It's defeatist attitudes like yours that only contribute to the perpetuation of issues with quality control/use of cheap components (as in the MBP LCD). If people don't demand fair treatment (and no, it's not OK for Apple to pry out $200-$300 out of my clenched fist just because most of the rest of the industry is ripping their customers off) what incentive will Apple have to deliver a higher quality product?

I own a MBP too, what's wrong with the LCD?

well, my situation just changed and i am going to be doing a lot more travel than i anticipated; so i just placed my order for a 15" 2.33 with the 160GB drive.

those i have argued with in the past about the 17", please, flame away.

(actually i still prefer the 17", but as of this moment the 15" makes more sense for the next couple of years)

shipping between nov. 8 to 13th, delivered by the 16th.

This further substantiates my theory that the 2GB stick is the hold up for many of our orders.

Heh, no flames...if anything we've always agreed. I've never said anything is wrong with the 17", just that it depends on how you need to use it. I have always needed a smaller computer, so I went with the 15", you're finding you now need one so you did. Totally logical.

If it makes you feel better, we can still argue over matte vs glossy!!:D

Lemon Law

I disagree. It is not defeatist to be realistic. You do not walk into a car dealer of any type and demand a new car because the one you got yesterday has rough timing, or even a cracked windshield, or a bad transmission. You can demand they fix it under warantee. The same goes for computers. You do not get a new one just because there is a blemish, you get it fixed under warantee. The restocking fee is because they can no longer sell that unit as a new unit and must sell it as a referb at several hundred off. Since you were unwilling to work with them to get your unit fixed they want you to pay the fee to cover their losses. This seems reasonable to me. You can pay to get a new one if you do not like the first one, or work with them to get it repaired.

Concerning automobiles there is what you call a "Lemon Law". Varies from state to state and possibly includes other consumer products as well.

?huh? the machine is a 2GB RAM = 2 x 1GB sticks

Your order placed very recently is going to ship in a normal time frame, the 3GB machines are few and far between right now. I only remember 1 person posting that they recieved a machine with 3GB and that was a day 1 order.

Lots of CTO and stock machines with 2GB are shipping normally.

Apple rep. emailed me and said my 2 2.33ghz/3gb/160gb appear to be in the manufacturing process and should ship very soon. I'm taking that with a grain of salt but hopefully he is right.

I believe I mentioned that I ordered a 3GB RAM/160GB HD system and that it shipped on the 30th. But, for the record, it was not a Day 1 order.

A small side note:

Those of you with 15" MBP C2D's in hand, or on-order ... be glad you're part of the 15" crowd.

The 17" people are (as of right now) beginning to receive delay-of-shipment emails from Apple.

Dates (for some consumers in UK and Eire) are being pushed back for delivery on the 17" units.

Be glad you chose your 15" and aren't stuck with a crappy Sony Vaio circa 2001 (192MB ram, 8 meg video, 6 GB hd, Pentium III 600) like I am! ;)

I got my MBP today. I noticed that my computer is running hotter at idle than others have reported on this forum. I am getting 50C when I read everywhere that they are reading 34C or thereabouts. What gives? It seems hot to me, that's going by touch.

Also, the Optical Drive is very loud. I always get a screeching sound when it's spinning. Anyone else have that?

I hope they've not shipped you a Core Duo in lieu of a Core 2 Duo ;)

I saw a bunch of them at the Regent St store today. The Core 2 Duo's so cool (temperature) in comparison with the Core Duo. That's done it for me - I'm getting a new one and my 1 month old MBP's out of here ASAP.

Thank you for shopping at the Apple Online Store

Here come the delivery notices...

I'll take your sony... I don't have a computer and am in the 17" boat... My date for delievery hasn't slipped yet, just the build date has. it is now the 8th instead of the 7th...

If Free 2.33GHz Upgrades From Base Model 2.16GHz Orders Is True, This is Huge News

So a friend ordered a 2.16/2GB/160GB/matte on friday (Nov 3rd) and was given a ship date of Nov 28. When we rang apple care they at first said they did not know why it would take so long, then they said it was because it was custom, and now they say it is because they have run out of 2.16 chips and are giving people the 2.33 C2D for no extra charge, and that is why some orders are taking so long to ship.
Anyone else having such trouble with their MBP orders?
If true, this is huge news. Once they start doing that, there's no going back to 2.16GHz shipments so the entire MBP line looks to be going to all 2.33GHz Meroms.

i haven't yet been able to follow it up, but i'll keep you posted. i doubt it's true, but that is what one apple care rep told me when i questioned why it was taking over 3 weeks to ship a 2.16/2GB/160GB. If they do actually do this, i'm sure it will only be on some orders to fill a gap due to a shortage of 2.16 chips.
But i repeat - so far it's just heresay.

Assuming any of this is true, I don't see why that's the case. They can give some customers more than they paid for if it meets their short-term needs, but they're not obligated to continue to do so.

C2D MBP blows away CD - benchmarks

wow - check out the PS and aperture benchmarks at

http://barefeats.com/mbcd6.html

and that's with a 7200 rpm HD in a 17" CD!

maybe running an older version of tiger on the CD??? i heard rosetta works better in 10.4.8, but that doesnt explain the aperture results.

Mine's being delivered today, SO glad i waited!

People have pointed out that the strength of the Core 2 Duo is definitely supposed to be in really intensive rendering and that kind of thing. I am not so surprised by those numbers.

I turned on a 15 inch 2.33 C2D at the same time I turned on a 17 inch, 2.16 CD... (side by side in the APPLE STORE)

The C2D booted and opened FCP... 33 seconds before the 17 inch had even booted to 10.4.8

I ran this test twice at the apple store....

This convinced me that the C2D is AMAZING!!!

I just ordered my 17 inch tonight!!! 3GBs RAM, 160GB hd, matte screen, warranty...

not that i don't believe you, but my macbook is sig can boot is less than 33 seconds. i timed it once, and i think i got 17 seconds. If my MacBook can boot that quick, i reckon a 2.16GHz MBP can do it as well.
first post on a thread more than 20 pages long... and it will probably be my last

very valid.... and good point... I actually did not see the timer.. The employee at the store timed it with his watch and gave me the numbers... I just pushed the "ON" button..

somebody else on this site should time it... with their computers

: )
