I was happy with my first iPod touch and I was happy with my first gen iPhone...

So if you return your iPhone, does that mean we'll see you down in the iPod touch forums? Because if so, I think you should keep the phone. ;)

I replied after six pages - which is longer than 95% of all all the threads in the forum...

You're not a doctor, and if you were you would know that you can't diagnose someone without meeting them.

Yes, I agree Spaz is insanely annoying, but he's also become the whipping boy of the forum. It would be best if people just stopped giving him attention and maybe he would quietly leave.

Today, I realized that I want to return my iPhone 3GS once again for the yellow gradient on the screen as well as the bezel not being flush with the plastic. This got me thinking. I've never had a quality problem with my iPod touch. Then I got to thinking... I pay about $100 each month for this.... and for what? I get to go on the internet EVERYWHERE (woo, like I really need to be checking MacRumors that often).

So then I got to thinking... maybe I could enjoy my life a little more if I wasn't paying $100 a month for a phone and instead I could be out doing stuff more productive than worry about having to use my iPhone to justify the price per month.

I feel as if I always need to be using it to get my money's worth out of it. If it's just sitting in my pocket, I feel like I'm just throwing money away each month.

I love the iPhone features... I really do, but I'm starting to wonder if it's all worth it. After looking at the big picture... this phone seems to be slowly ruining my life. I've never worried so much over an electronic product before (especially not Apple) and I'm sure it's not good.

I miss the good ol' days of just carrying an iPod around to listen to music and watch an occasional video. It seems like back then, I used to do a lot more with my time (shoot photography, record skate videos, produce music, juggle, magic tricks, and other various fun activities). For some reason, I feel that if I take focus off the iPhone and do something else, then what the heck do I have the iPhone for?

One thing that would make me feel better about all of this is if we could actually pick our plans on the iPhone. If AT&T let us choose whether we want data and choose if we want 450 minutes. I don't even use 50 minutes in a month. Why isn't the iPhone plan customizable to *my needs* like every other phone?

... I think I've almost had it with the iPhone scene... but I don't know yet. I'd probably miss it as soon as I canceled my contract.

Hey man... I love the iPhone... I just wish I could go to the Apple Store and buy one and not have to return it due to various quality issues... that's all. I was happy with my first iPod touch and I was happy with my first gen iPhone... then I got the 3G and had to return it 3 times before I got a good one.... now I'm on my 4th return of the iPhone 3GS.

The problem I see with this thread (and OP) is that he's not sure exactly WHAT he's complaining about. Look at the enormous tangent that supplements his original gripe that he rehashes in his latest post.

Sure he mentions having to exchange in the first post, but then he goes on to moan about the cooooost and how much more he could get doooone without it and how he can't customize his plaaaaan. I mean really, as far as I can tell he's going for reactions around here and he's getting exactly what he wants.

I realize that it would be unfair for the mods to close all threads he creates but I think some screening is in order. In the obvious case of him having a bipolar episode, I think the thread should be wastelanded before any significant amount of anybody's time can be wasted reading it.

I suppose I overreacted in that first post. Sorry. I do like the iPhone, it just takes up too much of my time. That's what I've been trying to get at.

:p

The circle is complete!

Well I'm not here to cut you down and give you all kinds of grief for having some complaints. I've been in your exact position regarding the quality of the 3G/3GS. I went through seven(?) exchanges on my 3G and was still not completely satisfied when I put a stop to it and accepted it for what it was. Fortunately my first 3GS shipped to me on June 19th came out of the box perfect except for a tiny light leak in it's usual upper left hand area.

The rest of what you're going through is completely alien to me. If I were having those feelings toward a phone I would definitely be doing something about it. I had somebody point out that I use my 3G an aweful lot in the weeks after buying it (November-ish). I took a step back and considered my usage and realized they were right.

I don't keep games on my phone. I don't read books on it. I update Twitter once or twice a day and keep my Beejive on an away message stating my phone is pushing me messages if somebody has anything important to say, which is rare. Other than that it's a phone for me. Maybe that's what you need to do. Take anything that makes it more than a communications device out of the picture. You may notice your usage gets quite a trimming.

Hope this helps.

Then quit allowing it to take even more of your time, and return it already.

OMG, I just read through all 163 posts in this thread and I'm still wiping the tears of laughter from my eyes. Funniest thing I've read in a long time and totally worth staying up late for.

Spaz, I have to admit: in spite of being annoyed at your posts and taking the occasional jab at your semantics, I've actually grown attached to reading your posts. You've brought an incredible amount of entertainment to this forum. Call me a fan.

Now seriously, we all know (yourself included) that you will not stop obsessing over this until you get a 3GS with a perfect build. I totally understand why you feel this way and you are not alone. Just stop worrying and head back to the Genius Bar until you find one. Lucky for you, Apple has the greatest customer service in the world and will accommodate your returns.

Next thing, get out and get some exercise. Take up running, swimming, or biking. Not only will it do wonders for your physical health, it will clean up your mental health too. Pick a race and make it your goal...

And if you need someone to talk to, shoot me a PM -- I'll be glad to chat with you anytime.

