Well... I feel your pain. I would rather buy a surface studio with less money than those laptops. At least, I could edit in Allan Bell style.

Crazy... Apple is totally forgetting who created the buzz behind its failed brand... MS is just following SJ 90's steps and building buzz for its brand. Making it cool. Then the phones, and the money, will follow.

Poor apple, 90's all over again. Completely unfocused product line, nonsense products that don't work (watch is the new Watson) and blurry message to their main clients, the ones that inspire to buy.

I am beginning to think that they see the desktop market as shrinking to the point that they are going to move to portables as soon as they can. The iMac may very well be their last desktop as long as they feel they need it.

They were the ones that actually forced/helped the desktop market to shrink (alongside everyone else in the clueless industry) in the first place. It was obvious that 99% of Microsoft/PC users (which used to account >90% of the total market) never really wanted a desktop and could happily live with a laptop, a tablet, or just a smartphone - Bill Gates convinced them that having Microsoft Office is a must. The majority of the remaining industry falsely believed that computers are/should be either for Facebook (could be replaced with a tablet/phone) or for games and stupid benchmarks and PC modding.

The sad thing is that Apple could still have a significant revenue with both MacPro and MacMini and keep the ecosystem solid. There are too many cases where desktops/workstations still make sense and there is no reason (besides Apple stupidness at market analysis and greediness at pricing policy) why people shouldn't operate in both of the worlds - laptops and desktops.

Personally, I buy lots of tech gear, some for hobby others for work. And I occasionally enjoy using smartphones, tablets, and laptops as much as desktops, workstations, and servers. But if I had to spend 10k euros for hardware I would rather spend the 9k on a fully specced workstation than a laptop.

Well...I think the brand is just fine! It's gona take more than a lack of mac pro update to tarnish the brand. How people use technology has evolved in the last 20 years. I just wish they focused more on the Mac these days. Today's event wasn't very encouraging - despite the fact that I find the new MBP interesting, but I have no need for a laptop.

And as a bigger insult Apple has increased the price of the base 2013 Mac Pro by £500.

I don't see anyone outside of the UK mentioning price increases. So this is currency correction due to the falling GBP, not a price increase.

This month the Pound hit its lowest level ever recorded. If it doesn't bounce back soon, prepare for more "price increases" for foreign goods.

You are correct that this is probably because of the currency exchange with a weak pound currently.
But £3000 for a 3 YEAR OLD machine?! Really?! I can still buy it at John Lewis for £2499 right now. eBay has them at £2300.

At £3000 you are paying about £700 more than the equivalent machine in the USA I am calculating. A $200 billion company can't do better helping the currency exchange for UK consumers on a 3 year old machine? I find it insulting, greedy and out of touch. These machines are bought by professionals, many of who actually make the content all their silly gadgetry runs on.

Moreover if the pound does go up in the next 6 months (which I suspect it will since import will indeed be weak for a while and export high, thus eventually influencing the currency...) you'd still have to wait for an entire product refresh before Apple adjusts any prices because that is how they roll.

I have no issues apple increasing prices on new products. To increase prices on a 2013 computer is insulting. Charging full price in 2016 is bad enough. It's turned into a pathetic company that stopped innovating and chasing profit.

I'm already fed up with an iPhone that has inferior reception cause of the cheaper Intel modem and am going back to the 6S

I think there is a misunderstanding. I'm merely pointing out that a currency adjustment isn't a price increase, it's keeping costs equal across the world.

I completely agree with you that the price and age are outrageous. But that and currency value are separate issues.

Is it really that hard to release new PRO desktops every few years when you have 200 billion in the bank?

I think this drives at the center of my frustration. Its not like they are a company that struggles to come up with a decent R&D budget for powerful workstations and 4k/5k displays. Even if the workstation market isn't that profitable, its about the ecosystem. They are alienating millions of workstation users who will write off Apple products all together. For a company that prides itself on customer satisfaction, I feel they have failed miserably here.

I made it all the way thru with Apple from 1982 (Apple II) until now. I seriously can't believe I'm entertaining the idea of replacing my Mac Pro 6,1 with a HP workstation, but it seems it is happening. It's absolutely surreal as I had always hoped I've never need to leave Apple under Steve's or Tim Cook's leadership. I was wrong about Cook. I feel utterly betrayed by this company. That may sound ridiculous to some, but I've paid my dues and helped build that cash cow they have. I've always chosen Macs when I had any power over the situation, but that's sadly changing.

Yes, it appears that Cook abandoned those that were devoted to Apple, Mac quality and stayed through the years. Folks like yourself are replaced by the iPhone generation which is a larger market.

IT APPEARS THAT MY COMMENT WAS EDITED BY THE POWERS THAT BE. CANDIDLY, I WOULD MUCH RATHER THEY ELECT TO DELETE MY POST RATHER THAN EDIT IT.

Crap, is this true about the crappy modem? Any links?
