What are the scenarios exactly where someone needs their laptop to extend that far back? Like if you have a large group of people around a table or something and they are all standing over it to look at the screen?

Laying on a couch in a comfortable postion. What do you use a desk or something?

Thank you. This means the 15" does not extend back as far as the 17" does. Another reason to love the 17" model.

But we also have a descrepancy between the report that it is only 120º vs. 130º. Did you mean 30º past vertical 90 - total 120º? or 40º past vertical 90º - almost half way to flat - total 130º?

135º is pretty obvious. It almost lookis flat even though there's still another 45º beyond to get to flat.

Um, Multimedia, why do you care? Do you have one of these machines or one of the older ones? Are you planning to buy one of the new ones? What possible difference does it make if one extends a little further back than the other?

ETA: OK, so it's important if someone is using their laptop while lying down on a sofa. I don't use my machine that way, so for me it's not important if the lid tilts back x amount or y amount.....

To me the far more significant information in this thread is about the vent holes....more vent holes means that the machine can blow out more heat and not get as hot. Now, THAT's important!

zadillo: I have a thinkpad that folds all the way down. You don't need it in practice at all, but it is very nice to know that if you accidentally hit it or do something stupid it won't break just from extending the screen. It has no true use other than that.

Yeah it does, I can't be the only person that uses laptops on couches/in bed.

I ordred a new MBP and this will be my first mac laptop. This is one of the things I will miss about PC laptops (that and the effing right mouse button).

Thanks For The Complements

I care because the 120º angle was one of the biggest complaints about the Rev A MacBook Pro. I am a consultant so my clients ask me about stuff like this. The 135º angel is essential for bed/couch/prone use. Try using one that won't go that far back while you are lying down with the keyboard on your beautiful thighs. Yes I have one that does 135º and it's only 15".

I was first to post both pictures of Rev A 73 Teeny Tiny Itsy Bitsy Barely Big Enough For Anything To Get Through Much Less A Lot Of Hot Air "holes" legacy from the PowerBook G4 design vs. the radically new Rev B 6 Giant Holes Vent design.

Question is: Why did Apple engineering not get that vent design right in the first place? The former is a JOKE and ABSURD. A Third Grader could have designed better. That 73 "hole" design never should have been allowed to reach production. No wonder they had heat problems up the wazoo. There was no way for any significant amount of air to get out of the dog gone insides.

I think that the new cooling design is probably the #1 reason to get rid of any Core Duo MacBook Pro ASAP and buy a C2D to replace it.

I see the MacBook suffers a similar multi slotted poor vent design as the Rev A MBP and hope to see this new large hole vent design in the new C2D MacBook as well.

he cares for the same reason i care - because god is in the details.

I'm just curious because while Multimedia seems to participate actively in some threads I'm not really sure of exactly what Macs he is using and why his fervor in some threads....

The elegant simplicity of any Mac, whether it be the Mac Pro, the iMac, the Mac Mini, the MacBook Pro, or the MacBook, far exceeds anything produced in the Windows-based PC world..... I certainly agree with this or I wouldn't be sitting here with four beautiful Macs living in my household!

Finally got my base glossy MBP and all I can say is...WOW!!! This is my first Mac laptop and I am very, very happy right now. Even saved $200 with the student discount.

For you guys in the Toronto area, I got mine from the Yorkdale Apple Store and I believe they still have the glossy ones which were not readily available. The guys at this store were very helpful. They even let me open it before taking it home to check for any defects and dead pixels. They offered to exchange it right off the bat if I wasn't satisfied without slapping the re-stock fee. They said they'd do this because of my experiences before. I told 'em I was unlucky with LCD screens and always had dead pixels the first time I turn them on. Needless to say, the MBP I got is perfect, no dead pixies whatsoever (tested it again at home by wathcing a DVD and examining the screen with purely a black background)...oh man...I'll stop now and enjoy my Core 2 Duo MBP!

Thanks again guys for your help.

I live in toronto too, and I have a feeling I should have bought at the Apple store, but I had to go through Carbon Computing (Queen St. East) because I have a business account there. They still haven't told me when it's coming (2.33 w/ 160 gb)

Well... I finally got it! I picked up a stock 2.16 C2D MBP from the Chandler, AZ Apple store. It IS a glossy model - they only had ONE in stock :) This thing is AWESOME... my first MAC :D So, what do you guys want to know??

