You could address up to 128GB of virtual ram but the paging would kill you.

It wouldn't necessarily "kill you". Apps can memory map large disk files and access them randomly in memory. It could actually be very efficient. Depends on the app.

Agreed. If you are very careful about locality you can access large virtual memory without undue paging. In most systems the page fault I/O rate is higher than that of normal file I/O. So long as you are only reading it can work quite well. If you have modified pages however the pagefile fills up and it kills you.

Mostly I was trying to separate the idea of physical memory addressing from virtual memory addressing and computation in 32 vs. 64 bit systems. But, I could have been more precise.

My MBP C2D screen died after 10 minutes!

I ordered 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, matte screen machine on the day the new MBPs were announced. My ETA from FedEx for standard shipping was Nov. 3, here in Canada, so I was pleased when it arrived today, two days early.

I unpacked it and connected to my local Ethernet network to try it out. I got as far as the Apple registration process, about ten minutes in, when the screen went black as if a screensaver had kicked in. After trying everything listed on the Apple Support page for starting up reluctant MBPs, without success, I called the on-line Apple Store at 1-800-MY-APPLE as listed on the Apple Canada Store webpage.

I was put through to a couple of helpful techs who had me try shining a flashlight on the screen to see if any icons were visible. The login screen could be seen there with the flashlight, but without it the screen was black. After some research on their part, I was told that the MBP would have be shipped back to Apple and it would be replaced.

Then it turned out I had been talking to US Apple personnel and I had to go through a similar process with the Apple Canada personnel using the Canadian Tech. Support phone number: 1-800-263-3394

I have to wait for two or three days for return shipping labels to be couriered to me. Then I have to return the MBP via Fedex, and once it is on its way, then a new MBP will be shipped to me by 2 day shipping.

So much for getting my order in early! I can see me waiting at least two weeks, if not more, for a replacement.

On the plus side, all three of the Apple people I talked to were very helpful. All technological gadgets have some percentage which come "Dead On Arrival." Too bad mine had to be one of them!

I did enjoy the ten minutes I had with the machine. :)

Here's a pic of my HD info.

128MB vs 256MB X1600

I have heard from others that the 128 MB ATI Radeon Mobile X1600 graphics card have a 64 bit memory bandwidth, and that the 256 MB version have a 128 bit memory bandwidth.

Can anyone confirm if this is a issue with the MBP's aswell?

Please post benchmarks and show me how the 128 MB X1600 compares to the 256 MB?

Wow. That sucks.
You must be very patient. I would have gone ballistic.

Download Mega Zoomer. It add full screen functionality to all non-carbon applications.

Thanks installed that but it doesn't work for Firefox, Safari or MS Word so it was kinda useless. I got a question for you guys, I have AVI files on my windows PC that I can see through networking which use the Divx codec. So I went and installed divx on the mac and when I try to play an avi file off the windows PC, all I can hear is the audio but no video, what gives?

That site is talking about ATI's HyperMemory card. As far as I understand it, they utilize some of your systems RAM as VRAM, similar to the integrated graphics on the MacBook (the HyperMemory cards actually have some real VRAM attached, however). I'm pretty sure the cards in the MBP aren't of the HyperMemory variety.

Microsoft Word and Fire Fox are both Carbon applications. So it wont work with them.
It should work with Safari (it works with Safari on my Mac)
Did you quit and relaunch Safari after you installed it?

Hmm no I didn't relaunch it, I'll give that a try in a min. What exactly is a "carbon" application? Also I read something about "cocoa" what's that refer to? Sorry for the newb questions but as I said, this is my first mac.

if they were hypermemory they would include that with the card description. And the benchmarks would be a few extra fps in games very minimal, but always good to have the best

Just ordered a 15' MBP today. Looking forward to the 14th!
Has anyone dealt with MS Office under rosetta? I'm moving over from a PB G4 1.5Ghz.

I used MS Office under Rosetta on my regular MacBook (which I returned, in anticipation of getting a new MBP), and it actually performed fine for me. One thing I was worried about was the "delay" that I noticed when typing on the MacBooks at the Apple store, but on my own MacBook I didn't have any problem like that (possibly the 2GB of memory helped).

Battery life

Has anyone any ideas what the battery life's like? Is it better than MBP1 (which isn't one of its strong points at around 2h30 with most things switched off and the screen dimmed)? I found the G4 would last nearly twice as long as the MBP1.

I'm interested in using it whilst flying.

