We do sound very similar, it’s very off putting when there are 2 versions of apps, like you mentioned the double photos app, but then theres Microsoft’s apps too. I never had an issue with txts not being received to the S23 Ultra itself, but i never use to get notifications for them, so I wouldn’t know i had received a txt until i went into the app.

I’m very intrigued by the Google Pixel, I’m doing some research (mainly Youtube videos) and there seems to be a lot of videos parsing the cameras and Android itself.

I do think that once you have looked over the fence at Android it‘s difficult to go back to IOS in the same way, without feeling like you are missing out on something. For example, i still miss certain things about the S23 Ultra, the zoom on the camera being a big one and the quality of the photos it would take. Also simple things like being able to multitask (two apps open at the same time), more customisation with widgets and just things that the iPhone can’t do simply because Apple seem to stubborn to allow.
For sure, the one thing that does always get me to lean more towards Apple though is their customer service, stability, and great hardware. I really worry about fully committing to Google when they've had sooooo many issues over the years with Quality Control.

Once you customize your Samsung phone with all the tweaks the double apps and all that stuff is a non-event... I do agree I would love to default to the Google pixels photos gallery... That would be my only complaint... I've not had any stutters or app crashes or anything like that.. I do love the pixel experience as well but all the intimidation with all the settings on Samsung can easily be learned and set it and forget it in my opinion...

Apple’s customer service is really good, iOS has had issues last year with iOS 16 being buggy which i never experienced personally but i know a lot of people did.

It’s things like this that i really like about Android, something I just can’t do on my iPhone. In fact i had this Google clock widget on my S23 Ultra when i had it, however it was a separate app i had to download.

I like the design of what Google with this kind of thing

The only thing that bothers me about the Pixel is Google themselves. Correct me if I’m wrong (anybody), but I have this perception of Google (possibly enforced by Apple) that they sell our data and that Andriod isn’t as secure as iOS.

I’m not sure I’m 100% comfortable buying a phone and giving Google access to my personal photos, passwords and so on. I could be wrong here since I don’t know much about the Pixel range, I’ve literally been advertised to try stock Android, an I like the look of the Pixel range.

Does the Pixel have anything like Samsungs Knox? And their secure folder application?
All of them "sell data".

If you work in an enterprise that uses O365, Intune already has the bases covered over yet-another-subsciption-cost Knox. As an individual, I use Google Advanced Protection Program.

Recent Pixel's fall somewhat short: lenses mega bump on the back, ho hum radios and yester-decade charging. The mystical processor hasn't proven to be a dramatic improvement, either.

On the S23+ front, I ./adb shell pm uninstall --user 0'd more than 60 google, microsoft and samsung preinstalled apps that I do not need or will ever use.

Cancelled my 15 Pro Max because the camera improvements from my 14 PM are practically nil. I don’t care about 5x over 3x. I was excited about it after seeing this years Smart HDR version get a bump but it looks like it’s mostly minuscule improvements to highlight detail when what I really want is for the inconsistencies with color reproduction to get sorted.

I think this may finally be the year I put my money where my mouth is and order a Pixel 8 Pro to supplement, not replace, my iPhone. It’s difficult because every year we get a Pixel vs iPhone camera comparison it’s a mixed bag in terms of preference for me. If this years Pixel is a major step up vs the 7 Pro then I think it will be a winner for me.

I’m also liking some of the features in Android I keep seeing. This will be my first time owning an Android phone since my Galaxy S7.

That blue looks so nice 😍

Yeah I usually go with black (or grey tone) phones but that blue looks mega, probably my favorite blue phone I've ever seen.

Generally speaking I have to say Pixels have some of the nicest designs vs. the competition (although I don't really keep an eye on all things Android related), for example the S23 Ultra looks too disjointed with all those asymmetrical cameras on the back. The recent Pixel designs all look very balanced and simple, but identifiably Pixel -- there's no mistaking them for anything else.

iPhone is still my favorite design but let's be honest it's is starting to get a bit tired and played out. I hope they really mix it up next year.

Will probably go with Porcelain. I hope the back will get frosted glass this year. Not long until the presentation!

Looks like the back will be glossy again, that's a real shame.
It was initially announced the 7 series was supposed to have the frosted glass backs, they walked it back and nothing ever heard about it since. I don't know what happened there. These slick glass backs look great in photo ops and that's it. Real world looks and grip are the worst.

Yeah I really don't like it, I hated it on my 7 Pro and on my wife's 7a.

Is anyone by any chance running the beta build of android 14? Could you please check if Google Maps is still capped at 60 hz? o_O If the app is still capped to 60 hz in the pixel 8 pro, it would be a deal breaker for me. I know it sounds silly, but I use Google Maps every single day to commute and for bike routes, and on the pixel 7, when you use it, it makes all animations get downgraded to 60 hz, so I feel like I'm using a low tier phone with a mediatek cpu... to begin with Google Maps on android is choppy as hell and this doesn't do it any favors.

Through a retail source, 9to5Google can report that Pixel 8 will cost $700 while Pixel 8 Pro will cost $1,000 – a $100 increase across the board. The Pixel 8 line will be available in stores, starting Oct. 12.

I wonder what UK prices will be, Apple gave us in the UK a price reduction compared to last years iPhone which I was not expecting. I wonder if Google will do the same and maybe the Pixel Pro 8 will be around £900. Altho that image you posted says $899 for the 8 Pro.

It will all depend on what pre-order gifts Google also include, are they usually good with that for us in the UK?

If they throw in a Pixel Watch 2, that would be a great deal.

I also get a 15% discount for a military discount my dad has. Samsung allow it to be used straight away, ie during preorders. Apple don't tho, they are sneaky and only allow the military discount to be used months after the phones have been announced. Not sure how Google deal with it?
