How exactly is that done? I just JB mine, and was considering joining TMobile!

Just jailbreak it with redsn0w, and then through cydia download ultrasn0w, and the phone will be unlocked an accept any sim card. Just pop in your T-Mobile card. I think you can get a data plan for $10 a month. It is edge only, but I don't mind, it is useable. All you have to do is set the APN in the settings to wap.voicestream.com and data will work instantly.

Notice it says "sidekick plans". I have a regular voice plan. I don't blame them. That plan is only for sidekick users, and it is using danger's servers. Good for T-Mobile for doing that. My works without a hitch. As soon as I got rid of my sidekick I switch my data plan, because back then no one knew how to use the sidekick plan with an iPhone.

Yeah, I noticed that now. I had no idea what "sidekick" was. There were just people all upset about it, so I thought it applied to you.

If it did, I would be climbing and pullling off all the leaves and branches of the whine tree with everyone else. I'm smart, and didn't stay on that plan. This is a sidekick.

As someone who is not really a fan of duplicating devices, and already an owner of an iPhone, I've actually thought of adding an iTouch to my gear list (basically for the car).

I have been thinking of getting an iphone for a while. But I am having a hard time justifying the monthly fee. Plus the iphone's speaker phone is crap. Thus I have a moto Q and touch.

+1 on the speaker phone. WTF's up with that. It's better on OS 3.0, but I expected a SPEAKER phone, not one that I normally have to put up to my ear to hear.

I read through this entire thread and was surprised nobody suggested this already.

Why don't you put your SIM in another phone, call AT&T and cancel the data plan, put a WIX block on and then put the SIM back in the iPhone? That way you don't have to carry an iPod and you still have the ease of use provided by the iPhone.

I've been using my 3GS for a few weeks without data. I can still send text messages and use my WiFi when I get home to check my email. My online access shows I'm using an iPhone but as of now I've had no issues with AT&T adding anything to my account.

What's the worst they could do if they found out? Just put it back on?

So you paid the fee to get out of the at+t data plan contract?

Yeah put the moto Q's speaker phone on iphone, I'd probably have it by now. I demoed the 3GS, its speaker still is too low.

As far as I know. The way I see it, I'm using the same features as the guy sitting next to me on his Nokia candybar phone because my data is blocked. Therefore AT&T shouldn't have a problem with me not having a data plan.

So you paid the fee to get out of the at+t data plan contract?

Nope.

Well, I can't find the thread now, but I thought there was news that T-Mobile wasn't going to support the iPhone any more.

Edit: Okay, here it is:

You might want to read that.

It clearly says T-Mobile will not allow iPhone users to use the SIDEKICK PREPAID PLAN.

You can still use the iPhone on T-Mobile with the standard plans if you add " Total Internet Access " to the line.

Actually what I've been considering doing is dumping AT&T and going back to Sprint with a dumb phone and using my old iPhone as a Touch. I'd do the same thing for my wife. Our AT&T service is so bad that we're just at wits end as to what to do. I've talked to AT&T numerous times with no luck at a all. I know it will cost me a bundle but somethings got to give here. We just can't keep going with this poor service. We've missed several very, very important phone calls because of the poor service. I guess I'm waiting around to see about the new Tablet. I could see me going with a Sprint dumb phone and the Tablet, selling my iPhone and let me wife use her iPhone as a Touch. We'll see. I just keep hoping some miracle will happen one day and our AT&T service will improve miraculously.

You're always crying about one thing or another....yawn!

Why don't you stop worrying so much about everyone else opinion and just come up with some of your own and make your decision that way.

I thought about switching and just getting a touch. But then I was like "what if...", you know? What if I get lost and I need directions (actually got lost and back on track once because of GPS on my iPhone). What if I need to look up a phone number when I get stuck somewhere? All these things come in to mind. The internet in my pocket even though I barely use Safari and the App store will keep me being an iPhone owner for a very long time.

If you do cancel your iPhone plan, I'd highly recommend NOT getting a pay-as-you-go phone, unless you can give up SMS. I'm just like you in that I barely ever call anyone but use SMS a lot. I used to have a PAYG phone, and those texts really add up. It's just not practical financially to get anything other than a phone with an unlimited SMS plan if you are a heavy SMS user.

Although, I do use the Internet on my 3G service quite often, so I wouldn't cancel my iPhone plan.

I'm getting tired of paying for AT&T's service. When the 3rd gen iPod touch comes out, I might be getting that (faster processor, more RAM etc) and canceling my iPhone plan. I'll just pick up a stupid AT&T go-phone for short calls. I'd be paying a lot less and I really don't use the internet much while I'm away from home. I'd be more than fine with waiting until I get home to look at my favorite websites. I mean, by the time I get home at night... I've already looked at all the sites, so there's almost nothing to do on my computer when I get there.

Here's my usage:
Phone calls: 10 minutes out of 450 minutes and I have so much rollover minutes that it's not even funny
Internet: Check MacRumors, look at Apple news sites
Text messaging: I do a TON of text messaging because I have unlimited, but the iPod touch will have to get by on Email, Twitter and AIM.

So I'm asking this. Has anyone done something similar? Tired of the high iPhone prices? How have you been coping being iPhone-less? I'll still definitely need an iPod touch because I still think the touch screen iPod is nice, I just don't wanna pay for service anymore.

Anyone have advice for me?

Just how bad is T-Mobile in your area? If you rarely make phone calls hopefully you can connect calls when you need to, right? You'll spend less money than having the AT&T plan, right? Plus you'd still have Wi-Fi for the other times. I can't remember if you have an Ipod Touch already... if you can go to T-Mobile, you'd be saving money by not having to by an Ipod Touch.
