Hi, i think youre completely right, a mac isnt a gamer platform, theyre not fast enough...

Lol when i saw alienware i decided to compare prices... Alienware is actually the most expensive!!

snip...

I think if you compare the current MBP to comparable Dell's and others this will be a similar trend. You might have to make some subjective adjustments (OS, size, battery, warrenty, etc.) but I think you wil see that the MBP is about the same cost as others.

This was the same case when the MBP was released. The gap widened around late May. This is when the others started cutting prices.

There are 2 different business ideas here:
1-Cut prices on the same prices over time for the same hardware
2-Add better hardware to the computer at the same price

The 2nd option makes more profit per machine since they are, at times, selling hardware that they are able to get cheaper than they using (since their suppliers opt for option 1). The 2nd option can only be successful if you are not under a lot of competition because if your prices are too high, if you have less competition, there aren't as many better alternatives. This approach wasn't a problem for Apple during the PPC days since the chips could not be directly compared. Now that they are using Intel chips approach 2 above is going to be harder since people can choose a Dell that has better hardware for the price Apple is asking. But, I think they will still be able to keep up sales because they have a devoted customer core and offer a superior operating system...but in time it might prove to be difficult.

Do you live in Australia? Just spent some time hanging out over there. Uni is post high school and college is high school. Love it.

Anyhow, in the US as long as it is someone who is at the residence signing for it you will be fine. Not sure if Australian delivery law is different. I think you're pretty safe to have your parents sign for it. Worst case scenario is you have to go to fed ex yourself to pick it up. Still pretty safe.

Good luck, I think you are all about to be done with finals soon! (at least in brisbane)

Hey man,

I live in Melbourne and I get quite alot of stuff delivered to my home address. The courier drivers really don't give a rats who signs for it, as long as someone is home that they can leave it with at the specified address. Usually if nobody answers they leave a card in the postbox with details on where to pick up or how to request a re-delivery. Should be fine to get your parents to sign!

Now pull that trigger! Good luck :)

Do I live in australia?? I wish!! lol!

Nope Im in the uk. College comes before University here. So college is University in Australia/America?

Well anyways Ive pulled the trigger on the Base model. Got it through my HE store, so I got a massive discount and a free 3 year warranty with it (without buying applecare!). Really cant wait til I get it.

Ive waited for ages for these C2D's, I was originally intending to go for a macbook, but the MBP was too good to refuse with the specs they were offering.

Enjoy your new macs guys!! :)

Here's another comparison picture of the old and the new vents. I want to know how the new vent looks inside the machine, got to be a service manual somewhere on the Internet.

I moved over to the UK from Australia at the start of March. It's much nicer over here :p

In Australia we have Primary School, High School, and then University. For the last couple of years of high school you do what is the equivalent of your AS and A levels (or whatever they are now called) - which then allow you to get into University.

That Alienware doesn't even come close to what Apple offers...actually I am amazed by people in these forums who dare to compare the MBPs with such horrible behemoths that are nothing but desktops without the CPU box, including Alienwares and Dells (Sony is the only brand still showing some degree of positive comparison with an Apple)...no thanks, I will stick to Apple!

I dont think its fair to call that alienware machine crap hehe.. its a decent machine.. actually its a nice machine in windows world :p... but its not a macbook pro at all =)

Hehe yea the Intel transition is so sweet.. I remembered when apple announced it, i was kinda pissed cause apple lost some of their uniqueness by converting to "regular" pc stuff... but my god, its so sweet.. all over!

Is There Something Wrong With My Baby???

I take it as fact that only the 15" MBPs are being shipped and are on peoples warm and happy laps. So I ordered the 17" (yeah, video prof here so went the 100g 7200 HD, matte & 3g RAM - Do I wanna game or do I wanna make MONEY???).

If I'm correct, any word as to why Apple is having separation anxiety in parting with those 17" babies? The FedEx stork is waiting.

So, I ask - IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY BABY?????

The glossy vs. matte choice was pretty much a no-brainer for me for a number of reasons. I'm coming from a 1GHz TiBook with matte (obviously) and an (otherwise) POS Compaq laptop with 15" glossy. The one thing I always hated about the TiBook screen was trying to keep it clean. Even though I had a leather keyboard cover from OWC I would still get the key marks and they were next to impossible to remove. The gloss on the Compaq just wipes clean in a second. Did they ever fix that design flaw of TiBooks?

Has anyone used the gloss on the MacBook Pro in near total darkness with the keyboard illuminated? Now that I think about it, I wonder if that doesn't cause some gawdawful reflections.

