I use an old 30 inch HP display using dual-dvi port on my cmp (now with RX 580 card). I would like to step up to the vega 56 but need a DVI port because I would like to keep my display which I like pretty much. Do you have any idea if the DVI port on a non-standard Vega 56 design GPU card would work, for example ASUS ROG STRIX RX Vega 56 GAMING or ASUS ROG STRIX RX Vega 56 GAMING OC ? (see list here : https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-vega-56.c2993), either in Mojave and OCLP/Big Sur.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I'd say more like 310mm.

That's if you don't want to modify the PCIe fan.

Page One of this thread has a comparison between the various cards. I currently have a Vega 56 (220% of whatever was the base 100%) and I'm fairly happy.
I was surprised that the RX 5700 XT is not part of this chart. How does it compare?
I'm tempted to get a Radeon VII but it might not be worth the effort to gain 290%. The 5700 seems easier to find and cheaper, how does it do in real life (Premiere Pro and Avid) ?

hence, the answer to your question about missing GPUs, etc...

Also, I previously had a Sapphire Pulse RX-5700XT in my machine, and I much much MUCH prefer the 6800XT. The Sapphire Pulse RX-5700XT is VERY loud, it gets quite hot, and IMO it doesn't perform nearly as good as the (obvious) 6800xt.

If you are inclined to do the Pixlas mod, in order to add the 5700XT to your system, I'd say just save up a little more and go for the 6800XT instead, of course you would still need a PC to be able to flash the patched ROM, but that's a whole other story.

Thanks for your feedback. I had read page One again, but it has no mention of the 5700, nor the 6800 either. Will look into this one too!

Hi All. I'm looking for the cheapest card that will work in a Mac Pro 5,1 running Monterey. I have an RX580 that I want to keep for a PC build, and I just need a card that is functional in order to sell my old Mac Pro. I bought a Radeon 5770 1G mistakenly thinking it might work (as it was an official Apple-supported card), but that doesn't even show up in ioreg let alone displaying anything. Am I wrong about that? What's my cheapest option?

AMD RX 460/560, or if you want to hack Big Sur NVIDIA drivers into Monterey, GT710.

if i am using RX 570 Nitro+, do i need to use both 6 + 8 pin for power on the card, or is 8 pin enough?

if i need to use both, is it then
1. Mini6pin to 6Pin
2. Mini6pin to 8Pin

Thanks for claryfiing.

EDIT: the graphics card is listed as 195W and i have seen there are also 2xminiPin to 8 Pin cable available, maybe one of those is enough?

EDIT2: on page 1 it is written : RX 480 - 6pin or 8pin, so i am guessing the same applies to RX 570? i could need only one mini6pin to 6pin power cable for MacPro?

You will provide 150W max using the PCIe and a single connector. Not sure if the card would actually start with a single mobo connection. I had similar doubts about the 6-to-8 cable and solved them with an EVGA Powerlink.

BTW page 1 states there are 6-pin and 8-pin versions of the RX 480.

Make sure the motherboard firmware is 144.0.0 at least.

Regarding cables: the extra 2 pins on an 8 pin are just ground and sense pins, all the power comes through the other 6 pins.

Mini 6 pin to 6 pin is all you need, the 6 pin plug can fit into a 8 pin socket.

As HWojtec suggested buy an evga power link, they are quite cheap.

search this forum for evga Powerlink. I'm using one to power my Vega 56 card.

Ideal solution is using two mini 6pin to 6 pin cables connected to an evga powerlink which it attached to your RX570

thanks, found out that a single mini6pin to 8 pin is enough, even mini6pin to 6pin, to get the card going, but i went for a dual 2xmini6-pin to 8pin, to be on the secure side of thing.s

Ok, I have an RX 460 2GB (HP generic) card and it boots in this cMP 4,1 (original ROM) and HS, thanks to dosdude1.

I read on the first page that this card could be flashed to an RX 560 and that it would support Metal 2.

Does that mean I don't have any Metal support right now? Sorry to ask a newbie question, but that's what you are dealing with.

And wdhich RX 560 VBIOS should I use to flash it? Can I do it in Mac OS or do I have to take it out and do it in a Winter PC?

Thank you in advance.

Don't do it at all, the HP card have a horrible heatsink. All Polaris cards are METAL GPUFamily macOS 2, don't matter if it's a RX 460 or a RX 590.

Instead of looking at cross-flashing your GPU, you should save a BootROM dump, before it bricks.

Yes, the HP card heatsink/fan looks pretty wimpy compared to what you see on most third party video cards.

Don't worry, I did the bootROM dump earlier today. :)

Saved it off to a USB backup drive.

I haven't done the Northbridge thing yet, but I am keeping an eye on the temp. I need to order the replacement pins before digging into that, because if they break..I am down.

On the RX 460, when I look under About This Mac -> System Report ->Graphics/Displays .....

It shows the Radeon RX 460, but nothing about Metal is listed.

And some graphic operations seems weird, a little laggy or something. The card or drivers?
Thought maybe flashing to an RX 560 would make a difference.

Display is nice sharp display though using HDMI.

Longer term, I will probably get an RX 580. Many of them showing up rather cheap used.

High Sierra have poor METAL support and while Polaris cards work fine with 10.13.6, it's Mojave where the performance starts to shine. Get your Mac Pro BootROM correctly cleaned-up/upgraded/reconstructed to 144.0.0.0.0 and have native support for Sierra/HighSierra/Mojave that you don't have it right now.
