking up a Touch and a cheaper phone might be the best idea for you. Ouch...that hurt a lot to say.

NEWSFLASH - this isn't about YOU or JUST YOU.

And you are you're own worst problem anyway. I was referring to other people and why they might choose to get an iphone even though they don't need it or can afford it.

BTW TheSpaz - has it dawned on you that AT&T can give 5,000 free minutes BECAUSE they are charging you for daytime/anytime minutes? Or how about that a MAJORITY of people - esp business users - use their phone DURING THE DAY?

the Nights/weekend minutes are a perk/bonus. Which is GREAT that they include it.

AT&T doesn't create plans for TheSpaz - they create plans for the majority/bulk of users and how they would use the phone.

Adapt, or move on.

OP: I agree I think that getting a cheap phone and a touch is your best bet based on what you've said about hardly ever using the phone aspect of it.

I personally couldn't do it, but I'm on my phone quite a lot. Sadly mine took a dive into a puddle on Saturday and I've been without it for a couple days now... off to apple tonight to do an out of warranty replacement.

By the way - this is still very telling of part of the problem

"Now there's nothing to look forward to when I get home."

Maybe I'm in the minority - but with any and all cellphones I've owned - it's never been about having something to look forward to, etc. It's been a device to make/rec calls, email, etc. It's always been about function and the needs I've had to have that functionality. Using a phone (and perhaps this is just your semantics) is not something I "look forward to" - but something I just do because I have this need or that need.

I have to carry a phone for work, and I also have a personal iphone. I don't like having two devices and would avoid it if I could. So my advice would be to stick with just the iphone... but I don't know whether you mind carrying extra stuff, how much the money means to you, how much you use data away from a hot spot, etc.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about me. My bad.

Can I just explain something really quick? I *can* afford the iPhone no problem, but, do I *want* to spend $100 a month on services I hardly use? The iPod touch used to be so perfect for me... no worries... no monthly bills... none of that stuff.

I was looking at some of my old threads from my iPod touch days and I explained in one of them why I didn't buy the iPhone and deep inside, I still feel the same way. I used to like the freedom of not being tied down to a device.

Below is a quote from this thread back in 2007:
TheSpaz said:
Here's a comparison for you:

iPhone:
- I already have a cell phone that was very cheap to buy and it's a 'pay as you go' phone because I'm not a heavy talker on the phone.
- The iPhone is only 8GB and I'm guessing that Mail and stuff take up some of that space so what you really have is even less space for iPod music.
- With the iPhone, you have to have a service contract with at&t and pay even more money to use it besides how much it costs (which it costs as much as a 16GB iPod Touch). After you choose a plan, then you're paying even more for it and EVERY MONTH.
- Of course with the iPhone, you're connected ANYWHERE.
- iPhone has a camera (Yes, who cares about camera phones... I don't)
- iPhone has a speaker (Whooop dee dooo)... the iPod is not a boom box.

iPod Touch:
- iPod!
- It's got Safari just like the iPhone as long as you're near wifi.
- 16GB is better than 8GB (is it not?)
- Thinner and shinier!
- Wifi is faster than the iPhone's satellite crap
- With less Apps on the iPod, there's more space available to do what it's ACTUALLY MADE TO DO, which is play music and movies/shows.
- You don't have to keep paying each month to own an iPod Touch... you pay once and it's yours (unless you took out a loan to get it)
- No contract! Nobody can tell you when you can stop using it.
- No ringtone headaches (if you don't know what I mean, check out some of the iTunes discussions and iPhone custom ringtones)
- The luscious interface is what I've been drooling over about the iPhone ever since it came out and the multi-touch is amazingly easy to use. I've been waiting a long time for an iPhone without the phone portion (as I said before, not a big fan of cell phones).
- The iPod touch is not a PDA... it's still a music player... only this time, it has some pretty bonus features.
- Flash based... not hard drive based. Both devices have this but, I'm especially excited about this because I hated giving up my Nano because it was rock solid but, I needed more storage and I also wanted video. I LOVED my old 4GB Nano and it was almost perfect except 4GB was a LITTLE too small for my wide variety of musical tastes and it couldn't play video. I think the iPod Touch is a happy medium for me.... Flash based, bigger screen, can play videos.
- Speaking of videos... it's gonna be awesome watching them on the bigger screen but, I also like watching the videos by plugging the iPod into my TV. I'll record a TV show with my EyeTV Hybrid and then use VisualHub to quickly convert it to a high quality iPod video and then sync it to my iPod and it's ready in minutes.

I think that's all I had to say. So when you're deciding on what to buy... you gotta weigh out what is more important to you... an iPod or a Phone. The iPhone can't do very much iPodding and the iPod can't do any phoning.

OP: I agree I think that getting a cheap phone and a touch is your best bet based on what you've said about hardly ever using the phone aspect of it.

I'm sorry to hear that man.
