So neooffice will work with my new mbp? Sorry, i don't even know what version or os it is? Tiger? eeeek!

You can try out OpenOffice, it's a free alternative to Microsoft Office.

There is a Mac specific port of OpenOffice called NeoOffice you can download:

http://www.neooffice.org/

But you might find that it is worth just buying Microsoft Office. Your mac should include a 30-day test drive.

Apple also makes a word processor called Pages, a trial of which you should also find on your Mac. You can buy it as part of iWork, which is $99 (or $50 academic I think).

MS Office is a good product. Word is rivaled by few other programs and Excel is alone at the top of the spreadsheet world.

Not to mention that MS Office is a good product. Word is rivaled by few other programs and Excel is alone at the top of the spreadsheet world.

Indeed. And aside from that, Microsoft's Mac Business Unit (which develops Office) is actually a real group of Mac developers that actually does work on developing original Mac software (rather than just copying the Windows Office). The last thing we want is for MS to go back to the days of Word 6.0 where everything was just ported.

eeeeeeeek... I might end up just paying for ms office 2004? I wonder if neooffice can be accessed by word from other computers. I might have a friend who has office for mac anyways, so maybe i can borrow his copy.

She also says she had to add another gig of RAM for 2 which is also a false C2D since they all come with 2.
I don't have any horse in this race but you're dead wrong....

ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB SDRAM

Another thing, about the degree of opening. Do you really want a machine that suffers from heat removal opening far enough to block the very vents that cool it?

After speding all that money on hardware you should be willing to also spend some on good software. MS Office is one of those must have apps. But there is a new version shipping with Leopard next Spring. So you can rationalize waiting for that.

Except that's the base model 15" model, and the one in the picture is supposed to be a 17" model.

NeoOffice can read and write MS Word documents, and you can also use OpenOffice on other computers as well.

I'd still pay for Office 2004..... the academic price is not bad at all (my local university store sells Office 2004 for $75). And Word 2004 especially is a pretty solid word processor.

I heard late Q2 like June.

I have OfficeXP from my windows days, I am using it with CrossOver until the new, UB version arrives and then I will buy.

Hmmm definately interesting, so Microsoft Office will come with Leopard for free? Will it be cheap to upgrade to Leopard Multimedia? Kinda sucks that I just bought this new notebook and a new os will be coming out in months. Any possible way they'll make it cheaper for students or something like that? Maybe I can afford to type my papers on my roomate's computer.

I have to agree with these guys. Office is great on Mac. The Macintosh Business Unit has done a good job with their software. Even if it is Microsoft they're done a great job with Office 2004. I hope to look forward to Office 2007.

What gave you the idea that Office will come with Leopard. You'll have to by both separately. One from Apple and one from Microsoft.

Sorry boys. I'm still new here and I don't know the rules. I won't make the same mistake again.
Just watch out next time. As much as we do "hate" Microsoft.

I brought up the angle issue on behalf of all who complained about it here all year long. Not for me. There were a TON of 120º complaints on this forum all year long. Now all those complaintants seem to have gone to bed.

This is definitely a case of no good deed going unpunished.

Okay! Sweet, i'll def look into that. Hopefully here at uga they offer something like that.

MS Office doesn't come with Mac OS X 10.5 for free. I think he meant that MS would be releasing a new version of Office for the Mac sometime in the Spring when Leopard comes out, but I don't think this is correct, as they said it isn't coming out for the Mac until the later half of 2007.

The Academic price of most Mac OS releases has been around $70, so it will be cheaper than full retail.

Also, the OS is just called Mac OS X 10.5 or Leopard. Apple doesn't make different versions of the consumer OS (i.e. "Leopard Multimedia")... it isn't like Vista and it's different versions (Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate, etc.).

lets recap, shall we?

ok, what else are we looking for specific information on?

-the manufacturer and part number of the 160GB hard drive
-confirmation on the angle of opening on the 15 and the 17
-idle + load temps of the 15 and the 17

what else?

.... MS Office is one of those must have apps.

:(

It's times like this I really regret leaving ClarisWorks to languish. Once upon a time the above sentiments were much easier to shoot down.

Given that I feel that Bill Gates and many of his minions belong in jail, I personally feel that it is ethically inappropriate ever to use Microsoft software. "Must have" or not, it is quite possible to get by nicely without it. And, actually, getting easier.
