i could NEVER live without a iphone again.. im a ultra heavy talker but my cell is my only line. i go thru maybe 5k mins a month. and im hardly home with school. i tried to save money and do a gophone, yep that lasted a whole 2 days. if your under 100mins a month then gophone is the WAY to go for sure.

I agree with you, it kinda sucks to have to pay such a premium. My bill is $88 per month, and my parents give me $30/month so it costs me only $58/month. It's a lot to pay considering I was paying nothing when I was with my parents, but I had an iPod Touch (2nd generation), and I loved it until I started wanting to download apps on the fly, use apps that require data, use the fantastic safari app on the go, et cetera.

I got really tired of carrying around two devices (phone and iPod), so the iPhone is really the ultimate solution.

Your choice, I wouldn't mind getting a BB 8900 and an iPod Touch G3, I kinda want to test the BB out for a week or two.. Does anyone know how I can do this?

I think the point is

you are a smart person and you know your needs and wants better then anybody here. As well as your budget and if you feel it is worth it to you. So at the end of the day you will be the one to decide what's best for you. just FYI when I make big decisions I right every I like about something on one side one the other everything I don't then when it's done the side that has the most on it is the winner. I think it's called a Ben Franklin scale but not 100% but it's your life your choices. good luck with what ever you decide.

dude... you sound like you are trying to get people to talk convince you otherwise. grow some balls and do what you want... keep it or leave it.... WTF do we care?

I could not do without my iPhone either, but yes it is expensive to buy and operate. I am not much of a phone talker but really like the data side to the iPhone. And while most of the Apps are worthless, there are many that are very useful. My iPhone can do so much thanks to the Apps, I can control my Tivo, replace my computer mouse, stay connected to AIM, read the USA Today, Check out current home values, scan product bar codes, check if what I felt was actually an Earthquake, listen to Police/Fire scanner frequencies.

No, I couldn't do without my iPhone.

Just a random thought for iPhone users who want to save money, but want data on the go; sell your iPhone, go get the third iPod touch in about a week or so, and sign up for a Verizon MiFi (Or Sprint), and you basically save $30-40 a month, and can have data everywhere, use Skype for calling ($3/month), and a free texting app if you need it.

Something to ask yourself about those minutes you use.

Pay as you go phones I do not believe have free nights and weekend or M2M minutes.
Take for example my cell phone. While on the bill I might use 30-50 of my 450 any time minutes a month. My Roll over account is sitting at around 4k worth of minutes. While it may look like I really am over paying for those minutes if you look closer at my bill I have over 1000 minutes that will fall into M2M and N&W. Mind you my girlfriend is in another city right now so that adds to it but even when we were in the same city it would pull a higher number of minutes.

Add that in to the fact most of my friends and all of my family are on AT&T that puts almost everything in to my unlimited categories.

So ask yourself how many minutes fall into the unlimited zone that Go-Phone would not have.

Oh btw do not count out those nice little text message to your girlfriend. They go a long way and some times just make her smile. Got me out of trouble spots more than once.

Today I decided to give up the iPhone completely. I bought an AT&T go-phone today so that I can buy minutes as I use them. You see… I'm a very light talker on the phone… I don't have conversations more than a few minutes at a time and I never EVER come anywhere CLOSE to using my 450 minutes.

The other thing is… I don't need data everywhere I go. I seem to only use data for updating my twitter status and checking MacRumors (which isn't really all that important). Those things can wait until I get home.

I'm finding that I have almost nothing to do on my computer when I get home sometimes because I've already checked all of my news sites, MacRumors, twitter etc. from my iPhone. By the time I get home to use my Mac Pro, I'm bored already.

Also, I text a lot on my iPhone… and only for 1 reason. It's really easy to do. If it wasn't for the ease of texting on the iPhone, I probably wouldn't text as much as I do. Most of my texts are little things like telling my girlfriend I love her, good morning, I miss her… etc. I talked to her about it and we both agree that I could save all of that for a nice email to her instead of texting the same things over and over all the time. So I really don't *need* texting, but it is fun. I'll probably miss that the most.

I also get wifi almost everywhere I am. Home (paying for internet there anyway), work (un-protected hotspot nearby), my girlfriend's house, my girlfriend's college and various restaurants. Nothing is so important that I need data everywhere. Besides, what did I do before I had an iPhone? I just waited until I got home to look something up… not that big of a deal.

The iPhone is nice… really nice, but I'm finding it harder and harder all the time to justify the huge monthly bill and there's not much I can do about it if I want the luxury of having an iPhone.

The go-phone is going to cost me $100 per year and the iPod touch will cost me only $0 per year (except for major OS updates, which aren't that expensive anyway).

