2.33 C2D MBP w/ Matte.
i concur with the matte people. I sit in my lecture halls looking at everybody's screen. Glossy is bad for lecture hall style lighting. from behind, i see the users face, part of his hands, the ceiling light behind him, and barely anything (given that it is an HP laptop). matte however, i see no glare, and can easily see that he/she is checking his or her facebook. Matte FTW.

you understand that they may not see glare even if you do due to the angle...

What time zone are you in? I ordered the same thing you did at 8:00pm Tuesday PST and it has not shipped yet. I did however get it through the ADC store, which may be why I have a delay. Does anyone know it ADC members normally have to wait longer to get their order approved or something?
Pacific time zone (California), just a guess about the ADC thing but it seems plausible that they would have to verify your status before getting the discount and placing the order.

I'm buying the low Macbook pro. I'm going to go 2 GB and I know apple charges a lot more. I'm in the UK and was wondering where I could get an extra 1GB stick that will work (preferrably cheap)? Or should I just pay the extra from apple? Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Go to Crucial RAM, there's a link at the top of the page, beside "Shop"

A bit OT but I never understood the purpose of taking a laptop to lecture, especially if it's a science class. Unless you're using a tablet, there's no way you could compensate for all the diagrams and re-writes a teacher does on the board with a regular laptop. I've seen a few people with laptops when I was taking classes like Microbio and it was pretty silly.

the only class i take my laptop (borrowed IBM Thinkpad from a friend until the macbook was released) is to my Intro to ICS class, where i sit and code my lab up in java while the professor goes over the material. note the word "everyone's" okay it was an exaggeration, maybe 1/2 the class (50 people) brings their laptops. I see a few macbook pros (around 4) around all with matte except one. there is a reason why the matte is still available on the MBP. regular Macbooks are only glossy cause the avg. consumer does not care.

you understand that they may not see glare even if you do due to the angle...

true, but they had to adjust their screen initially to reduce glare from their perspective. then the light gets bounced off at me. with matte screens there is no reflection whatsoever, but there is that haze. I prefer that instead of a bright light shining back at me. if i wanted a mirror, i'd buy one.

Question for those who already have gotten their new C2D MBP:

Does the trackpad and its preferences allow a "right click" when you have two fingers placed on it while clicking the button? The Macbook allows this, just seeing if it carried over into the MBP by now.

Very curious, because i love that feature of my macbook, but am thinking about an upgrade now.....

Also, i went and look at MBP's at an apple store the other day to compare the size and weight of a 15" compared to a macbook, and the MBP, even though is heavier, actually felt lighter than the macbook.....am i just weird or has anyone else noticed this too??

I don't see why not. The regular CoreDuo MBP that I had allowed you to do this.

Well, I'm living vicariously through some of you, waiting for my damn order to ship. :) I was able to return my 17day old MBP to get a C2D MBP.

The two-finger right click was available on the previous MBP. I think it was included in the 10.4.7 update.

But to answer your question, yes it works. There is barely any weight difference, the MBP is bigger so I think it is less dense.

The glossy vs. matte choice was pretty much a no-brainer for me for a number of reasons. I'm coming from a 1GHz TiBook with matte (obviously) and an (otherwise) POS Compaq laptop with 15" glossy. The one thing I always hated about the TiBook screen was trying to keep it clean. Even though I had a leather keyboard cover from OWC I would still get the key marks and they were next to impossible to remove. The gloss on the Compaq just wipes clean in a second. Did they ever fix that design flaw of TiBooks?

Has anyone used the gloss on the MacBook Pro in near total darkness with the keyboard illuminated? Now that I think about it, I wonder if that doesn't cause some gawdawful reflections.

If they are using a crizal or similar glare coat, then no the kb shouldn't produce any sort of objectionable reflection.

Tuesday is so far away! (most of the stores said they are not expecting any additional shipments until that point. Fedex ground delivers tue-sat here and not monday.)

By your logic, you could even game with a Macbook. It runs WoW admirably. Right now I don't really consider myself a "gamer" but I'm running my PC rig for gaming, and I get decent FPS.

I would by NO means call it a gamer's machine. In fact, I'm embarrassed when I take it to LAN parties -- everybody's loading BF2 twice as fast as I am.

Alienware? Their current "gamer" notebook can be specced to Dual 512MB GeForce Go 7900 GS video cards. 3DMark benchies for 1 of these cards is in the 7700~ range, almost twice that of MBP's.

