Here's another stupid question...

If I don't decide to do this on a clean drive...

Will this be run as an update to my normal operating system, or will I have to reinstall everything?

I understand that normal apple software updates won't exist for me, but my compressor serial should still work if I can get a download, and that's all I really need.

If I got to keep everything though... well that would be quite a thing.

I'm looking at this download package and it's great. Initially, I fell for all the big pretty download buttons to trick me into downloading stuff for windows. I hadn't seen this.

If I throw this on a brand new drive, can I just throw my old drive back in when I want to, or boot to that drive if I want my legit OSX back?

Quick question about this guide...

1b: Get an empty USB-Stick (8GB or more)/use an external hard disk

2b: backup everything on the drive to another drive

3b: open Disk Utility and select your drive for installation

4b: select the partition tab -> advanced options -> GUID

5b: chose a drive name -> select HFS+ as the partition format -> partition the drive

Is he telling me that I need to select the partition on the USB stick he mentions in step 1b or is that the drive that I'm using for mavericks?

1c: in Finder right-click the app and select show package contents -> navigate to /Contents/Resources/SharedSupport and double-cick the dmg-file

What is he talking about when he says "the app"?

You can definitely boot from the old drive.

He's talking about the USB installer flash drive you are preparing with Mavericks plus the modified files you will later put onto the flash drive.

Everything in section A deals with preparing the bootable USB Flash Drive with Mavericks on it.

Just Curious

Is there any update on the 10.9 MPF
Is this still being worked on
Is there a Beta release to be played with?

Have you had any issues so far? Did you update your firmware and/or processors?

I assume if you clone an install, like I plan to do, it'll take regular updates from Apple won't it?

I'm running the original 1,1 firmware, with X5365 processors. I don't think it was a clone install, I essentially ran the OEMden script on an external HD, and then booted off it and upgraded my existing 10.7 partition (figured I can Time machine back if anything goes wrong). No issues at all so far, but there hasn't been any updates from Apple yet either (at least no system updates).

Did you have any issues with both processors being detected without upgrading the firmware?

AppleID issue

I made the terrific mistake of using my neighbors mac to download mavericks. I realize now it is tied to their appleid. Ugh. So I'm going to start over, but need help on what is the best way to download with my appleid? Can I login to any mavericks capable mac with my appleid? Or do I Ned tomdomit somehow from my macpro 2006? Do I need to go buy a used mavericks capable mac?

Also how do I get appstore updates for my apps after the install (assuming I get the right appleid in place)?

You shouldn't need to redownload Mavericks, as even if you can't run the .app itself you should still be able to create the installation memory stick and modify it with tiamo's boot.efi to allow you to install Mavericks on your Mac Pro. You should be able to create the memory stick from pretty much any Mac running OS X.

As for the updates that shouldn't be a problem, they should just work. You just sign into the Mac App Store with your AppleID. Updates for OS X will work, as will updates to other apps which are tied to your AppleID.

Thanks for your comments. I had succeeded in installing mavericks on my macpro 1,1. Ive already switched to my appleId. The App Store is showing several updates available. For some updates not from apple, I have succeeded. For the remaining, there two types of errors. One is the mavericks system update which says my mac is not authorized. Ugh. Next for the iLife apps it says I was not the purchaser. That's nonsense since I've bought all my upgrades ever since I bought this machine.

Is that the 10.9.1 update or one of the other smaller ones?

It is a smaller update. But I need to confirm when I get home.

How did you buy the iLife apps, from the Mac App Store or on disk?

I think ilifemcame with the computer and I subsequently bought updates on CD. then I have received updares from the app store recently. i bought iWork online through the App Store. Heck at this point I would just assume buy it all again if I can get updates going forward.

Install ilife from the old CD and then update from the app store ... it will let you install the ilife updates up to where it thinks your system can run. Thats a start ... be interested if it solves your problem ... no proof of purchase is required for the updates.

MacPro 1,1 Audio

Almost everything is going smoothly on my MacPro 1,1 loaded with Mavericks!

Just need a bit of help with Audio. I cannot get the speaker or headphones to work. I have tried these instructions multiple times with no success. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!!!!

