Vents

I noticed today on my 15" C2D MBP that the 6 wide vents aren't wide open. There are grills inside the openings - recessed a bit.

Tried to get a pic of it - its a bit hard to see but I hope you get the idea

I Think The Adapter Works Great

Hey Multimedia (or anyone else) how is the quality on the DVI to S Vid converter? I have a VJ'ing gig where image quality is important and I have to tie into a Edirol mixer with S video.

I generally don't like the image quality on cheaper (sub $500) scan converters, anyone know of a good solution in that range?
Don't know for sure but should be great.

Just Getting Excited About Hitachi "Super-Perpendicular" Hype

Man, way to ruin peoples parade. "Sorry. Linear."
And resale value won't be affected, I guarantee most people won't care what brand HD is in your MBP, just size.
And sorry for saying, but I bet the performance isn't all that different either, just some people being caught up in what they percieve to be big news.

Be happy with whatever drive you got, Apple wouldn't sell it if it was as ****** as Multimedia is trying to portray it. Not that I understand why he makes such a fuzz about it anyway..
Yeah I agree. Sorry to be a wet blanket. Super-Perpendicular sounds so cool I got caught up in the Hitachi hype. Have you seen and listened to the "Get Perpendicular" Music Video Yet?

But performance may be better with a Super-Perpendicular and you may be able to "sell" if for more by mentioning that it has a Hitachi Super-Perpendicular drive inside. It's definietly a SELLING FEATURE.

Purchased mine in Irvine

I live in West LA and drove down to the Irvine store on Tuesday, where a guy (thanks Brian!) was holding a 2.33/glossy for me.

It's the Hitachi, and they had only received 2 at the time. Weird shipments they've been getting.

Anyhow, first mac and it's been great. Now I'm just having fun networking my Vista machine to this sucka. It worked fine for a little while, now I can't get iTunes to share anymore.

As a side note, my MBP has been driving my dell 24" (can't remember the model, it was the first generation though) perfectly.

I just checked out C2D MBP 15" (256 MB GPU) model at the Apple Store. I checked out various apps installed on that store model to test out how fast it can run those programs. It passed my test and I just picked up a C2D MBP 15" stock model (2.33 Mhz/256 MB GPU). I considered BTO option to get a 160 GB HD; but, I felt safer to go with the stock just in case something goes wrong during the warranty period.
I also purchased Aperture with this machine.

Enjoy Having Cutting Edge New Tech

Do you actually know the performence differences?
I'm not a lab. I read the hype on the Hitachi site and believe it. I'm a sucker for new tech advancements and prefer to own them over older tech. :)

The Hitachi 5K160 Super-Perpendicular line looks very exciting to me. Sorry if you don't like my enthusiasm for new engineering accomplishments here in Silicon Valley. Hitachi is based here in San Jose. Some of those drives are also manufactured here in San Jose.

"SAN JOSE, Calif. – Nov. 1, 2006 – Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi) has successfully ramped its perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) manufacturing to high volume, announcing, today, delivery of the one millionth PMR hard drive after only six months of regular production. Customer acceptance and accelerated product qualifications are also indicative of the success of Hitachi's PMR program. With strong customer demand and the stability of the technology at high volume, Hitachi expects to produce more than four million PMR hard drives by the end of 2006.

Hitachi began manufacturing PMR-based products in May of this year when the company debuted the Travelstar 5K160 -- the most reliable and technically-advanced 2.5-inch hard drive on the market. That reliability claim has borne out as Hitachi achieved high volume more quickly than with any other 2.5-inch product to date -- a considerable achievement given PMR is a relatively nascent technology when compared to existing longitudinal magnetic recording technology, which has been in use in hard drives for half a century. PMR production will represent roughly 35 percent of Hitachi's fourth quarter 2.5-inch hard drive output. Hitachi expects to fully transition its 2.5-inch product line to PMR by the end of 2007."

In other words, the end of 2.5" longitudinal magnetic recording technology hard drives is at hand and will be over by 2008.

BTW I never said the LMR drives are ****** as Reach tried to put words in my mouth. Only that they are perhaps more prone to data loss and maybe a bit slower than PMR drives.

Cheers for any help!!

Ollie Cromwell.

P.S This is my first post: Couldn't be part of the stalking crowd any longer, havent had a mac for the past couple of years since the tragic death of my Pismo. Work unfortunately supplied Dell machines for me so I could not justify the expense to either myself or my wife...

I just want you to know that I'm in nearly the exact same situation since my company supplied me with this rotten D510 Dell POS, I've been patiently waiting for this release to order a new laptop to replace my Lombard, dead these last two years. Do you know if we can load OS 9 on these to manage our old full hard drives we've saved from the dead laptops? I've got the sled and hard drive all put together just waiting for the day my laptop is delivered.

Hi guys,

I've received my MBP C2D 2.33 GHz, 160 Gb / Glossy an hour ago. I'm at work now (had to skip work for 1 hour to wait for the delivery :p).

It's been fun!!!

