FCP UB will be my #1 application on a 17" 2.33/3GB/?which drive?

So you think this puppy will capture an HDV feed just fine? You have already tried editing with the internal 200 and it feels fast?

I don't know about HDV....might want to go for the 160. But yeah, editing feels GREAT.

Our lappies may have been roomies! I had the exact same estimated/actual dates for shipping/delivery - mine's "out for delivery" now, although the FedEx website also says estimated delivery is 11/2.

I'm off today, and will be obsessively waiting by the door, ready to snatch my precious from the FedEx dude!

:D

quickest way to get 17incher?

I placed my order for the stock 17" machine on the 24th; order status shows Nov 7th ship date/Nov 13th delivery (though I upgraded to overnight delivery).

Do you think I'll get a machine faster from one of the three local Apple stores (we twin citians are lucky!), or should I just wait for the delivery direct from Apple?

i am betting on it being in the apple stores quicker than shipping - i am getting a stock 17" and i am on the top of the list at my local store. my hope is that they are in by this friday (Nov 3rd) but i would be willing to bet they will be in no later than middle of next week (nov 8th)

Do you think that the discrepancy is really the result of the difference in system memory, or the amount of video memory?

I'm currently putting together an order for a 15-incher (my first Mac!), and am trying to decide what to spec. I'd like to keep the cost down, but I'd like to be able to do some gaming on this machine as well, so I'm willing to spend the extra cash on the 2.33GHz / 256 MB VRAM model if it makes sense. (I'll be running 2GB of memory regardless of which base configuration I choose.)

Also, has there been any determination as to whether the 160 GB drive is worth the extra money, in terms of performance? The charts at Tom's Hardware seem to be somewhat mixed, with the Hitachi doing well in most of the tests, but not so well in the "Workstation I/O" benchmark.

I'm pretty sure the wide discrpenacy in this case is from system memory. As I said, from the early benchmarks we've seen so far, the 2.33 GHz 256MBVRAM C2D MBP's seem to get close to 4000 with stock drivers, and other people who have upgraded their base models with 2GB of RAM have gotten around 3800 with stock drivers. So I would attribute the 3600 with a base model with 1GB of memory to the system memory difference. The other points seem to represent the difference between the 128 and 256 X1600's.

I don't see how you can characterize the new cooling vents on the back as "very minor". There is nothing "minor" about going from 73 teeny tiney itsy bitsy patheticly small holes to 6 Gigantic Vent Ports so big you can see the logic board inside.

One glance back there and you know immediately that anyone hanging on to one of those old mobile Macs with all the pin sized holes is hanging on to a really sad past chapter in the history of mobile computing. It's so radically different back there that the difference in performance is guaranteed to be so much better with the new design - enough difference to never want anything to do with a mobile Mac containing the former design.

Combined with the new minimum fan speed of 2k RPM up from 1k RPM, the new C2D MacBook Pros are NEVER going to get hot.

Maybe you need to look again to get how radically superior the new vent design is:

1. Top is the old 73 pin size hole system that makes it almost impossible for ANY air to escape from the HOT interior - combined with the too slow 1k RPM minimum fan speed. :(

2. Next is the new 6 Wide Thick Air Vents that make it almost impossible for ANY hot air to remain inside long enough for the system to get anything more than luke warm - combined with the new 2k RPM minimum fan speed. :)

3. Wide shot of the new vents. :)
4. Close up of a few vents where you can see the logic board inside they are SO BIG. :)

You just schooled me haha. Thanks for the details on the new system. Seems like it has been helping a good deal with the heat problems.

Mine's not out for delivery yet, but it has finally made it here to my city :)

Here's to hoping it gets delivered today ;) (It should; it's only 8:15AM here atm).

FWIW, that's what I thought about the 15" Glossy. I called both local stores 5 min after they opened the Tuesday it was announced to put myself on the list. So far I have heard nothing while people that ordered theirs have them already. At this point, maybe store would be quicker but if I had it to do over I'd order online. At least that way you get a tracking number and know when to expect it. Beats calling a store everyday just to be told "nope, still not in..."

i am also not willing to let my $3000 laptop sit on the stoop of my apartment waiting for me to get home either. id rather get it in-store.

at the moment as far as the 17" goes i have not heard of anyone having a delivery date before the 7th - most sound like the 14th or so.