I haven't properly calibrated yet, but I had about a 90% charge, had to leave for class, and used it for about 3 hours with wireless before it gave me a warning to plug in or shut down. I had the screen at about half of full brightness.

Happy days

My 2.33 / 160GB / 2GB / Glossy just arrived this afternoon! :D

Oh boy, is it one beautiful looking piece of kit. Turning it on for the first time was one of those moments for me... Even after all of the glowing reviews I've read, it still exceeded my expectations. Way to go Apple!

FYI here is my delivery info via TNT to Melbourne, OZ - just in case anyone that is still waiting for theirs wants to know what to expect. Mine was held in Customs for 3 days, which is quite long - most people should get theirs quicker than this:

Date Time Location Status
02 Nov 2006 15:14 Melbourne Delivered
02 Nov 2006 12:57 Melbourne Out For Delivery
01 Nov 2006 19:15 Sydney Consignment Received At Transit Point
01 Nov 2006 19:05 Sydney Change Of Delivery Address
01 Nov 2006 19:00 Sydney Delivery Address Incorrect / Incomplete / Missing
29 Oct 2006 11:03 Shanghai Shipped From Originating Depot
28 Oct 2006 12:39 Shanghai Consignment Received At Transit Point

Mine made it - one day early! 2.33/160/matte

The "live" tracking did *not* show a lot of the scans. When I checked this AM, there was simply departure entries for Alaska, and Indiana. When the status changed to "Out for Delivery" the other scans were filled in.

This might give someone some hope, if it looks like things are not moving along. You can also call FedEx Intl. to see if they have more information, than what we can see on the tracking page.

Here is my FedEx info, for people who have something to look at for estimating their machine's arrival.

Coming from a PB 1.67, 2GB, 100GB 7200rpm machine, this thing is fast. However, launching apps on the 7200 drive edges out this new machine (not by much though). Other than that, the MBP smokes the PB. It also runs cooler than my PB! My PB would get so hot I could not keep it on my lap! I am sure the 7200 drive may have played a role with that.

I also picked up a Verizon Novatel V-640, to fill in the ExpressCard slot. Works great, and they even support the Mac, out of the box now. My V-620 in my PB required a small hack, until 10.4.7 came out. One thing I noticed about the ExpressCard slot over the PCMCIA slot on the PB, is that when you push a card in an ExpressCard slot, it clicks in, similar to the eject button on the PB (for when you eject a card). To eject the ExpressCard, you push in on the card again, and it pops out.

Hope other folks get theirs soon. I am already more productive! Time to load on Final Cut suite, since I just could not deal with how slow it was on my PB. I have a feeling I am really going to enjoy editing again. :D

Thanks to all that posted, and for all the information. It was all helpful.

This type of story made me hesitate to go with BTO. I think there is something about BTO's production line in the factory.

Just for kicks I decided to see how long I could physically make the battery last, while maintaining fairly active (but somewhat unrealistic) use. I was in a cold room, so I turned the fans down with fan control, I kept the screen at the dimmest (but still lit) setting, and was only using Preview, Pages, and occasionally Safari to write a paper (all Intel apps, internet through Ethernet). Airport and Bluetooth were off. Dashboard was off, pretty much every other unneeded process was off. I turned off one of the cores using the processor palette, but that didn't seem to help the battery life at all, and made the fans kick up a notch for some reason, so I turned the second back on after a little while.

That was 6 hours ago. Still going strong.

Well, I just got my 2.33GHz MBP today, and on a full initial charge, withwireless and bluetooth on, running iTunes, Safari and a few other apps, with brightness on 50% (full brightness is almost too bright to use! wOOt!), I got 4:30 before it went to sleep (currently letting it sleep for a few hours before recharging, to "condition" the battery. I was very impressed with this! My Acer TravelMate 8200, with 2GHz CoreDuo only gets 3:00 per charge, and the screen needs 100% brightness for me to comfortably use it. My "old" 1GHz TiBook, at its peak, only got 2:30 per charge using 80% brightness.

All-in-all, I'm very excited about this kind of battery life! I'll be doing some DVD-ripping and Photoshop work this weekend, after I get things installed to my liking - I'm still waiting to hear the fan(s) come on yet! This thing runs totally cool, with temps no higher than 111F yet.

:D :D :D

man... iBorg... I am SOO jealous of you right now (and all you other lucky peeps who have their new computers). How is the glossy? Is it everything we hoped it could be? maybe post some pics... that would be sweet :D
