What are the drawbacks of being in beta? I've been avoiding them but getting such cool features so early is interesting

You might as well wait now as 14 stable is coming out soon ..I've unenrolled from beta for now so I can get the stable when it comes out and not stay in beta quarterly

Yeah I'm waiting for 14 on Oct 4th, but I think this thing to expand apps isn't coming till December pixel drop and people can use it already in beta

Going to have to update and check this one out. Been using my P7P and S23U the last couple weeks. Performance and battery life have been great on the 14 Beta on the Pixel Fold but something has been going on to where all my calls will start going to voicemail until I restart the device and then they start coming through again. This never happened when I was on Android 13 or the earlier Android 14 betas, just the last couple updates. Hopefully this latest update will fix the issue.

As I walked through London today it’s just a barrage of iPhones. Everywhere. And this is me in that camp as well. So depressing to see.

Took a look in my local EE shop to see the 15’s-and they are exactly that. iPhones.

But then I took a look at the Pixels and finally saw a Pixel Fold for the first time.

What an absolutely beautiful device.

I have to have it.

The theft of iPhones by guys on mopeds, bikes, foot etc. should really peak today in London :(

So been struggle with finding an optimal case setup. Think I’ve finally found something that works for me so thought I’d share my journey. Apologies in advance for the length of the post.

Tried this case first as I wanted an integrated kickstand to be able to have an ability to prop it up for optimal video viewing. Fit was fine but kickstand only properly supported the phone with the open Fold in ‘portrait’ orientation, defeating the purpose in the first place. Also don’t like the integrated plastic front screen protector, so moved on.

IMG_0084.jpeg

Second case was this one, also from Amazon. Better case but at this point I realized I wanted a case with integrated ‘magsafe’ magnets to offer the ability for me to use the vent mount in my car or any of the numerous magsafe type wireless chargers I have around my house. Tried sticking an extra metal ring to the case and didn’t work well (me arbitrarily guessing where to put the ring probably didn’t help). So looked for something else.

IMG_0085.jpeg

This was my latest attempt and thought I had a winner (clarification—mine was black but the link now brings you to a white option 🤷‍♂️. I noticed what’s probably the same case with a different name available on Amazon in black). It wasn’t bulky, a surprise considering the integrated kickstand and leather back panel.

IMG_0087.jpeg

Used it for a few weeks and liked it but the front panel edges are very thin and subsequently cracked and broke. Also, the magnetic ring came unglued and had to be re-adhered. I’ve kept the back panel but using only the back was less than ideal so onto my latest venture.

Here’s what I’m using now, a combination of a case and better self-adhered magnetic ring to give magsafe compatibility. I decided to forgo an integrated kickstand because I picked up one of these Satechi Magnetic Wallet Stands which works great as a stand. With magsafe compatibility on my Fold case, problem solved.

IMG_0088.jpeg IMG_0089.jpeg IMG_0090.jpeg

The ESR ring comes with a little plastic nub that fits in the usb-c port on the phone and holds a guide along the back of the phone to help you determine where to place the ring. They don’t have one specifically for the Pixel Fold but did for the smalled Galaxy S22/23 so I used it and confirmed the location worked with a magsafe charger before adhering the ring. The case has a matte finish with a subtle amount of texture which feels great and so far, the ring is sticking to it.

Here a photo of the final result:

IMG_0032.jpeg IMG_0033.jpeg

Think I’ve finally settled in on an optimal setup. Considered just adding the ring to the back of the Fold itself as I’d love to use it caseless but don‘t trust myself to not drop it and also found opening the Fold with a case on is easier.

Nice you got there with a little experimenting…I’m still holding strong with my Latercase and maybe add the ring to it down the line …

I never took a pic, but I did a self added magsafe ring to a case for my pixel. Couldn't get it to stay on. Ended up tracing it out with a fine pointed sharpie, and then dremeling it out. Then I glued it down with super glue.

Despite my terrible Dremel skills it came out pretty perfectly with the ring sitting pretty flush with the outside of the case.

Hopefully with qi 2 becoming the standard, more cases will have integrated rings.

For mag safe, you can simply add a metal plate inside the phone case. This is what I have:

(Wireless charging still works. I've also never liked how a magnetic strip looks outside of the phone)

For stand, I also for creative, I got a keychain stand. I always have my keys with me, so if ever need a stand there it is. As for case I have a latercase. I kinda solved the same problems you had without getting anything bulky on my phone

Just put a metal plate inside the phone case. No need to have some ugly MagSafe accessory outside the phone

Not sure why people make it so complicated. I have my metal plate inside my latercase, and done. No one can even tell

How does wireless charging still work? Those plates would block the entire induction coil. Hell, my Pixel stand won't charge anything with a magsafe ring, much less an entire metal plate. Another dual Anker Qi charger I have also sometimes doesn't work with a device with a ring, magsafe or otherwise if I don't place it perfectly.

I've tried placing a magsafe ring inside a case and it never works well. Either the case just sit well over the ring or the strength of magnetic strength isn't enough to keep it securely mounted.

You can place it in such a way that it does not cover the entire portion. Also, in one of my pictures above, you see my phone mounted via a magnetic car phone holder. Not only does it hold it while folded, but I've tried unfolded and it is strong enough to also keep it that way. Will take a pic when I can

I would have to try wireless charging again. I don't have one myself, it's not a feature I care about. I charge via type c. I remember being at one of my buddies and I placed it in his wireless charging out of curiosity and I saw a charging confirmation, then grabbed my phone again. Maybe it was placed super perfectly, or maybe I got lucky in that instant, but maybe it wasn't going to keep a charge, I don't know.

I mainly wanted it for my car phone holder, and it works like a charm. I sometimes put my phone unfolded there with half of the screen with Maps/gps, and the other half with YouTube music. It's pretty cool.

The metal plate also comes with a sticky you can remove to paste it onto the phone. But I didn't do that, I kept it on. The pressure of the case holding to the phone is enough to keep it in place, so I didn't even have to glue anything to my phone.

If I had wireless charging myself I could do some heavier testing, but I really don't care about it. I just wanted my phone to be as light as possible and as least bulky as possible while doing everything I want it to. Hence the latercase, the metal plate inside the case, and the keychain stand

Gotcha. Won’t work for me as I want to use my existing MagSafe mounts/charger so need to use the ring. Thanks for sharing though.

Sure thing! Yeah I was never into those rings, just makes the phones look odd. In my opinion.

These plates won't work with the Pixel stand I've tested B4
I don't really get the love for wireless charging. It's incredibly slow. People already complain about the fold normal charging speeds with 30W, I can't imagine with a wireless charger
