I'm minutes away from pulling the trigger on this. However a recent MacFixit article has given me pause. I waited for the Merom MBPs for some time because of the supposed 64 bit computing. But according to the article, even though my processor is now capable of 64 bit computing, the Intel 945 chipset is still 32 bit! Is this right? So that means that even with Jaguar's 64 bit goodness throughout, I'll still be able to only do 32 bit computing? Say it aint so. Say it aint so. :(

The processor is 64 bit capable, but the chipset only lets you address up to 3.2 GB of physical ram. You could have a single process with 3GB of virtual ram or even more. You could address up to 128GB of virtual ram but the paging would kill you. This revision is 50% more ram than the last model, and the Santa Rosa chip set will hopefully raise it again by at least 1GB or more if we are luck. An 8GB laptop would be quite a site (for about 2hrs).

I got mine, and so far I'm extremely happy. Shipped one day early, and arrived two days early!

Just bumping my question since it has been unnoticed

Any advice would be appreciated please:

One question I have is about the HD. I got the mid model, which comes with the 120 GB HD. Is there a difference between the stock model and the 160 GB HD, other than the space? The reason I ask is because I just placed the order, so I still could change it to have the bigger HD. But at this point I don't anticipate needing the extra space, is more a matter of having a quieter, more efficient and less power hungry machine, assuming there were differences.

Thanks

Get Perpendicular Song Is Rockin' !!

The 120MB disk is LMR while the 160 is PMR. The PMR drives have a higher bit density which translates to higher transfer rates. I am not sure bit it may also have faster seek times and a larger buffer.
Nope. Some 120's are Hitachi Super-Perpendicular as well. 120's are a crap shoot.
I feel as if my post got buried so I'll repost this again because this may be newsworthy:

I noticed a few of those with the new C2D macbook pro's who ordered a 120gb HD got a Fujitsu LMR drive.

My notebook, a stock 15" (Glossy) 2.33 C2D with a 120gb HD was a Hitachi.
Specific Model: HTS541612J9SA00
A google search returned this as the Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 a PMR HDD that comes in a variety of flavors (40, 60, 80, 120, 160).

Now, did I just luck out getting a PMR drive? It seems as if Apple is using two different brands of HDDs for their 120gb flavor. The Fujitsus are the older LMR drives, but these Hitachis use the new PMR technology.
You lucked out. Much better to have PMR 120 than linear Fujitsu.

Waiting for those with 200's to report all are Toshiba Perpendicular or not.

PS: I bought my notebook yesterday at the Wellington Apple Store in Wellington, FL. It was their only 15" glossy 2.33 C2D MBP.

I received my new C2D macbook pro today! It is absolutely silient (except when it comes out of sleep. The optical drive spins slightly.) Its been on for a couple of hours now and it's not very warm at all. My 12" PB seems to get warmer. Istatnano doesn't seem to read the internal temp. What program can I use?

This is blazing fast (I have 2gb of memory). I absolutely love this thing. If you have any questions feel free to ask!!

interesting...

I was just about to change my order frmo the stock 120 to the upgraded 160, but now this news just in.

Could there be a relationship here, like glossy screens get one brand, and matte get the other? not that it is required, but just an inventory management and manufacturing plants location thing.

Wow that hard drive commercial was hilarious, reminds me of that old cartoon how a bill becomes a law. Are those types of hard drives available yet? If not when?

Help! Glitch with setup assistant

Good new: it's here! :D

Bad news: the setup assistant didn't work properly. :(

It took about 1:45 to transfer everything from my PowerBook G4. But at the end, it complained that one file could not be read. When I finished the setup, nothing from my home directory was on the new machine. I suppose that the fact that it made me set up a new account should have been a clue.

Anyway, now I want to re-run that part of the setup, having deleted the offending file on the Powerbook. But where is the setup assistant? Searching for it only yields an Airport Setup Assistant.

Basically, I'd like to avoid reinstalling and starting from scratch. Apart from the reinstall time, I've already copied over all my applications, and everything that wasn't in my home directory. But manually copying my home directory also doesn't seem like the right approach -- surely I can't just blast over the new Library diretory?

Any advice? Thanks.

Oh -- and I already have 2 nits about the new machine. :( First, the keyboard sucks. It looks the same as the one on my 17", first-gen aluminum G4 PowerBook. But the feel is very different, chicklety. And the keys are actually a little bit uneven!

Second, the "MacBook Pro" logo at the base if the screen is reflective, and distracting. I'm wearing a light-colored shirt, and whenever I move a little bit, even moving my fingers to type, there's a distracting reflection. This may get so annoying that I have to remove it, or somehow make it nonreflective.

Utilities Folder in Applications "Migration Assistant" is the name they give it. Don't ask me why 'cause I have no clue. Found it by using the "Mac Help" from the finder Help menu and searching for "where is setup assistant" did you think of doing that? :)

This was one of the results from that search:

Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ  isn't it?

Call Applecare and tell tehm you want a new keyboard installed. You got a bad unit. Don't take no for an answer and ask for a supervisor if they give you any lip.

Cover it with a piece of Post-It Note cut to that size.

Thanks! No, it didn't occur to me to use Mac Help, which I rarely find useful. As a rule, it tell you everything that is obvious, and nothing about what to do when something is not working right. But I figured asking here would likely get quick results. :) As it happens, I got the answer faster by googling anyway; I'm now re-attemping to copy my old home directly.

About the keyboard, yeah, if the touch has changed then so be it, maybe I will get used to it, but some of the keys are definitely uneven. I will get this addressed if at all possible.

About the reflective logo... ah, I don't think a Post-It is really the target aesthetic I had in mind!

Well, ive been lurking in this thread since the C2D Got released. I bought my first apple laptop on the 30th. and woke up this morning to find out it shipped! Now to see if it will get here by Friday so i have all weekend to play with it:

Nov 1, 2006 6:38 PM
Picked up
SHANGHAI CN
Package received after FedEx cutoff

6:38 PM
Left origin
SHANGHAI CN
6:20 PM
Package data transmitted to FedEx

Its the IP Direct Distribution as the Service type. Hopefully it will make it here the same time my ram upgrade for it will :D

My soon to be new laptop:
C2D MBP: 2.16ghz/2GB Ram/160gb HD/Matte display

Now i need to come up with a new name for it!

Man am i jealous - i ordered mine on the 30th (6am CA time) and it is still saying a ship date of Nov 8 !!!
Maybe the difference is that i am getting the 2.33/3GB/160GB HD/matte... ?

I haven't seen anyone post that they have recieved a 15/2.33/3GB/160HD/matte machine, although its possible to have missed something along the way with a thread 70+ pages long. Mine still shows on or before Nov 3rd ordered the 25th morning, I did manage to get Apple to upgrade me to 2 day shipping for free though. :D

Is there a way to tell which 120 GB HD is in a stock 15" MBP before you buy it? If there is PMR 120 GB drive for a 15", I would prefer to get the one with that drive over the old LMR 120 GB HD. Does it show on the box?