You can right-click on a Mighty Mouse or you can use any other mouse and right-click with it, too....

Obviously I know that... but most of the time I use a laptop I use the trackpad, I don't know about most people. Point is Apple should have really put two buttons on the trackpad - two buttons is a good thing and they have realized that to an extent. I'm still getting a MBP though, I'll live with the two-finger-click thing.

Leopard has a feature where you place two fingers on the trackpad and then click which produces a right click.

Question is: Why did Apple engineering not get that vent design right in the first place?

I bought my MBP in the second go-around after they'd done a gentle speed bump and such....I never use it (or my Powerbook) in a prone position so for me this is not a crucial issue. When I'm on the computer, regardless of which one it is, I'm usually sitting upright. That's me. I'm not much for lying around on sofas, never have been.

As for the vent design, I quite agree that this is something very necessary! My MBP does run rather hot and I know that people who have the first-run MBPs that came out after the January 2006 announcement have had even hotter machines. This is a welcome improvement, increasing the number of vents and more importantly, widening them..... I don't think either you or I is ever going to have an answer to your question as to why Apple Engineering didn't get this right in the first place.

So.....which Apple machines do you actually use in daily life? You mention being "a consultant," but upon what actual experience with various Macs do you base your comments? Theories and conjectures are one thing, but actual real-life, day-to-day experience with a given computer or several computers is what really adds validation to someone's posts. For instance, as someone who switched a year ago, I've had experience with the Rev B PPC iMac, the PPC G4 15" PB, the 15" MBP and the Mac Pro.....so I would like to think that anything I offered would be useful and good information based upon my solid experience with any of these machines. Ask me about a G5 Quad and I really don't know, as I have never worked with one, or a G4 iBook, as I've never worked with one of those, either. I can't offer a good comparison between the iBook and the MacBook, never having used either machine.

Multimedia, just curious as to where you are coming from....

Type Your Next Post Lying Down

Take it to the couch and lie down horizontally. Then bend your knees a little and place it on your thighs. Can you extend the screen back far enough to see it well while you type your next post in that position?

Oh....sorry! I immediately plugged a mouse into my PB and then later my MBP so haven't really worked all that much with the trackpad, as I just don't like them. That's right, though, with the trackpad there is no right-click, left-click mechanism readily available or obvious.

I noticed that Apple updated the first MacBook Pro gallery picture, it's now an -a revision and sports grey I/O ports, probably a prototype that was photographed.

See the attached pictures to see yourself. I saved the first picture the day the page was updated.

Well, it's not as though there were no other options for positioning one's body!!! I really do not think that this is a major deal. Sorry if you do....

I Don't See Anyone Else Here Writing Their Resumé For All To Read

Multimedia, just curious as to where you are coming from....
I'm charter Mac user, User Group Leader and Mac consultant since February 1984 at USC. Have used many different models over the years. Recently, since 1999, been though a G3 PowerMac, two G4 Cubes and five G5 PowerMacs including the current G5 Quad as well as the 2GHz Dual Core G5 I got at Fry's in August for $864.26. Am buying the 8-Core Mac Pro two weeks from Tuesday. Will be buying the C2D MacBook or MBP next Spring if not in January. Currently mobile with orginal 15" 1.25GHz PowerBook G4 that extends back 135º for prone use which I have needed and used that way many times. I teach Macs and OS X to Seniors at the Senior Community Center here in Santa Cruz CA - about 35 miles from Cupertino.

How do you get to be a Demi-Goddess after only 1 year when I've been contributing here for many years?

Well, I think you may have at least 2 fingers. Read about two fingers for right click :)

Well then why did so many members here complain about it?

It IS A MAJOR DEAL. Deal with it.

Shodowx? Can you type and see comfortably lying down?

1 - how does in feel on your lap after some normal usage?

2 - Is the keyboard hot when you max out your CPU?

3 - And what's the lid like when closing? does it fit better or is it too loose? any warping?

mm... glossy... pictures please!

Thanks, Multimedia! This is helpful in understanding where you're coming from and where you're heading and all points in between! :) So from this I am gathering that you've not had actual daily in-home or in-office experience with the recent or current models, ie: the MacBook, the MBP or the Mac Pro.....?