When I think "a gamer's computer" I don't think "most people don't need that" -- I think "top of the line, 1600x1200 8xAA, full settings." In fact, I would never think laptop, except for 10-lb. behemoths. "A gamer's machine" is a Windows desktop.

Hi, i think youre completely right, a mac isnt a gamer platform, theyre not fast enough...

Lol when i saw alienware i decided to compare prices... Alienware is actually the most expensive!! Okay, well the mbp costs approx. 525 kr. more, which is like $90.. At least here in Denmark... but check this:

Macbook Pro 15" 2.33 ghz - $3334.47 With VAT and Delivery..

as you can see the specs are almost exactly the same, except the alienware didnt have an option for a build-in bluetooth receiver, therefore i chose the dongle.. Furthermore the Alienware doesnt have a webcam, illuminated keyboard, magsafe (duh!) or even a slotloading drive.

As for size, the Alienware is bigger, 8 mm thicker, 7mm wider, 3CM deeper (metric system ftw) and it weighs 170g (1/3 of a pound) more, without the battery, lol.. I think that its safe to say that the $90 is worth it

My god im bored, lol.. thought this might help for those trying to justify spending this much for a laptop!.. I am luckily no longer one of the people in doubt.. im just trying to kill time as i wait for my 17" c2d mbp :p...

One of my friends once considered buying an Alienware (hes a gamer), but he then dug into it, and decided that if he was going to be gaming seriously on it, then the rig he was going to need would be way too big and heavy.. hehe... so he bought a (less powerful) HP 17", and saved himself a bunch =)...

Lol, i got a little off topic.. but wee, some time passed by..

(i have to wait till the 9. november to get mine according to FONA, im expecting a delay tho..)

That's not true because when I tried to install my sister's Tiger disc that came with her iBook g4 on my PB, it said explicitly that it could not be installed on this particular machine.
If the iBook is older than your PowerBook it won't work. Each computer only works with the system it ships with forward.

But you may be right. I guess Apple could be putting a "look for model of Mac" in the startup process to keep cross Mac installations down.

Not supposed to do that anyway.

I find matte to be very manageable in regards to cleaning. I'm currently on a 2-3 year old Toshiba laptop that has never had the screen properly cleaned, and it looks fine.

I had a MBP arrive Tuesday lunch time, about the second that the Apple store was updated with the new ones. :D

I got on the phone straight away and talked to my very nice UK Apple sales person and organised to have it returned and then ordered another one.

Mine (15", 2.33, 2GB, 160GB, matte) looks like it's still set to be shipped on the 2nd and arrive on the 9th. It's a bit far away, so hopefully it gets here a little earlier. It was pretty horrible to finally get a mac (I've been waiting about six years... never had the money before) and then have it in my living room, sitting in a box for two days, before the courier picked it up again to send back to Apple.

The sales person I had on the phone was incredibly nice and I ended up with a discount bigger than if I'd even ordered from the EDU store. Is that usual? :D

Oh, and I'm not a student..

Don't know how it is in the UK, but here in the US you'll find Apple's prices are not significantly higher than reputable 3rd party. Crucial's 2GB sticks are actually more than the Apple-installed option.

On the "shipping" thread, one person posted an unbelievably low price for a 2GB stick - turns out they were looking at the wrong thing. But the whole "Apple charges WAY too much for RAM" has become a wikiality here, and telling people to actually check seems to have little effect.

One question:

Is the magsafe actually an Apple patent? I mean can other PC firms use the same "mechanism"?

Yes, while presenting the MacBook Pro CD at Macworld 2006, Steve Jobs said it was patented, the magnetic latch however, is not patented, since Acer copied that in the Travelmate 3xxx:mad: :p

Only FedEx ground (dhl) in certain areas or if you get overnight delivery with the saturday option (read: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$).

My graphic design lecturer at Uni has a MBP with a glossy screen. And he designs books, manuals, posters etc for print. Guess you can get away with using a glossy...

That Alienware doesn't even come close to what Apple offers...actually I am amazed by people in these forums who dare to compare the MBPs with such horrible behemoths that are nothing but desktops without the CPU box, including Alienwares and Dells (Sony is the only brand still showing some degree of positive comparison with an Apple)...no thanks, I will stick to Apple!
