You left out all the international dialing/data plans TheSpaz could add into his number which brings him way over $300 a month. For a single line. CRAZY!!!

Damn, I knew I was forgetting something!

$200 Data Global Add-On 200 MB
$6 World Traveler
$5 AT&T Canada
$5 AT&T Mexico

That brings the total to $454/mo just to have an iPhone! Outrageous!

I don't understand how the phone costs you $100/month.

Here's a thought:

Why don't you change your plan around so you get like 100-200 minutes, evenings starting later in the day, limited texts, limited data, etc?

Isn't that a less-complicated way of doing things?

What's with this all-or-nothing approach when you're not even using all the features you're paying for?

Wait....OHHH!...OP is TheSpaz! That explains everything! I forgot that you're crazy!

You must be new here ;) kidding. It doesn't matter what anyone says. Two things you can count on is that TheSpaz will do whatever he wants and will blog (I mean post) about it ad infinitum.

450 minutes is the minimum iPhone package

Also, I have unlimited texting because I love texting on the iPhone. It's pretty much all I do. However, when I get rid of my iPhone, I won't be texting much (if at all) with a dumb-phone.

Also, I won't be selling my iPhone... I like to leave my options open.

Interesting. You have unlimited texting on the iPhone and you claim you needed it because you use it so much. Yet you won't be doing much texting on the go phone. Naturally, because it's harder to type than on an iPhone. But if texting - based on your usage of the iphone is more important than calling - how do you see yourself being "happy" without the ability to text as much as you want?

I think you might be setting yourself up for another series of frustrations. And no doubt, we'll hear about each and every one.

It sounds like you don't even need a phone. You should either get Boost Mobile or the PEEK device. The PEEK has no phone - unlimited texting with a keyboard for $20 a month. Knock yourself out.

Thanks for the tip. The fact is. I don't *NEED* texting. It's just way too easy on the iPhone! It's so easy to accidentally text too much on the iPhone. It wouldn't hurt me to call someone every once in a while. Texting is the only reason why I have kept the iPhone for as long as I have. However, sending cute messages to my girlfriend isn't worth $1200 per year. Those are my feelings.

There's also other alternatives to texting... Email, AIM, etc. Thanks for that link though. I looked at it, but I probably won't be getting one.

All of which require a data plan, correct?

No.

well technically you can you an ipod touch with wifi for those...

Exactly.

Honestly guys. There's more to life than the internet and perhaps this will allow me to detach from it.

I'm near a computer practically everywhere I go.

PowerMac G5 at work
Wifi and Mac Pro at home
Wifi at girlfriend's parent's house
Wifi at girlfriend's college dorm
Wifi at my parent's house

I'm never very far from the internet if I need it.

If I'm ever TRULY in a bind and I desperately need an answer and I'm nowhere near wifi, I could call any one of my friends that have an iPhone and ask them nicely if they could look it up for me.

We can only hope so.

It sounds like you've made your decision (finally). Good luck and Godspeed.

Throwing in the towel. Giving up the iPhone.

Today I decided to give up the iPhone completely. I bought an AT&T go-phone today so that I can buy minutes as I use them. You see… I'm a very light talker on the phone… I don't have conversations more than a few minutes at a time and I never EVER come anywhere CLOSE to using my 450 minutes.

The other thing is… I don't need data everywhere I go. I seem to only use data for updating my twitter status and checking MacRumors (which isn't really all that important). Those things can wait until I get home.

I'm finding that I have almost nothing to do on my computer when I get home sometimes because I've already checked all of my news sites, MacRumors, twitter etc. from my iPhone. By the time I get home to use my Mac Pro, I'm bored already.

Also, I text a lot on my iPhone… and only for 1 reason. It's really easy to do. If it wasn't for the ease of texting on the iPhone, I probably wouldn't text as much as I do. Most of my texts are little things like telling my girlfriend I love her, good morning, I miss her… etc. I talked to her about it and we both agree that I could save all of that for a nice email to her instead of texting the same things over and over all the time. So I really don't *need* texting, but it is fun. I'll probably miss that the most.

I also get wifi almost everywhere I am. Home (paying for internet there anyway), work (un-protected hotspot nearby), my girlfriend's house, my girlfriend's college and various restaurants. Nothing is so important that I need data everywhere. Besides, what did I do before I had an iPhone? I just waited until I got home to look something up… not that big of a deal.

The iPhone is nice… really nice, but I'm finding it harder and harder all the time to justify the huge monthly bill and there's not much I can do about it if I want the luxury of having an iPhone.

The go-phone is going to cost me $100 per year and the iPod touch will cost me only $0 per year (except for major OS updates, which aren't that expensive anyway).

So that's it. I'm pretty seriously considering going back to the "old days" being iPhone-less and using an iPod touch + cheap go-phone. The more I think of it, the better it sounds to me.

Anyone wanna talk me out of it, or push me over the fence? What are your thoughts about my thoughts? I know a few of you that are thinking about the same path… do you think it would be worth it?

Sounds to me like you have already made your decision. After reading what you had to say it seems like your plan is perfect. If you are not going to use the features of the iPhone then way $100+ a month in order to have it. Enjoy your iPod Touch and your extremely cheap phone bill! The iPod Touches are really nice anyway. They are so dang thin!

I know that it sounds like I made up my mind, but I might be trying to talk myself into doing something I'll regret. I wanted real opinions. By the way, my friends all have iPhones and they don't want me to get rid of mine. They call me "Mr. Apple"... Hehe. When I told them I'm giving up my iPhone, they didn't take me seriously because they know how much I love it.

