I know exactly what fragmentation is and don't need to 'gain a full understanding' as I already know what it is. There are lots of different devices with different screen sizes/resolutions, different features, sensors, etc., some have MicroSD slots, others don't, they run varying versions of Android, etc. This means there are apps that work for some phones and not others. This is fragmentation.

It's obvious that you do not have an understanding of it. It's obvious you are not interested in informing yourself, so I think we're done here. Have a nice day.

----------

im gona stick with my whatsapp, my contacts aren't even on google (i use outlook previously hotmail yeah sue me) and my other contacts are on facebook so

no thanks... i don't need to manage yet another list re-add friends, and have to manage a buddy list is a pain in the ass, yesterday i thought how bbm was going to fail nowadays with the horrible PIN-addy system, whatsapp or imessage just do things automatically with the phone number

You clearly don't understand how Hangouts works. You don't need to "re-add" anyone, and you don't need to manage a buddy list at all. You should at least become knowledgeable about an app before you decided to knock it.

Basically, all you have to do is tap the faces of the people you want to add to the chat. Once you have selected a person/people, it will give you a choice at the bottom of the screen to either message them, or video call them. It's really very easy and feels quite intuitive starting a group chat or video call.

How did you get Hangouts to work?

Dissappointed on no Android 4.3 por whatever.

HTC One (and maybe SGS4) serious serious trouble with the new SGS4 Google Edition. Dont know if buy that or wait for Nexus 5 (although without SD)...

Not in the slightest. The average consumer will have no idea about it.

Fragmentation: Lack of people on the more current versions leading to the lower APIs being used (or people being unable to get an app for their older device). This is even true for newer skinned devices, as they update slower

Newer devices being brought into the Nexus line: The Nexus line, or equivalent of that, gets updates fast. This means more people will be able to use the newer API faster.

HOW is fragmentation worse because of Nexus-esque devices? The idea os to get MORE people on the most recent version.

Never said it was.

You said the HTC one gets 64gb for the same price but you fail to get that the people are paying 650 for pure android and not the memory the phone comes with.

It also has the option for an SD card.

I'm sorry if I quoted the wrong person also lol

Because I seemingly have misunderstood Hangouts, but it only integrates Google services into one application right? For example, text messages will still be sent and received outside of this.

To clarify, this is interesting and definitely useful ,especially in order to interact w/ my Google contacts. But it is not the end all be all, and is still limited to the Google platform.

here is a pretty good overall view on hangouts from The Verge:

The more I read about Hangouts, the better it sounds.

It also has one huge advantage over iMessage: it's cross platform.

Ditto.

Probably still rolling out.

I'm having trouble on my HTC One.....I still have Talk and when I search Hangouts in the play store, it says I already have it installed.....no option to "update".....

For my GNexus, here's how I did it. I went to the site, clicked install, clicked on my device and made it install that way. Before that, it wasn't letting me update. I hope that helps.

Thats because you can buy an S4 for $199, root it and get "pure" Google in about 20 minutes. Whos dumb enough to pay $650?

People who are smart enough to understand math. You may buy a phone for $199 at an INFLATED monthly price. If carrier's didn't subsidize phones, your monthly cost would be lower, ala T-Mobile. Paying $650 and taking the phone to T-Mobile is certainly cheaper than any major carrier. Hopefully, every carrier offers this option, so we know exactly what we are paying.

Step 1 Buy Phone
Step 2 Get Straight Talk (or another MVNO)
Step 3 Get 45$ a month for "unlimited" and save 40 or so $ a month (or more than the cost of the phone over two years)
Step 4 Have more money

This is only true under certain circumstances and only after knowing what prices carriers will settle at. As much as people cry for lower prices, we can expect companies like Verizon and AT&T not to drop down to T-Mo's pricing structure.

T-Mo in many places is a 'you get what you pay for' situation. I understand math, but I'll gladly keep handing my money over to Verizon for their superior coverage in my area. And at that, I'll keep signing a contract to lower that down payment until Verizon changes their price model.

edit: this all w/ respect to carriers, not the unlocked Google phone.

There is no pure android rom bootloader and kernel for the gs4.every asop ROM out there is a butchered attempt taken from the nexus source to port over and try to patch it to work on another device.

Now if you can unlock the reg gs4 boot and happen to find a way to get the new kernel on Samsung's stock boot loader you can port the new nexus gs4 ROM on the older phone but it still will not get updates from Google and your warranty will be voided

That SGS4 Google Edition will have a very very long life thanks to the community.

I bet it will get up to Android 6.1. SGS1 has 4.2 custom roms.

Had stock android been on my S4 i would have chosen it over the HTC one. However dropping €650 on the device, i'm not sure I could justify that.

on another topic....

I really like the new layout on google music application...

I hope we get the subscription service, would love to avail of it at the cheaper $7.99 / €7.99 rate.

I pay around 93 a month for att and my contract is done in december. Will probably stay because, unless I read it wrong, no LTE support for tmobile. That and I'm worried about the cell spectrum and anything indoors

Just want pure android and this is by far my best option regardless of 16gb storage(for apps)

Nope, because any difference in currency will disappear once 23% VAT is added :(

So at best I'm looking at €650 at worse €700...

Kind of a disappointing I/O. Music streaming, an update to maps and bragging about numbers? Even Apple isn't arrogant enough to hold an entire event for such frivolous things. As a Nexus 4 user, I take solace in the fact that my device is going to last that much longer.

All the people who waited to buy a Nexus 7 wasted their time and the Nostrodamus of tech news, Kuo, adds another miss to his notch belt.

Apple is going to steal the show at the WWDC this year.

Do you guys think many SGS4 users are pissed? I would be, specially if bought under contract.