Bryan

Not true. Even if the iPhone delivered on absolutely everything it promised perfectly Spaz would still gripe about how he likes the form of the 2G or the phone has simply lost its luster. Don't worry, he'll never run out of reasons to start threads specifically designed for people to flame him.

Top 10 reasons why I miss *my* iPhone Hahaha
Oh oh. Here we go! :)

When will we see that thread? ;)
Be careful what you ask for.

He's confused just like the rest of us. :p

Snort!

This is a most entertaining thread.

Spaz, start a blog. It will be an instant hit, and I can guarantee that everyone here will have it bookmarked. Heck, they'll be compulsively visiting every hour.

If you decide to stick around you could go with ATT go phone Pick Your Plan.

30 for 200 minutes, plus 10 for 1000 texts, plus 20 for 100mb.

if that low amount of data usage would suffice atleast(maybe it would enourage you to not use it too

It still can be simple today. During the 4th of July celebrations this past weekend, I left my iPhone home. I didn't miss it and I'm happy I was able to unplug myself from the grid. Likewise with the computer, I didn't even turn it on during the holiday weekend.

Sometimes technology can ensnare us, and that includes me, so it was nice that I could get away from all of that and spend time outside.

Good post...with all the new technology avail. its easy to get swooned into a vicious obsession... :D

Wow, I don't know what to say, while I admit, detail orientated in everything, I haven't got to your level yet to the point where I have to return a product to "have a life". I will just remind myself not to reach to your level...in a way, an inspiration. thanks!

I hope you feel better and have more free time after returning your phone. :apple:

The iPhone is a luxury... it's not a necessity. It's not like a car, where you *have* to use it to get to work every day.

Just got to point out that this isn't actually true:

1. Walk
2. Public Transport
3. bicycle
4. etc. etc.

I think I realized what I need. I need an iPhone 3GS that has the same quality (or better) than my iPhone 3G and I'll be happy... I love the quality of my 3G (that I finally got after 4 replacements) and I wish my 3GS was the same or better than that. I think in order to end my "blues", I'll have to go back to the Apple Store, replace my 3GS with an iPhone that has the quality that I want.

I think you maybe have to recognise that you are perhaps being too picky about the quality of your devices. As others have pointed out, it's a phone - it will get scratched, nicked, dinged, worn and ultimately discarded when you upgrade in a couple of years. Who cares if it has a tiny bit of light leaking out that you can see from one very specific angle, or if the bezel is very slightly uneven? Use, enjoy, don't worry about it.

It seems many posters here have the same feelings about Thespaz as he does about his phone. They really want to get rid of him but they just can't. Or maybe they could... but they might miss him.

I actually am beginning to think he doesn't believe a word of his own nonsense and it just an alter ego for this forum. Like some sort of sad parody of the typical overly obsessive Apple use but way over done.

It does seem to work all of the time as his threads are always quite lengthy. Funny how such a shallow, simple character gets otherwise intelligent people to respond. Of course I am in the same boat as I am replying but can assure you I won't be manipulated into ever saying anything on one of his threads again.

If this is really just humor to bait this many people (successfully) into wasting their time, then well played. If it isn't pro-euthanasia legislation should be passed. Unfortunately if it isn't voluntary that is still considered murder.

These are actually some of the same thoughts (especially what I bolded) that I had when I first read this thread. However, I figured you guys know him much better, so I wondered if maybe he did have a mental problem and perhaps some of the posters should be a little more empathetic. Anyway, I don't think he's going to get rid of his iPhone and I don't think he's going to stop posting.

Guys... I didn't make this thread to see how long it could get. Geeze. Quite simply, I was thinking too much yesterday and that's what started all of this. I've actually reverted back to using my iPhone 3G on 2.2.1 because that's the last time I was happy with my iPhone. It's working pretty well... nice and speedy too.

OMG that took time to read and killed my lunch break, but doesn't matter...it's raining cats and dogs.

Easy solution for that "problem" : Get a girlfriend.

She will slap you in the face, if you were enjoying it more touching the phone than touching her.

And maybe after some time you will become obsessed with her.
You have to decide if that is the better alternative.
At least you can't turn her off and stick her in the drawer....Ok, maybe you can.

wow what a turn of events, the OP complains about how expensive the iPhone is (along with the ATT service) and how it encompasses his whole life and how he obsessed with the phone to the detriment of other activities. To now he's saying he didn't mean that but rather he was unhappy with the build quality and he'll exchange the phone.

I don't get it, it took 7+ pages to flip flop from obsession and hating it, to loving it and wanting a new one. Wow

I suppose we'll see more threads from the OP lamenting/loving his iPhone in the near future. ;)

I hope the new morning finds you thinking more clearly today, TheSpaz. We must save your sanity and allow you to keep your phone.

Having wrestled with most of the OP's quandary points, and taken the step of selling my 3G, THEN panicking and having to shuffle accounts around in order to get another one...I know how addictive, yet anxiety-inducing the iPhone can be. I've given up, though. I'm a fan, and until I can't afford the plan or am too old to enjoy any of the things the phone brings to the table, I'll have an iPhone. Well...I don't know that I'm addicted to the point that I'd look away from a different device that happened to truly be BETTER....but that's a ways away yet.
