I've ordered a different screen protector after the disaster that was the Spigen ones.
What's interesting, is every review of the Spigen ones on Amazon UK say same thing. The black border around the protector eats into the screen.

Hopefully they fix the product.
What? 😱

That's the first i've read about that. I ordered Caseology screen protectors from Amazon and they too appear to have a black border on the edges. What is it about the black border that is damaging the screen? I may go without a screen protector if that's true.

Started my camera tests here with a few phones I have access to and all indoors for now as we are on day 2 of an expected 3 day rainstorm. Phones tested were Pixel 3, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro. The results are interesting and in many ways I was impressed how well the Pixel 3 still does amongst these much more modern / capable phones.

All phones were in full auto, with the only exception being the Pixel 3. The Pixel 3 does not automatically go into night sight, where all others will (and did) for every shot taken.

Some notes on each photo set.

1. Toy car far away.

- Touch focus was front grill of car.
- Pixel 3 was most accurate in what my eye saw for colors
- Both iPhones struggled here as the touch focal / exposure point box is quite large, it often tried to expose based on the headlights NOT the grill that I had attempted to focus on.

2. Toy car Closer
-
Touch focus point was front wheel.
- iPhone 13 pro was more color accurate, 15 pro WOULD NOT focus!

3. Vintage camera image.
- Touch focus point was camera lens
- I messed up on the angle with the Pixel 3, 13 pro was most color accurate.

I googled this earlier and someone said to do this (and it works).
Go to settings.
Network and internet.
Scroll down to Private DNS
Click Private DNS provider hostname.
Type in DNS.adguard.com

Chrome will no longer have ads. Working for me as I am giving it a go as Samsung internet browser is being a bit temperamental on this phone weirdly.

This DNS also works for Firefox on my Pixel 8 Pro. I don't yet have any ad blockers installed and so far I don't seem to need to.

A really good option to get rid of ads and stop tracking is to use NextDNS. Set up an account on the NextDNS website and choose a suitable blocklist and have a play with the plethora of settings. You will end up with a configuration ID which you can then use in PrivateDNS on your Android phone. What you add to PrivateDNS will look like this: Pixel--8-cxxxxx.dns.nextdns.io where cxxxxx is your config ID. The beauty of using NextDNS is its configurability. I recommend using these NextDNS blocklists: AdGuard Mobile Ads and HaGeZi - Multi NORMAL. Add to that any other tracking protection you need. I have Apple, Alexa and Windows protection. NextDNS is free for the first 300,000 queries each month, once exceeded you get no protection, but for a small yearly fee there is no limit. 300,000 queries is an awful lot which I doubt many will exceed on a phone.

I'm intending to do a full write up as I normally do with my thoughts this weekend.
I've not used the camera a great deal yet, but some sample shots tonight vs the iPhone 15 PM have been... Interesting.

It's way too early to get into which one is better as it's all personal preference. But I never thought I'd see the day where the iPhone was keeping up with a Pixel.

Some examples.

First is a zoom in pretty low light. On first glance, the pixel looked the clear winner. Until I zoomed in. And I think the iPhone retains way more natural detail. I also think iPhones yellow hue seen on EVERY shot lends itself well to this scene. As the only light source is the lamps which are yellow in hue.

Adding to this site may have compressed a little but viewing on the respective phone screens, the iPhone has more detail. Both are good photos given the conditions and the fact it’s a 5x lens, though.

Next up is a tricky shot as there's a lamp right behind in the scene. The iPhone has done it's typical blow out but it has kept doggo in good focus. Pixel has balanced the whole scene but details are not quite as sharp on doggo.

Lastly another 5 x telephoto shot. This time in the kitchen which has much better lighting than the room with my doggo.

Some fruit 🍇.

I think the pixel wins the fruit round (marginally).

Pretty tricky conditions but the biggest takeaway for me is how capable the iPhones camera actually is this year. The blown out highlights remain an issue.

Ok, first impressions coming from a long time iPhone user who's been using her Pixel phone for the last couple of hours....

I love it!!!

Omg, there is so much you can do with Android, it's crazy. I don't even need a third party app or anything like that to set my keyboard to pink.….

And the typing on this phone is amazing! I love how strong the haptics are! Sure my iPhone had haptics, but this is crazy!

There is still so much I need to get used to and so much to learn, but so far, I love it. The customization option like resizing widgets and placing apps exactly where you want them... Ok, what?!

And the camera? 😍 I'm even finding the emojis to be just a *little* bit cuter on this phone.

I'll see how I feel after using this for about 2 weeks, but so far, I feel like I've made a great decision!

I love that you love it. All the things you've picked up on are the things I love about pixels. Haptics are just incredible. iPhone could never.

And yeah, being able to place an app anywhere on the screen is mind-blowing coming from an iPhone, right?! 😅😛

Just curious why did you go with the 8 / 8 pro over the fold? I've been leaning a little bit on the fold myself but so afraid I'd end up smashing the somewhat fragile device in short order at work.

You can. Check method #2 for instructions on how to enable on iOS.
Doesn’t work well on iOS. My network speed was noticeably diminished with this enabled and ads were still popping through. Plus, I’m always skeptical about routing all my traffic through a third party like this.

Thankfully, not a necessity on iOS with the availability of installable content blockers.

I want the Fold, a lot. But I have trouble reconciling their 1,800 dollar phone has a generation old chip compared to the 8 series. Especially with all the new features that are allegedly only possible on the G3, there's no way I'd even considering getting the Fold until the next version based on chipset alone.

They need to rejigger the release schedule like they did with the Watch 2 to get the chipsets in more parity, at least.

That's all just me though.

But if you go by that projection... Pixel Fold will always be a generation behind the Pixel series. If anything, you'll get the Pixel Fold 2 when that's released and trade it in when the Pixel 9 Pro comes out.

Then repeat that cycle going forward.
