Not really ridiculous. It's good for the environment not to include AC adapters with everything when usually they are not needed by most people. For those who need one, Apple sells an accessory for a very affordable price.
Not it is ridiculous...It does not save the planet. Most people will just buy another charger. All it does is save Apple money and get people to buy more Apple accessories.

That’s because the cable that is included with the iPhone 12 isn’t compatible with the power blocks included with many previous iPhones. Consumers who don’t have a compatible charger lying around will need to purchase a USB-C wall charger or wireless charger in order to use their new phones.

The problem is that buying chargers or headphones separately could mean more packaging waste and emissions from separate deliveries. Some of that might add to Apple’s carbon footprint, and some of it might get tacked on to different companies’ carbon footprints if consumers decide to buy the accessories from other vendors. That doesn’t necessarily reduce emissions overall; it just spreads the greenhouse gasses around between different companies.

The iPhone 12 Pro does look cool, but iOS for me still has missing features I'm accustomed too with Android.

- AoD ( Always on Display ) is great and I love it. To have a phone with no AoD, with the screen always off, looks like the phone is dead. It's nice just walking by your phone laying on the desk and seeing if you have a missed text or phone call, if not I don't touch the phone. But on the iPhone you walk by the phone, and it may as well be off, you have no idea if there's a missed text waiting for you, need to actually touch it to see if there's a notification.

- Google News Feed panel on left side is great too, love reading the stories and news I see on there

- Swiping down anywhere on the phone to bring the Notification shade down is a big deal to me, iPhone's do this very strange thing when you swipe down, some weird search thing comes up? Why the heck would I ever want to search my phone? Search for what? I wish there was an option in Settings on the iPhone to make the swipe down gesture pull the notification shade down instead.

Those are just a few little things I like and would love to see Apple incorporate into iOS. I'm not going to write up a 10 page laundry list of how awful iOS is in 2020, it's not that bad anymore. But iOS 13 and 14 have made some good updates, seems like Apple is making iOS better lately.

Personally I really like the search function in ios. Android has the same thing via the Google search bar. To me it's a quicker way to find apps and contacts than searching for them on 1 of the iphones home screens or folders, especially if it's an app I don't use a lot. I also find it helpful for finding contacts rather than opening the contact app and then searching. I do the same thing on android. Rather than use the app drawer to find an app that's not on the home screen I just use a quick search.

Cant tell if this is sarcasm or just really drinking the Kool-Aid.

I have a drawer full of Apple AC adapters. I must have 20 of them, and most will eventually end up in a landfill having never been used.

I still have both the AC adapter and charging cable for my previous Apple Watch (the Series 5) untouched in its retail packaging.

There's no doubt there's financial incentives for Apple to tackle this issue head on. But there are also legitimate environmental reasons too that cannot be ignored.

Their are handful of articles that have done the math on this and actually they aren't saving the environment one bit by doing this, especially when they include a usb c lightning cable rather than a usb a cable. All it means is 3rd party suppliers will ramp up manufacturing of usb c adapters to try and compensate for Apple not including them. So any environmental impact Apple tries to sell people is ********.

And actually, if they really wanted to help the environment they would just get rid of lightning all together and go to usb c like everyone else. That way no 3rd parties would be manufacturing a separate type of cable just for Apple users and the market is already littered with usb c to usb c cables. People could then use those cables to charge multiple devices as it's a common standard. Apple could have easily done this, but they didn't. Care to guess why? They can't make money of it.

You can buy into what they're saying if you want, but it's BS. This is a cash grab wrapped in fancy marketing spin.

I'm kind of the same way with the chargers for my Android devices. When I went to pack up my Tab S3 so it was ready to ship when it sold (still waiting to sell it) the charger was tucked in the box still. I used the Pixel 2XL charger a couple times but it's mostly gone unused. I have Anker PowerPortPD chargers in most places I might charge.

Yup--agree with this completely. Apple has included a USB-C power adapter in only their iPad Pro models since 2018 and the iPhone 11 Pro model phones. Most people getting new phones this year probably aren't upgrading from an 11 Pro and I'd wager not a significant portion also own recent iPad Pro models. Thus, a pretty significant portion of iPhone 12 buyers will likely be shopping for new USB-C adapters. This is just shifting the carbon footprint associated with now missing USB-C adapters away from Apple to companies like Anker and Aukey who make some of the best USB-C options.

I'm all for changes that will save the environment. If this change had such and impact and also allowed Apple to save some cost, I'd be perfectly fine with it--that's good all around business. But it's complete ********. If Apple had been shipping USB-C power adapters with their phones for the past few years, I'd give 'em a pass. But they haven't, and their new Magsafe charging option also doesn't include a power adapter for that same USB-C cable, meaning more power adapters to be sold. This is just another way for Apple to generate another bit of income.

if those are Apple adapters you know they will not work with the cable shipped with the iPhone 12 right?
That means you will buy more...to have extras...at home...in the office... carry bags and so on.

So how is this helping the environment? People are going to buy more power adapters to work with the iPhone 12.
Meaning they will throw out the existing adapters and buy new.....more deliveries and more packaging...more burning of fossil fuels to make these new adapters and deliver them and so on.....this will not help the environemnt...it will do the opposite.

