Stock 17" is perfect yes, first stock-version I have ever bought (Ordered, estimated shipping is the 7th...), which is quite nice.

Made me wonder though, "have a fallen behind, has my standards dropped", feels weird not requiring more than what Apple thinks "all" should have. ;) Got over that though, I'm happy with it, apart from the 2gb of ram that will require an upgrade if the 2gb chip ever drops quite a bit in price.

Really, this mentality is just nuts...... that anything beyond the top-end can't be called a "gaming machine".

i still don't think that the MBP is a very game-oriented machine. 2-3 years down the line i can see myself using Photoshop and Logic Pro still, but for gaming I'd probably have to look elsewhere.

anyways, i really don't care anymore :p

The 160 is part of the 17" stock. I think the 17" stock is the almost perfect C2D '06-'07 mobile Mac. :)

I agree; I sold an unopened 15" MacBook Pro Core Duo on Monday evening just before the Core 2 Duo came out. At this point, I was dead set on getting the white MacBook fully kitted out (120GB / 2GB); but with the student ADC Discount, for only $700 more, I can get the 17", and am leaning towards this now. I think the 17" is the (almost) perfect 06/07 mobile Mac!

Hi - long time lurker, first post.
I have the same decision to make, I'm a student - money is a big consideration but my situation is not dire, mainly i want value for money (i know most people do:rolleyes: ). I was thinking a MB with 2g of RAM, but I would like to play the odd game (3d first person shooters mainly). And now with the MBPs such good value, a student ADC discount, and a tax deduction, I'm thinking of going MBP.

I would just buy one, except that I'm wondering what will happen with the next revision MBs. I imagine they'll keep the integrated graphics, but maybe if that was improved a bit as well as the change to C2D I could get manage. The other thing is that I prefer the MB formfactor - I carry my laptop with me every day, why, why cant they make a smaller MBP:confused:

So any guesses on whether MBs will get anything other than just a CPU bump?

Like what? Can't think of anything except a 160GB HD option will likely be there.

I'd say go with the the 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. 160 gig hard drive, 2GB of RAM and AppleCare.

I'm a student as well I can understand the money concern. I'm upgrading from a 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook w/1GB of RAM and an 80GB Hard drive and was for a while going back and forth between the MacBook, iMac, and MacBook Pro. Then I decided just to compromise with myself and go for double what I have and that configuration about does it. Coulda gone with the MacBook but my major is in Mass Communications and I didn't feel comfortable with integrated graphics.

It's pretty likely the MacBooks will be updated before the holidays. Why not wait until then to make your choice. You don't get great value by comparing these new C2Ds with rumors and guesses about what kind of upgrades the MacBook will get.

I know it's hard, but it should only be a few more weeks!

Macbooks are terrible value now until they are upgraded. A Black MB with 120 disk and 2MB RAM costs more than a MBP with the same specs.

I am not sure that a proprietary mbox format is any better in the long run. I have bounced between Mac and Windows for years and really wish I could move mail back and forth to suit the current system of choice. Though with Spotlight I am tempted to convert all mail to text files and be done with it.

MBOX is the most UNproprietary format ever conceived. It is just the RFC 821 network layout dumped into a file. To be clear, it's one gigantic text file that looks like this:

To: fred@foo.com
From: jim@bar.com
Subject: Hi!

<Text of email>
To: sue@foo.com
From: anita@bar.com
Subject: Bye!

<Text of email>

On the other hand, the MS formats are a totally cryptic binary format that has confounded people to reliably export.

Don't know what Mac Mail uses, but I think Thunderbird and others use mbox.

Hey, if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated-
Im ready to pull the trigger on a macbook pro. Im at Uni, and Im ordering the computer to my home address. I dont really trust the delivery here at my student accomodation. BUT, when I come to order it says-

"Please note deliveries are made by carrier during business hours. You will need to be present to sign for your order. For your convenience, you may prefer to have your order delivered to your office address. Please note, if you choose this option, goods may be left with reception or the Goods Inwards Department."

Does this mean that only I can sign for the delivery, or is it ok if someone at home signs for it??

Any quick replies would be great- i want this thing ordered! :)

Thanks

i'm not really up with what intel is doing with integrated graphics - any chance it will be improved (conceding discrete graphics is not going to happen)?

...and for comparison, the old MBP manual said 120 degrees in the same place. Here's the link to the original Core Duo manual for reference:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_Pro_Users_Guide.pdf

It looks like the C2Ds open further than the CDs.

I was at my local apple store and was comparing the new C2D MBP with the old CD MBP side by side... I DO NOT SEE ANY IMPROVEMENT in the opening angle of new MBP compared to the old one... I don't know if both are 135 or if both are 120 but I can tell u for sure, they both have the same angle of opening... NO CHANGE...

This kinda sucks tho'... would have loved it open a bit more ;)

pal :)

Display angle

From page 69 of the 17" MBP C2D user's manual:

Built-in Display

Adjust the angle of the display to minimize glare and reflections from overhead lights
and windows. Do not force the display if you meet resistance. The display is not meant
to open past 135 degrees.

Do you live in Australia? Just spent some time hanging out over there. Uni is post high school and college is high school. Love it.

Anyhow, in the US as long as it is someone who is at the residence signing for it you will be fine. Not sure if Australian delivery law is different. I think you're pretty safe to have your parents sign for it. Worst case scenario is you have to go to fed ex yourself to pick it up. Still pretty safe.

Good luck, I think you are all about to be done with finals soon! (at least in brisbane)

Hey man,

I live in Melbourne and I get quite alot of stuff delivered to my home address. The courier drivers really don't give a rats who signs for it, as long as someone is home that they can leave it with at the specified address. Usually if nobody answers they leave a card in the postbox with details on where to pick up or how to request a re-delivery. Should be fine to get your parents to sign!

Now pull that trigger! Good luck :)

Hey folks,

Ordered a 15" 2.33 / 2GB / 160GB / glossy on Tuesday @10pm EST.

Original ship date was 02/11 with delivery on or before 09/11. Just got an email say it's shipped already and it's now saying delivery on or before 03/11!

Way to set and then exceed expectations Apple!

Hope everyone else is getting earlier ship dates :D Seems like Apple are really conservative on promising devliery, i guess to avoid disappointment...

Mate I live in Melbourne too and I too ordered a 15" 2.33 160GB but with 3GB ram and standard display and modem too. However I ordered mine Wednesday around 11am.

I too had the EXACT same dates as you, and I too just received an email saying it has shipped with the same dates as you

WOOOHOOOO I CAN'T WAIT :D

Info needed...

OK guys, I am almost putting the pedal to the metal and ordering the new MBP here in Switzerland...but I need your advice (those who received new MBPs already) on the following questions:

1 - Any quality issues identified so far, such as mooing/whining/shutdowns?

2 - What is the heat level of the new MBPs, especially in CPU-intensive apps and periods?

3 - Is there any difference between the 128 and the 256 GPU? I mean, for normal gaming/apps, nothing hardcore;

4 - Is 1Gb enough or should I order 2Gb? I am not a heavy user, relying instead on iApps, Office, Internet apps and perhaps some Parallels stuff...

Thanks in advance!

Let me see... your MBP was going to ship out in February, was going to take 7 months to be delivered to you, and now it will get there in March...

I'm not impressed

P.S.

Sorry for Yankeeing (pun intended) your chain. More than half of the ppl on this board are from the US, where we put the month numeral before the day :D