Maybe the screen had abrasions from the leather rubbing against it. It would be worse to a gloss screen. (and you can scratch the gloss screen easier. microfiber cloths ftw!).

Hopefully when using the macbook pro in the dark, one would not have the screen tilted at such an acute angle that it reflects the keyboard. but who knows. A matte screen would not have that problem hands down.

Rediculous if you ask me

Here we go again...
These last MBP's came out how long ago? Like 6 months ago? Well I finally decided to buy a Mac. We use all Windows at work and it was time for me to join the computer world again. Everyone said go with Mac, they are better than IBM PC's. My wife owned a IBM PC for a couple years and finally got rid of it a year ago. It was a piece of crap.
Well here I get a MBP just months ago and now a new machine is out already?!?!?!?!? Seems like they are almost as bad as Commodore used to be. I won't ever be another Mac. Well I will someday but I'm going to wait until they decide what they're going to come out with and stick with, then I'll buy.
With Commodore I bought a Vic-20, then later when the Commodore 64 was out then that. then they started with talk of the Commodore 128. I refused. I felt the same way then. I'm not going to buy another Commodore until they stick with something and decide what machine they want to be their machine. I made a good choice. Years after the 128 came out they talked of the Amiga. Well guess where Commodore is now, Bankrupt and non existant! Maybe Apple could learn from them becuase they are headed the same way!

Welp, I bought a glossy 15" 2.16 base model. They have some more in stock in Sherman Oaks if anyone else is LA based...

I haven't opened it yet. I want to contemplate if the MB Pro is worth the extra money(for me) over the soon to be updated MacBooks. I also want to think about the glossy/matte thing for a bit. I was all super-glossy guy until everyone on this thread started questioning me! :D I looked at them in the store and the glossy still looks brighter and more vibrant to me, so I'll probably stick with it, but I can wait a few hours to let it soak in rather than making a $179 mistake! :)

I haven't posted much on MacRumors, but thanks to all of you who chatted about this so much over the last few months!

Mike

I hear you man... Last week I went to the supermarket and got the latest version of pringles (exp. date 1/07). Guess what.. I just got back from the supermarket and the 2/07 version i already out. WTF? Last time I ever buy pringles.

I think he was joking or I hope he was  because he's going to be waiting forever to buy anything to do with computers.

so you're saying apple should not update to Core 2 Duo, because everyone bought the Core Duo version? Lets see..they should have stuck with the powerbook until the core 2 duo was released. hm good strategy. I'm sorry i knew the core 2 duo version was coming out sometime near the end of the year. that was back in july. I waited. You should have too. Dont complain here about it.

Not only that, but let the PC manufacturers stay ahead with their Core 2 Duo notebooks? Now that apple switched to Intel, expect updates much more frequently. doh! Apple is known for staying on the cutting edge.

there will probably be another update come the leopard release. Oh well. At least i have my 64 bit computing.

there should be a law for great humour like this :D

I think the message here is that "joining the computer world" = having the prettiest, newest, shiniest technothingy sitting on your desk. :D

How thoughtless and money-grubbing of the computer companies to keep putting out newer ones. I mean, just when you've figured out how to use that, whatsitcalled, mouse thingy, BAM! You have to go spend more money and start all over!

HALARE!:p

I personally think that the industry in general has plateaued a bit since the 1990s.

Hi, sorry to sidetrack the Rick bashing, but I'm thinking of getting either a new MBP or MB (when they're released) and was wondering if anyone knows whether Apple has a tendency to lower prices after the holiday season? I'm not desperate for a computer in the next few weeks, so should I wait to see if there's a price drop in, say, January? Also, I'm a student, so will there be good deals around the beginning of the semester? (And by good deals, I mean something other than a 1gig ipod). Thanks.

-Alex

You may have been looking at a late MacBook Pro with 135º opening already added. 135º is HALF-WAY between vertical and horizontal. 45º above the desk. Go back and look again. If the new one isn't 135º go tell the genius bar.So if you get one that doesn't open half-way between vertical and horizontal, you better call AppleCare and ask for a repair.

I don't think it's clear yet if the C2D User Guide is general for the 15" and 17" models, or specific for the 17". Although the title references both sizes, the content of the pdf specifically refers to the 17" model, and furthermore lists features that only the 17" model has (e.g., 3 USB ports).

I think it's hasty to tell another user to go call AppleCare to ask for a "repair." For all we know, maybe the new 17" MBP does indeed open up to 135° (fingers crossed).