Except the environment reasons are complete ********. As my post just above points out, most iPhone owners probably don't have the needed USB-C power adapter. And Apple is now pushing a new charging solution that also requires the same type of USB-C power adapter.

Go count how many of those 20 Apple AC adapters you own are USB-C compatible? We'll wait....

Maybe I came across the wrong way, I just realised nearly a page had been filled with Apple. I wanted to add to it but maybe like the suggestion above, a thread in this section for Apple/iPhone sounds like a good idea. As long as it's civilised (which this section mostly seems to be).

I'd much rather talk about iPhone with people who switch, or can at least appreciate the pluses on the other side.

As for the Pixel, I'm really liking it. It's a little strange though. There's no wow factor, no big new feature, no cool features like the side app panel on Samsungs etc. But I love using it all the same. FPS works great as expected, but I still would have preferred an optical on screen one if no Face Unlock.

I do miss having 2 apps in split screen ready to go with one click from my Note. It's more work to do that on a Pixel.

I still 100% prefer bigger phones but it's not a problem like the first couple of days. I'll almost certainly keep this until the 4a 5G and decide if the money I'll lose selling to switch is worth it or not. I'd say that depends on BF deals. I have the 4a 5G pre ordered and will simply sell it sealed immediately and make some on the Bose headphones.

Can't see what else I'd switch to. Not Samsung as the Note 20 & upcoming S21 will be too similar to what I've just had. Huawei are out for obvious reasons and the rest don't quite have the camera I'd be happy with. Must say though, the hardware & 6.7" screen on the 12 Pro Max look superb....

Last iPhone I owned was the 7 Plus, lasted about 3 months before I ran back to a Nexus 6P.

But that was iOS 9 I believe? Now iOS 14 should have made big strides and not be such a locked down Fisher-Price kiddy phone. Right? Or no?

We do get spoiled with Samsung with options and split screens.. I know some hate the extras but I for one appreciate the options.. I'm always happy when I first use my Pixels but I can't fully commit to a daily one for long term bc I miss stuff from Note or other devices...

How is the speaker sound for you? And call quality...

Given the current choices on android, I would 100% be getting an iPhone is the Pros included ProMotion. Without that, it's a hard sell for me but maybe. I'll probably try the Pixel 5 here soon and then decide from there. I have a friend with the Fold 2 who is looking to go back to a regular device and has mentioned he'd be willing to sell it to me for my S20 plus and some cash. So maybe I'll give that another go. Decisions, decisions.

I'd be fascinated to see an article trying to spin the fact Apple is able to ship many more iPhones per journey as having no environmental benefits, not even one bit. They must be shipping close to 50% more iPhones per container now when you compare the dramatic reduction of the retail packaging. This in addition to a reduction in all the needless plastic that has been left out of the box.

Undoubtedly there is a cost benefit for Apple too, and I don't disagree the financial incentives for Apple were pretty persuasive in them arriving at this decision. :)

My Fold 2 sale fell through a few weeks back, so I kept mine and have been using it daily. Really enjoying it despite the camera not being my favourite. Certainly won't be posting about it in the fold thread though. Staying well clear of that mess.

The lightning cable is still in the box with a USB-C to wall adapter connection. It's the AC adapters that have been left out. The AC wall adapters have always been USB-A, which is not proprietary to Apple. I have tons of USB-A wall adapters. I have a lot less of the USB-C ones, so maybe it would have been nice for Apple to include one at least this year. ;)

Apple isn't even the first to do this. I have bought many wireless chargers for example that do not included a USB-A wall adapter. Why? Because the manufacturer knows we already have these in abundance already in our homes.

I don't for a second believe Apple is only doing this because they want to save the environment. I absolutely concede part of the reason is they see a very clear cost benefit too. As I wrote in my previous post, Apple is now able to ship many more iPhones per container - which will greatly reduce their transportation costs. It will also help the environment too.

I will actually miss the wired headphones being in the box because I actually have a use for those, unlike most people. And I do destroy them enough to be glad to have extra sets from other purchases. :)

I think the likes of Samsung are going to follow Apple on this very soon. When they see how many more iPhones Apple is able to ship per container due to the shrunken packaging, how do you ignore that as a company?

I wish Apple would give customers a wall adapter for free if they can see they might need one. For example, an Apple ID is buying their first iPhone. Or in a shop, the customer answers no when they are asked if they ever bought an Iphone before. I don't like Apple charging $19 for these as "accessories" because they removed them from the box. They should have a mechanism to dish them out for free when people have a need for one.

They will sell an estimated 215 million iPhones in the next year. Just this one move by them will not help eliminate waste. It will still do just the opposite. As most people will go out and buy adapters to fit the new cable.
Then Apple did this while releasing a new product line of Mag-Sage products that need the power adapter as well.
They removed the power adapter to help spur sales of the new product line.

Make no mistake...this was not about saving the planet...this about making more money and getting their customers to spend more to get full use of the products they are selling.

Then removing the headphones is self explanatory....they want you to buy Beat headphones or AirPods at quite larger price points.
