Quite a few EU/UK Pixel owners disappointed that the cool AI etc stuff is not included on their phones, typical Google = US (same as Apple).

I don’t think that’s a Google Or Apple issue. I think it has to due to privacy and data laws in the other countries. Theyre legally not allowed to include those features.

They could. It would just be more work. The EU wants Google and Apple to not limit new features to their own apps in order for them to not further create walled gardens that flex monopolistic power, so they need to build APIs and make features system-wide. Right now I can get Google to help me write an email in Gmail, but not ProtonMail. I can do cool AI stuff to photos in Pixel Studio, but not Photoshop Camera.

Apple also has said they won't launch new features in the EU unless they can tell them if the implementation meets the DMA, but the EU responded that even stating that means that Apple intends the new features to be monopolistic. I don't think Apple asking for pre-approval before launch is asking too much, but the EU seems to want to wait for complaints and then hit companies with fees rather than making more clear regulations.

I think some of it has to do with stricter privacy and data protection laws in the EU e.g., GDPR.

However, a question should be why don't EU companies step up and provide more desirable tech products/services for people in the EU instead of those customers having to rely so much on U.S. companies?

Don't have my SIM in this phone yet ( need a case ASAP ), but man the rounded corners are so comfortable and nice, and the bright display is great.

This is a very nice phone.

My simple homescreen setup to start;

Now that over a day has passed, thoughts on the modem? It is unfortunate that they still use Exyshit modems.

I would never accept a phone with a scratch. Instance return
You're right. If I received an iPhone like this it'd be an insta-return. For some (irrational) reason I always hold Apple to a higher standard. Already chatted with support and replacement device will be delivered Tuesday.
Off topic, what web browser y'all using on this beast?
Samsung internet as I already have passwords etc., saved there and like the ad-blocking options and dark mode. I will probably eventually go back to Firefox as it also has good ad-blocking and supports Dark Reader add-on which is the best dark mode I've ever used (I use it with Safari on iOS for true dark mode). You can set individual web sites and select different shades of gray or true black. I won't use Chrome until it natively supports dark mode for all web sites.

**Edit- what is the background you are using? That is really nice!
Agreed, I would exchange it. These phones cost too much for that to be on the screen already. It's one thing if I put the scratch on the screen, it's totally different if I received it that way. And this early on you would 100% be guaranteed a brand new phone.
Yep, already done, thanks for slapping some sense into me 😂

One thing we forget to mention about the Pixel's and why I continue to buy them is that they still use a SIM card. We still have a choice and I am not anti eSIM. Far from it, it's that carriers are still dealing with growing pains due to Apple forcing everyone's hand. In my case which I use Mint Mobile (last 5 years) and I do because I absolutely HATE contract billing where you need an accountant to figure it out. 🤣 And I only pay $15 per month, 5GB of data/hotspot and unlimited everything else.

In the case of Mint Mobile, I can only do two eSIM swaps per 12 months for free. After that I get charged. Possibly this will change in the future but for now, that's why I rely on SIM cards.

Yeah, but it's just $3. Some of the big carriers try to hit you with $35 "upgrade" fees when you switch devices--even if you BYO phone and activate it yourself.

That background wallpaper is awesome, right. It's from the Google Pixel page, a custom artwork done I think by a Japanese artist for the Pixel 7 or Pixel 8 release a year or two ago.

Is the XL’s widith the same/very similar to 15PM ? Currently have a 13PM and kinda got tired of not ideal one hand use, pretty much convinced me to go regular pro next time.

But tried a friend’s 15PM a month ago and it was perfect, they reduced the width just enough for comfy one hand for me.

They mention the main negatives as being the mixed results with the stills camera and the video recording being under par for a flagship. Though they did ponder if these will be improved by a software update.

No matter how you twist it guys.. in 2024.. the shortcomings are simply unacceptable for this price.
These phones should have simply been $200 less in each tier.

Wait for a software update for a camera fix on a "flagship" in 2024 ? 2012 called..

You're right. I guess I'll return my phone and spend $900 on an iPhone 15 that doesn't have an always on display, has a 60hz refresh rate, and USB 2 speed.

Desperately needed a case, swing by my local T-Mobile store on lunch break and grabbed this for now;

I don't know..... I use my 15 PM and the P9PXL and I don't see difference in the camera to be honest. I don't see any performance differences. I think the battery and sound is better on my 15 PM though! But not to the extent to make big difference. Then FaceID is awesome!
But then the Google Assistant and AI, Maps, Photo editing, Notifications, AOD and call screening are better on my P9PXL.

I think there are pros and cons to each flagship smartphone. They all have their shortcomings. IMHO the P9PXL is worth the price.

The Pixel 9 Series [not counting the Fold] is what Apple's 2020-Present lineup should have been...

iPhone 12/13/14/15
iPhone 12/13/14/15 [Pro]
iPhone 12/13/14/15 [Pro Max]

Samsung should have used this naming convention instead:

Galaxy S22/S23/S24
Galaxy S22/S23/S24 [Pro]
Galaxy S22/S23/S24 [Note]

The only negatives which are fair is portrait mode not having 5x and generally google have stopped caring about portrait mode. Stills there are only issues really. Still a pixel camera and one of the best out there

No phone that is released is ever perfect out the gate. Updates will always be needed to polish the software.

We are still waiting for Samsung to fix shutter lag 8 years later

We are in 2024 and the next iPhone 16 and 16 plus will have 60hz, no always on display and no telephoto camera.

That’s embarrassing