So that's it. I'm pretty seriously considering going back to the "old days" being iPhone-less and using an iPod touch + cheap go-phone. The more I think of it, the better it sounds to me.

Anyone wanna talk me out of it, or push me over the fence? What are your thoughts about my thoughts? I know a few of you that are thinking about the same path… do you think it would be worth it?

Wont you surf just as much with your itouch? so you will still be bored when you get home. why the hell do you have an itouch and an iphone? why did you get the iphone in the first place? sell your iphone and save some money man

Can you not just put the Pay as you Go sim in your existing iPhone, use the minutes as you need them, and then not need to carry the PAYG phone and the iPod touch that you would need to buy? Or did I miss you saying that you already have the iPod Touch?

Just curious if that would work for you since I have no idea.

Chef Jay

You could have jail-broken your iPhone and used a pay-as-you-go SIM card in it. Best of both worlds.

That's what I did with my 2G iPhone. I was such a light user that I only need to top up my PAYG account with $25 every 3 months.

Not sure if it works with 3G iPhone though.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 3GS (White, 32GB): Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

It's a real shame you couldn't find a 3GS to your liking, Spaz, because it really is a much more enjoyable device to use. :(

Sounds to me like you have already made your decision. After reading what you had to say it seems like your plan is perfect. If you are not going to use the features of the iPhone then way $100+ a month in order to have it. Enjoy your iPod Touch and your extremely cheap phone bill! The iPod Touches are really nice anyway. They are so dang thin!

Yeah. After using an iPod Touch for a long time solely for a period of time (For around 8 months) to post to Twitter almost every day, I can't believe how thick an iPhone is. (And slowly realize that how iPod Touches are thin. And mine's just first gen.)

Unlock your iPhone, and put your GoPhone sim card in it. Best of both worlds.

I've been on a GoPhone Pick Your Plan since the release of the first iPhone, and have no regrets. They no longer offer the $19.99 Unlimited iPhone data option, but they haven't shut me off, either. I got a 3G off Craigslist, stuck my sim card in it, and I have full unlimited 3G for $19.99 a month. I also use the 1000 text option for $9.99, and the lowest number of phone minutes available at $29.99. My bill comes to around $65.

That's what really annoys me about O2's tarriffs as well; you pay a lot of money yet their tarriffs are all tailored for people who need more voice minutes. There's no option for more text messages and fewer voice minutes.

I have a tarriff that gives me just texts.

The other thing that is steering me away from my iPhone is the slowness of the iPhone 3G hardware. I'm hoping to get a third gen iPod touch that has similar hardware specs as the iPhone 3GS.

That's also why I don't want to use a go-phone sim in my iPhone. I want faster hardware. Plus, my first gen iPhone is only 8GB and my 3G is only 16GB. I'm hoping to get an iPod touch that's at least 32GB. I tried going the 3GS route, but it has the same crappy build quality as the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch seems stronger and better built due to it's metal casing and minimum features.

When I look at an iPod touch, the metal wraps all the way around to the glass; eliminating the possibity of having a mis-aligned bezel, the casing won't crack, there's no mute switch to fall off and they're just sturdier.

Getting rid of your iPhone now might be hasty. One thing I have learned in this life is that nothing stays the same. You have Wifi at work now but what about in the future. It may not always be that way.

Try using some of the other features on your iPhone. I was never big on using a calendar but now I can't do without it. Set weekly or monthly reminders and let it work for you.

What about GPS? The iPhone makes a great turn-by-turn GPS. I think the cheapest one is $35.

Do you read? The Kindle app is great for that.

Do you go shopping a lot. Download the Amazon app and you can comparison shop on the spot. When I'm in Best Buy, I use the Amazon app to help me know if I am getting a good deal on any given item.

The data services can be a great advantage in many ways. You just need to explore your options. Try utilizing the phone in your daily life, more so than just using it as a phone and to check Twitter.

The build quality is fine. I have a 3GS and it's perfect.

Remember that you only read about the few phones that go wrong on the forum, people don't make threads saying their phones work fine, so you have to take time to consider the ratio.

You'll regret it and go back to the iPhone as I did.
He already has.

Does that mean you won't post on these boards anymore?;)
my sources say no.

For the love of God! Don't call it an itouch or spaztastic will be starting another thread about that!

Spaz, do as you wish but just remember in the end it's just an object and you should not feel the need to stress out about it so damn much. You seem to have a tendency to get all hyper about these decisions that are so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Surely there are larger problems to worry about but if not, I want your life. If all I battled with was the iPod touch or iPhone delimma, I'd be one happy girl!

Amen, listen to her Spaz. A phone is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Even the 3GS will be out-dated in 2 years. Do what makes the ole' Spaz happy, just don't stop coming to MR, I need the entertainment in my work day.