The hard drives in the new MBPs cannot be upgraded manually.

They have a new (non-removeable) noise dampener disc attached to the top and only apple currently make these configurations.

Apple Finally Shipped!

However, they've been lying to me...

Apple told me that my MBP was being assembled/shipped from California...
and the reason for the delay was because of US Customs in California...

But now that I've got a tracking number, I see that it is infact coming from Shanghai, China...

It's just a little disheartening that they persistantly lied to me for a few days...

Anyways - Here's my order...

2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-2x1GB
160GB Serial ATA Drive@5400rpm
SuperDrive 6X
15" Glossy Widescreen Display
BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS
Country Kit

I still have no Estimated Delivery date.... which seems odd.

Nevertheless, I can't wait to get my hands on it :D

Cheers!

I'm really hoping for more information on this. First off, if you did remove the HD and put your own in, without this noise dampener disc, would it really not work, or would it just not have the noise dampening or whatever?

I have to think that there's going to be a third party solution for this, for people who do plan on swapping out the HD at a later date.

Well, ive been lurking in this thread since the C2D Got released. I bought my first apple laptop on the 30th. and woke up this morning to find out it shipped! Now to see if it will get here by Friday so i have all weekend to play with it:

TYC - How did you find out it was shipped, from calling? or did you receive an email or just checked the status online?

Just wondering as I'm eagerly anticipating notification when mine ships..

Why would it go through US Customs if it was being built in California?

mine finally got to LA, then my local fedex office.

11/01/06 07:28 am Arrived At Fedex Destination Location Marina Del Rey, CA

hope it gets on a truck for delivery today.

Hey! Mine was in the same spot yesterday - - it was received after the cutoff at 6:37 on the 31st...
My FedEx hasn't updated yet, but iSnoop says it left the FedEx ramp at 2:17 PM on 11/01 (gotta be shanghai time) -
So, my prediction is that you'll see it sitting there all day today - but later tonight (if you are up late) with iSnoop you'll see that it leaves the FedEx ramp at around 2:15 PM on 11/02.
Thats my guess.... hopefully I'll get a FedEx update soon that says it landed in Alaska..... but that may not happen until later tonight...

Why would it go through US Customs if it was being built in California?

Well, if I remember correctly he also once said it would have to travel something like 1100 miles north (1108 I think) from CA to get to him...which should put him somewhere around British Columbia if I'm not mistaken.

I follow this thread way too closely. Damn I need my MBP to just get here already!

Edit:
TYC said:
It still has to travel north 1081 mi from California to where I am...
(yes my MBP is coming from Cali instead of China)

Just did a search...I had all the right numbers, just slightly out of order:) Still puts him in Canada.

Get wireless keyboard, mouse, wireless networking. Most people won't need a monitor with the 17" screen. That just leaves the power cable.

Nice idea but wireless networks aren't available at work due to security concerns (plus they're slow) and I'll still be using 2 screens even with a 17" laptop (one for OS X and one for XP). I've bought a wireless Mighty Mouse with the laptop but the keyboard will be one of Apple's wired variety. I just find it strange that just about every other laptop manufacturer makes a docking station so why doesn't Apple?

Question: When did Apple take the money from your bank accounts? Was is straight away? I'm awaiting my 17" to be shipped and I'm guessing that if money was to leave my bank account it would be a good sign.

extremely frusterated!!

I ordered my MBP 15.4/160GB/2GB RAM notebook at 6:00 A.M. on Tuesday morning (10/24/06). Due to the fact that I only had access to my debit card and given its $1000.00 dollar a day limit I opted to wire transfer to Apple directly. They failed to mention to me that once you change your payment option your order is completely re-hashed. I should've had my computer sent out yesterday and now I'm looking at the 9th for a possible delivery date. This totally sucks, I'm bummed, especially due to the fact that they didn't mention this information to me (I would've tried to go through another person with a different Credit Card if I knew!!). All I'm seeing at the moment on my order status screen is "MBP Cancelled" and no new order as of yet. I hope they set up the new order as they said they would quickly.

uh.................................................
