so did anyone confirm if 160GB HDDs are PMR drives?
Also, will I really see a big difference over the stock 120?? I am not at all interested in the extra 40GB but would definitely consider it if I get a PMR and if it performs way better than the stock one...

thanks,
pal :)

The fujitsu site says that the 160 is PMR, while the 100, 120 are LMR. Also tests show that 160 performs better because the data is packed more densely, and therefore you get more read on each revolution.

Aren't All 2.5" 160GB HDs Seagate PMRs?

I am pretty sure there are no linear 2.5" 160GB HDs on the market are there? Aren't they all Seagate PMR?

nope, it is not. look at the dot to the right of the iSight, the new C2D machines do not have them. she must be trying to pull a fast one. on top of which they were not even announced a week ago, nevermind shipped.

edit: beaten by pal. curses! meddlesome kids! :)

The dot to the right is the indicator light. The pinhole used to be to the left, and I can't see it in the pic.

Nevermind, my mistake. I had the wrong idea. You guys were right, the picture in the gallery on the Apple website shows no hole or indicator light.

Will you be installing BootCamp on it? If so, can you run ATiTool to see what the clockspeeds are, and also try and run 3DMark05 and 06? I've been trying to find a 2.16/128MB X1600 C2D MBP owner for a while who could actually runt his so we could see how it compares to the 2.33 GHz/256MB X1600 C2D MBP.

I'm definitely putting boot camp on....I'm one of those switchers who works on macs a lot (audio engineer), but has always been a PC user (lots of IT, programming, etc. background). I couldn't ever really justify owning both, but once the intel thing happened I was ready to switch. I'm curious to see which OS gets used more often 6 months from now....

I'll get it up and running and post results as soon as I can...

Mike

I'm sorry, do you have a core 2 duo MBP? I thought not. How are you different from him, when this is a thread to try and find out about a new computer that only a few people have?

If you look at my sig file you'll see what I've got....and no, I don't have a C2D MBP.....but I at least own and use a couple of the machines about which Multimedia writes, and unlike him, I actually do have day-to-day experience with them.

G5 iMac rev B pre-Intel, pre-inclusion of iSight camera, 2 GB RAM
G4 PB 1.67 GHz, 100 GB 7200 rpm HD, 2 GB RAM
MBP, 1.67 GHz, 100 GB 7200 rpm HD, 2 GB RAM
Mac Pro, 3 GHz, 2 TB, 7200 rpm HD, 8 GB RAM

I bought my MBP as a sort of test to see what the differences would be between a PPC machine and an intel-based one; at the time I was trying to decide about buying a Quad or waiting for the as-of-yet-unannounced Mac Pros. I decided to wait for the Mac Pro.

Point here being that if anyone asks questions about the particular machines/configurations I have here t home or experience with elsewhere, I have no problem in responding. If they ask about somethng about which I've no experience at all, I would feel that this is not appropriate for me to respond, and I don't.

Someone asks a specific question about the new MBP C2D? Well, I can't answer that from a perspective of having used one and I would say so.....however, I could, having the last generation of the MBP, point out some things which may or may not be relevant: similarities, differences. At least I've used a machine which is somewhat similar, although not identical. Looking back to the G4 PBs, you're talking a whole other situation. I can compare my MBP to a new MBP a whole lot more than I could my PB....and I can do it from the perspective of someone who has actually used the machines in daily activities. I don't see where Multimedia has quite the same perspective....

Awesome, thank you. If you do get a chance to install ATItool to see the clockspeed of the X1600 and run 3DMark05 and 06, that would be great. I've been dying to hear from someone with the base model about these things.

I have day to day experience with many different client's Macs plus my own and read here all the time. You have no advantge over me here on advice nor perspective and I resent your insinuation that you do.

how many of you guys are waiting for santa rosa features in the macbook pro? Do you think it's worth it to wait? How long do you think the c2d mbp will last, i'm buying it for college and i'm a CS major?

P.S. I can wait, but i'm really anxious so don't give me that if you need one now get one and if you can wait, wait.

Oh jesus, here we go again. Next tuesday anyone?

I just got mine today, 2.33ghz 15"

and shes georgious

i hate to say it, but so far my favorite thing is the scrolling trackpad, speeds up computer useing so much

Should be a way to set up WPA....I am pretty sure that this is what I used to set up my MBP a few months ago. What wireless setup are you using? I've got Linksys something-or-other; had to get it a few months ago to replace my old router which unexpectedly kinked out on me. Maybe your current router doesn't support WPA? Have you looked for an update at the manufacturer's site?

It was hidden... sort of. If you "create network," it only gives you WEP as an option. If you click on "other" under the WAP list, it allows you to select from a variety of security types... thanks!

Miss Behaving's A Faker

look at this pic closely, its a hole, not a light. in this pic, you can see it lit up.

and no, it IS to the right, even on the older models.

EDIT: konfabulation replied as i was posting. :)
She also says she had to add another gig of RAM for 2 which is also a false C2D since they all come with 2.

"Begbi, one week old. Purchased new from PowerMax, Portland, OR. 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, added another gig of RAM for 2. 120 GB, running 10.4.8. Ask me if it's sweeeeeeeeeeet. Amen, sista."

So she's a faker. I also see the hole now too. Thanks Shecky.