The other thing is: If I don't use my iPod touch for a week, I won't feel guilty. If I don't use my iPhone for a week, I'll be upset that I'm not getting my money's worth. Does that make sense?

I've always liked you and thought you were a pretty smart guy, but after reading this I'm having trouble figuring out why you bought an iPhone in the first place.

Why didn't you just do this in the first place?

(That's how good your argument is, btw.)

Well honestly I do not think I could give mine up. I have had an iPhone since they were originally released and it would be very hard for me to go back to a "normal" phone. I have had other smartphones in the past but they really do not compare to the user experience of the iPhone. I use the features of my phone on a daily basis. I enjoy being connected to everything at all times. When I am without my phone for an extended amount of time I feel very strange and cut off from everyone I know. The thing is, if you decide to drop the iPhone now and end up hating living without it you can always go back, however, if you do not talk on it that much anyway then you will probably not notice a huge difference with just having an iPod Touch.

I did do this in the first place. I used an iPod touch plus a go-phone for a year before I bought an iPhone. I got the iPhone because at the time, the iPhone had a lot more features than the iPod touch. The iPhone could do it all, whereas the iPod touch could only do a little. I loved the idea of having the internet everywhere I went, but after owning the iPhone for a year, I'm not using it nearly as much as I did when I first got it and I'm finding that I'm pretty much only using it as a music player and phone. The apps aren't as astonishing as they used to be and I just don't want to pay $100 each month anymore. When I first got the iPhone… it was the greatest thing in the world… now it's wearing off and I'd like to go back to the cheaper, more simple times.

Well, if you want a "real" opinion, I'll give you mine. For me, I couldn't do w/o having internet access when I'm not near free wifi. It's only $30/month to have the iPhone, and it's just not something I regard as being a substantial cost vs. the benefit of the flexibility I have with the iPhone. Once we get MMS access, it'll be even better. Also, I wouldn't want to have two devices I carry around with me. I used to have the Zune (I know, blasphemy) and my Sony Ericsson. With the iPhone the Zune hasn't been touched in forever. And if the 32 GB would have been out sooner, I'd really be set. I can't wait to see what next summer brings. So, I could never do what you are suggesting, but it really comes down to what works for you.

Here's what I said when I first got my iPod touch:

The following is from Sept. 8, 2007:

TheSpaz said:
Here's a comparison for you:

iPhone:
- I already have a cell phone that was very cheap to buy and it's a 'pay as you go' phone because I'm not a heavy talker on the phone.
- The iPhone is only 8GB and I'm guessing that Mail and stuff take up some of that space so what you really have is even less space for iPod music.
- With the iPhone, you have to have a service contract with at&t and pay even more money to use it besides how much it costs (which it costs as much as a 16GB iPod Touch). After you choose a plan, then you're paying even more for it and EVERY MONTH.
- Of course with the iPhone, you're connected ANYWHERE.
- iPhone has a camera (Yes, who cares about camera phones... I don't)
- iPhone has a speaker (Whooop dee dooo)... the iPod is not a boom box.

iPod Touch:
- iPod!
- It's got Safari just like the iPhone as long as you're near wifi.
- 16GB is better than 8GB (is it not?)
- Thinner and shinier!
- Wifi is faster than the iPhone's edge crap
- With less Apps on the iPod, there's more space available to do what it's ACTUALLY MADE TO DO, which is play music and movies/shows.
- You don't have to keep paying each month to own an iPod Touch... you pay once and it's yours (unless you took out a loan to get it)
- No contract! Nobody can tell you when you can stop using it.
- No ringtone headaches (if you don't know what I mean, check out some of the iTunes discussions and iPhone custom ringtones)
- The luscious interface is what I've been drooling over about the iPhone ever since it came out and the multi-touch is amazingly easy to use. I've been waiting a long time for an iPhone without the phone portion (as I said before, not a big fan of cell phones).
- The iPod touch is not a PDA... it's still a music player... only this time, it has some pretty bonus features.
- Flash based... not hard drive based. Both devices have this but, I'm especially excited about this because I hated giving up my Nano because it was rock solid but, I needed more storage and I also wanted video. I LOVED my old 4GB Nano and it was almost perfect except 4GB was a LITTLE too small for my wide variety of musical tastes and it couldn't play video. I think the iPod Touch is a happy medium for me.... Flash based, bigger screen, can play videos.
- Speaking of videos... it's gonna be awesome watching them on the bigger screen but, I also like watching the videos by plugging the iPod into my TV. I'll record a TV show with my EyeTV Hybrid and then use VisualHub to quickly convert it to a high quality iPod video and then sync it to my iPod and it's ready in minutes.

I think that's all I had to say. So when you're deciding on what to buy... you gotta weigh out what is more important to you... an iPod or a Phone. The iPhone can't do very much iPodding and the iPod can't do any phoning.

Go for it.

Get rid of it.

I liked mine just for the games, other than that I really hated it.

I got a Blackberry, but get whatever you're happy with. If a go-phone is what you want, go for it, but I would suggest a QWERTY phone.

Well, you're right. Some people *can't* be without the internet everywhere, but the truth is, I can. I used to do it all the time. Besides, the iPhone isn't just $30… it's $40+$30… I use about 15 minutes of airtime each month on phone calls. It's really not fair that AT&T requires a data plan on the iPhone and starting Sept. 6th, they'll be requiring data plans on ALL smartphones. This is just robbery for people who like to text, but don't need the internet. I think it's a joke.

I guess wait and see what happens...if they do put a camera in the Touch...well that's pretty much the end of the waffling!

I really want a camera in the iPod touch. That would be awesome!