This is what the Macbook Pro Rev.A should have been

Checked out the MBP 2 at the Apple Store on 5th Ave today. Fit and finish seemed markedly improved with, believe it or not, a straight screen bezel! Also, and this I think is the most important, the new MBP runs cool compared to previous versions. They still had a few of the old ones there and there was a significant difference. The new one is cooler than my macbook! So heat is no longer an issue at all.

The only thing I'd wish for now is a LCD that can tilt back more - I find that to be a basic design flaw, especially given the rather limited viewing angle of the display. Glossy screen seems better in terms of viewing angle though.

dual link DVI support

Does anyone know what "dual link DVI support" means? I am assuming that it does not mean you can hook up two external monitors, however I did read a post on here (sorry can't find it now; this thread is HUGE!) about a person saying that s/he needed to use 2 monitors. I don't know if they meant two external monitors, or the built in LCD + an external. I would love to know what monitor config options are available (does it support video mirroring, how many displays can you drag windows across, etc).

I am thinking about purchasing the 15" (non-glossy) 2.16 with 2GB of RAM and the 160GB hard drive. The only problem is after I pay for the RAM and HD upgrade, I don't think I will be able to afford the AppleCare Warranty. Is there any benefit to purchasing it right away? I know I can still upgrade the warranty before the first year expires, but some people on here were saying it's better to get it right away as you get better service/support? Does anyone know for sure if this is true?

Thanks, Rob

I can verify that it does support mirroring

Mirroring does work. I have not tested it with two external monitors, only one. But the LCD on the MBP and my monitor can be mirrored if I set it to that.

Dual Link DVI Supports 2560x1600 30" Monitors • AppleCare Can Wait

Just get the AppleCare within the first year or sooner if you need a repair beyond the first 90 days. Service is the same 'til then.

Dual Link simply means it can drive the big 30" monitors. Dell sells them for as little as $1279 now. So they are getting very affordable. IOW your MBP will drive any monitor you want to both spanning and mirroring. There's only one monitor port for one external monitor, projector, analog or digital television Rob. So using two means including the MBP screen - one reason the 17" model is more attractive in that case.

Congrats on your new precious! I just received mine, same specs as yours :)D ), and couldn't be more thrilled by what I've seen in this short time! Incredibly bright, flawless screen (with essentially no glare at all, at any viewing angle, with lighting at any position, unless the screen is "off!"), unbelievably fast, cool-running, absolutely quiet ..... it's the most awesome computer, of any brand, I've ever had! :)

I had a brief time of panic, when I had to run an errand, expecting FedEx to come 3 hours later - I had left a "presignature" for FedEx, but they arrived while I was gone, left a note saying they'd "try again tomorrow"   I couldn't believe it! I called FedEx 800-number, and they had the driver return to my home and deliver it (I'm at work tomorrow, and wouldn't be able to sign for it until Friday otherwise!) - I gave the driver a damned nice tip, and my eternal gratitude!

Hope we'll both stay thrilled with these lil' speed demons! Congrats, and good Mac-luck!

Another Hitachi Winner In Davis CA

I got the Hitachi and I think it's the PMR one: Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00. I checked hitachi's website here and the model number matches up: http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/products/Travelstar_5K160
Congrats. Yes all the Hitachi are 5K160 PMR. Only the Fujitsu are LMR. In what config?

NOTE: The "160" in 5K160 does not refer to the drive's size. The whole line of Super-Perpendicular Hitichi's is known as the Travelstar 5K160 line. available in sizes as small as 40GB up to 160GB.

Mine is exactly the same as yours (mine is shipping to just near St Albans).

I received the SMS at 11:39am this morning. Apple Care has a tracking number, but the actual MBP will be merged in transit, and is currently set to be delivered on the 13th, ho hum.

Hopefully they get their act together though and it arrives a lot sooner than that :D

Grr - my status still hasnt moved since last week

Incidentally how/where do you put your mobile number in to get an sms when it ships? dont remember seeing this option?

Toshiba 200GB/4200rpm HDD I got is MK2035GSS

Tat you are assuming you told us you have a Toshiba 200 before casually mentioning it in this new obscure non-specific model number post. As far as I know you did not.

What Model Number PLEASE????

I'm not assuming but I did post it on the day I got my MBP. I guess it was buried in the middle of shipping/tracking issue. Here is the quote:

Hi, I received my new MBP (2.33/2G/200GB/matte) this morning.
It was a bit cold since it came via AK :p

Anyway, as some of you already guess, system profiler says my 200gig disk is "TOSHIBA MK2035GSS," which is PMR.
I'm not sure if Apple also uses Fujutsu's 200gig disks.

Anyway, here is the result of XBench, with comparison to MBP-2.33/2G/120G
http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=199097&doc2=198214

Not that bad as I was worried. Actually very good instead!
If Apple uses two different 200G disks, then I'm lucky :)

Is there really a significant different in performance between PMR and LMR disks?

i remember someone asking me what kind of hard drive would come in my 160GB MBP.

here it is:
Capacity: 149.05 GB (Formatted HFS+)
Model: Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00

II'm a sucker for new tech advancements and prefer to own them over older tech. :)

The Hitachi 5K160 Super-Perpendicular line looks very exciting to me.

The Super-Perpendicular drives are crap compared to the Super-Duper-Perpendicular drives.