AUDIO FIX (in case it does not work)
1c: open the KextUtility.app by dropping the files inside my "System 10.9/System/..." folder to it
2c: reboot
IF YOU HAVE AUDIO YOUR READY
ELSE
3c: open /System/Library/Extension and delete IOAudioFamily.kext & AppleHDA.kext
4c: rename the folders *****.kext.bak to *****.kext
5c: install the package "VoodooHDA-v2.8.4.pkg" by right-clicking it and selecting open
6c: reboot

Mac Pro 1,1 USB Port Problem

First I want to say thank you to all who have made it possible for Mavericks to be installed on unsupported Macs.

I have searched all over the web but I haven't seen anyone else have the same problem as me. After installing Mavericks 10.9 onto my Mac Pro 1,1 (2,1 Firmware[going to install Intel X5355 cpu]) w/ ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 24GB Ram the system will not recognize my Apple Keyboard MB110LL/B (Wired and Newest Version) or USB drives. It will however detect my Logitech Webcam and mouse and cinema display but only when the devices have been connected during startup. The keyboard does work before startup to enter startup key combinations. If I move the USB bluetooth mouse dongle to a different port or remove the dongle and place it back in the same usb port the mouse will not not work. I was able to install the system update to 10.9.1 but the issue was still present.

Note: Everything on my computer works just fine running Lion 10.7.5. This rules out any hardware problems.

I have tried a few different things so far. First thing I did was check all possible keyboard settings available. The keyboard is not detected when trying to add a new keyboard. I was able to open up the keyboard viewer to use an onscreen keyboard for typing with the mouse.

I have reset the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM as a potential solution but this did not resolve the issue.

Five times I have tried installing Mavericks hoping there was just an error during the install. I downloaded Mavericks from a torrent and thought the file may have been incomplete. I deleted this file and used the download enabler from Rastafabi to download Mavericks directly from the app store. I have installed Mavericks from the app store on my system about four more times without different results. I must say I am happy to have system backups to restore to get a functional computer again. The install location of Mavericks has been from either USB or a partitioned hard drive. Before each install I verify all settings from the install guide to ensure I don’t miss anything.

The only other things that do not work other than the keyboard are wifi and Bluetooth. These are not big issues though because the Ethernet cable does work and I have newer version wifi and BT cards on order. My main focus is to get the wired keyboard and USB ports to work. Does anyone have suggestions for me to try to get the keyboard and USB ports to work in Mavericks?

Thanks!

How exactly did you make the Mavericks installer for use on your Mac Pro 1,1/2,1?

As in did you use "SFOTT" or the same thing manually by following Tiamo's instructions, or did you install Mavericks using target disk mode from a supported Mac with the stock installer app and then replace the boot.efi files. Alternatively did you use one of the older less compatible methods involving Chameleon?

I tried SFOTT but when the keyboard and USB drivers were not working I moved onto using Rastafabi's install guide (Post #914) based on Tiamo's instructions. The install guide is what I have been using lately as it contains the most detailed instructions.

I have not tried installing Mavericks using Chameleon. This looked like too messy of an install and Tiamo's method is much cleaner.

I manually made an installer disc using Tiamo's guide on his original post. It took me maybe 10min minus burning the disc but I made a disc image of the installer. I can upload it to my mega account if you want to try that. It is only for the 1,1 though as that is the only board id I added.

Chameleon is fairly easy but is less compatible than Tiamo's boot.efi. Chameleon does require some tweaking depending on your setup.

That would be great if you could upload your installer disc. It is at least another option to explore. I can edit the plists to work with my computer.

I tried SFOTT again today. Mavericks 10.9.1 installed but again the USB ports did not work. I could only navigate the computer by the Logitech mouse and logmein on my tablet.

Hello there, I've managed to install Mavericks on my Mac Pro 1,1. Everything runs smooth, have upgraded the GPU to Ati HD 5770 and 2 days ago the CPUs to Xeons x5355 from x5160s.

Installed a cheap USB 3.0 PCI-e card which I bought from eBay here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/161145724764?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

To make it work, I've installed this driver here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/genericusbxhci/files/

Maybe this will help some of you to upgrade to USB 3.0 your Macs and probably will fix the problem to USB ports on your Mac Schultzey...

Thanks to everybody who is involved on this project, making us all use our Mac Pros for some more years...

Greetings from Greece!
