:(

It's times like this I really regret leaving ClarisWorks to languish. Once upon a time the above sentiments were much easier to shoot down.

Given that I feel that Bill Gates and many of his minions belong in jail, I personally feel that it is ethically inappropriate ever to use Microsoft software. "Must have" or not, it is quite possible to get by nicely without it. And, actually, getting easier.
Hope for a better iWork! :D

MS Office 2007 Will Ship Spring 2007 Not Free With Leopard

Hmmm definately interesting, so Microsoft Office will come with Leopard for free? Will it be cheap to upgrade to Leopard Multimedia? Kinda sucks that I just bought this new notebook and a new os will be coming out in months. Any possible way they'll make it cheaper for students or something like that? Maybe I can afford to type my papers on my roomate's computer.
Not free with Leopard. At about the same time from Microsoft for sale. Leopard will only cost you $75 academic and it's still 6 months off. Will be way worth it.

If you are an engineering student then it is very difficult. You have to know and be able to use excel. It is expected in school and expected in the professional world.

Obviously I know that... but most of the time I use a laptop I use the trackpad, I don't know about most people. Point is Apple should have really put two buttons on the trackpad - two buttons is a good thing and they have realized that to an extent. I'm still getting a MBP though, I'll live with the two-finger-click thing.

I agree, there should be two buttons. The Apple one button is a religion taken one step too far.

It's a program that mimics windows calls in order to make regular M$ programs work in the OSX environment.

I'd say it works fairly well. It is in free beta form now, give it a try if you have any PC software you need to run.

There are a lot of kinks to work out but beats paying for Windows and Parallels.

People shouldn't complain about new technologies coming out and making theres "obsolete" in some...non existent way. What's the difference if they came out with a new one now, or a new one 2 years from now? YOU STILL HAVE THE SAME DARN COMPUTER!

Well, it would be nicer if prices slowly dropped over time until the next model comes out when the prices go up again. That way you could get the same value for money in an old model, as 24 hours later buying the new model and getting double the RAM and double the disk space for the same price.

It runs most business applications with a few kinks. Printing can be an issue sometimes. I've gotten Steam installed but I haven't been able to get CS: Source to work...yet.

OK, I'm going to call B.S. on this 120 degree issue, since I was wrong on the other...;) :D
I just got into bed with my nearly 10 year old Sony VAIO and with the screen at 90 degrees there are positions you can slightly elevate your legs and still see the screen, you can't be square to the screen, but that's what a decade of screaming about viewing angles fixed...and it was fixed in 1998! So the real complaint here is...as evidenced by the few-pages-back linked video, when sitting on the floor, with torso propped against the couch so that it is almost verticle, with legs at >45 degree angle to the floor, you cant get square to the MBP screen.
I can't do that with my 30 ACD either...get over it, buy a MB or a Dell or a tablet or a PDA... It's a professional machine not a toy.

Still Not MacIntel Until 8-Core Mac Pro Next Month

When I get my 8-core Mac Pro next month, I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip.

I have a copy of XP and a Parallels License.

What are the scenarios exactly where someone needs their laptop to extend that far back? Like if you have a large group of people around a table or something and they are all standing over it to look at the screen?

The taller you are (or the lower the laptop is relative to your eyes) the more the angle needs to be. When I sit on a couch at a hotel room and the laptop is on a coffee table a larger angle is needed than if it is right in my face at shoulder level. I prefer not to hunch over my laptop to get my eyes at the level of the screen when it is on a desk or table. (I am 6'3" which has an impact on the angle I would like). With my current tablet I actually lay the screen flat when on a plane and put the mouse behind the machine on the tray. That both raises the screen, and prevents the person ahead of me from crushing my laptop when they lean back. That of course would not be an option with a normal laptop.

Then there is no reason to get CrossOver. Everything will work better on Parallels. If you are worried about the RAM commitment in Parallels on a MacPro then it probably won't run well with CrossOver.

as a noob to the mac scene, I was wondering how much RAM you normally give to Parallels. There will be a few programs that I have to run Windows for as this is also a work machine. Specs are in the sig.

Another one would be DJs where the Mac is on their platform and wants to be folded back as far as possible so it can be seen while standing immediately above it.

Neh, I'm paranoid about Page Outs so I stick for 384 MB. Then again I killed so many services that it runs just fine for WMP and Winamp.

Windows will run with that little? Have you tried Vista yet? I'm running RC2 on my windows box and it's a RAM/processor whore.

You can run Windows XP with 128 MB of RAM. (Or less...)

I just need to use WMP for some picky radio stations. I've killed services galore on my VM so I have it set to 128 MB. Lightning fast though!

Now you're talking specific application which I'm sure there are plenty of aftermarket opportunities to remedy. A hooker can't ceiling mount her MBP flat so she can edit for Lucas and pay the rent simultaneously....:D

Is this really even an issue anymore now that desktop macs ship with a Mighty Mouse and the notebooks have the two-fingers-and-click built in?
