Power management kext fail?

I'm getting this crash during times of high CPU or something. Can't really tell. Picasa was uploading during this panic.

EDIT: Just got a completely different panic. Same situation.

Wayne...now that I've been running 10.8.3 on my Late 2007 MacBook (3,1) seemingly issue-free, I've been thinking about the next step to truly getting my older MacBook humming.

Last year I removed my internal SuperDrive, replaced it with the internal HDD, and put in an SSD in the hard drive bay as my boot drive. I installed 10.7.5 on the SSD, and use the HDD to store all my media files (iTunes & iPhoto libraries, videos, etc.), with most of my regular-use apps on the SSD as well as the OS. Managing what goes on the HDD and what goes on the SSD was all done manually, with symlinks created on the SSD to point to their locations on the HDD as needed.

I guess my question is... could I now just create a true Fusion Drive setup and have the OS manage all that for me? I've been reading the following blog writeup at OWC which describes how this would be done:

http://blog.macsales.com/17624-os-x...tup-option-for-non-fusion-drive-equipped-macs

A 2007-era MacBook running Mountain Lion with a Fusion Drive setup would be great, and would extend the life of my trusty ol' laptop that much more. Any insights would be appreciated.:)

Ok, I attempted the Fusion drive setup per OWC's instructions...and every time I get to the last step (entering the command to format the Fusion drive), I get a kernal panic about 80% of the way through the format. Booting back into my MLPostFactor'd install partition shows the Fusion array in Disk Utility, but it shows as full and won't let me format or repair the disk. Anyone know a workaround/fix?

Which version of OS X is this kext from?? Also, I'm comfortable with installing kexts, even on my real Mac...! It's a Mid '07 with GMA 950 (which doesn't seem to have too many problems relating to the actual GMA)

EDIT: Just got a completely different panic. Same situation.

My Mac Pro 2,1 (formerly 1,1) with upgraded Intel Xeon x5355's giving it eight cores, 16 GB's of RAM and a genuine (Not Flashed) Apple ATI 5770 graphics card boots, performs ALL apple system updates, all while running OS X 10.8.3 flawlessly.

Which method to install OSX 10.8.3 did you use?

I also have a 1,1 (still running 1,1 firmware) with an Apple 5770 and I'm curious to know which method you chose, if you use it as your primary OS, etc.? You seem to mention trying different methods, so I was wondering which one worked on your Pro 1,1.

Between Wayne's original method he posted, waiting on MLPF 0.3 64-bit, J4MIE's blog, threads on netkas, it is very confusing to know which one I should put some effort into, but since you have already achieved success, I hope you'll be kind enough to point me down the right road?

Thanks!

Sure I would be happy to assist you. If you click back to exactly one (1) page here in this thread of this forum (go back from page 100 where we are posting now to page 99) you can read everything about the method I utilized and my experience with it.

here is the link to the method: http://www.jabbawok.net/?p=47

Upgrading your firmware (1,1 to 2,1) is not really necessary nor needed unless you also perform the Mac Pro 1st generation processor upgrade (acquire two (2) matched Intel Xeon x5355's) which if you are inclined to want to do I would HIGHLY recommend.

Yes, I have 5355's, it was a wonderful upgrade. Also upgraded the wifi card to support Airdrop.

I will look into Jabbawok's method you linked (sorry I missed that post).
To rundown the methods I've read (there are similarities here and there to them):
http://www.jabbawok.net/?p=47
http://www.j4mie.co.uk/blog/2012/02/18/how-to-install-mountain-lion-on-macpro11/
https://webcache.googleusercontent....p/topic,1123.0.html+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
Of course, there's this thread.

And then there was Wayne's original method, found here:
http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/18/install-os-x-mountain-lion-developer-preview-on-old-unsupported-macs/

Did you explore this method, gpatpandp? It seems so elegant for a MP1,1 user with an updated graphics card - no boot drive, no bootloader. I'm curious, if Wayne reads this, do you believe this method is still valid for Pro 1,1 users with an updated graphics card? What would be the advantages of waiting for MLPF 0.3 over this method if you have access to a compatible machine to install ML with?

To my knowledge (and admittedly I could be wrong) however, the "Jabbawok" method is the only method that I know of that will recognize/accept and install with one's true amount of RAM memory no matter how large of an amount that may be. And as I paid a decent penny for my 16 GB's of RAM, in my opinion it would be fruitless to utilize any OS system that was not compatible with my investment.

How to Update?

Hey guys I have a MacBook 4,1. I just used MLPostFactor to install Mountain Lion 10.8. It worked perfectly. I wanted to update to 10.8.3, so I followed the instructions exactly as they say. I used MLPostFactor and applied it with the 10.8.3 to the install partition. Then I did the combo update. I shut down and tried booting into the install partition. It showed me a Circle with a Line through it. So I boot up into my Lion partition. I tried applying it again. Didn't work. So then I thought to apply the patch straight to the ML partition, and when I did and tried booting up into it, It showed me the circle and line through it. So I have no idea how to fix it since I did follow all the instructions (at least I think I did). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can, reinstall 10.8 and get it bootable.
Then check to make sure your INSTALL partition is bootable.
Then boot into 10.8 and run the 10.8.3 updater and let it finish. Restart when asked and hold down the OPTION key, select the INSTALL partition.
When the installer comes up, select MLPF from the drop-down UTILITIES menu, then CONTINUE and CONTINUE again then SELECT DESTINATION DRIVE, choose destination(ML) and OS version(10.8.3) then INSTALL. After install is finished, hopefully you can boot into ML 10.8.3.
Don't know if this is any help but it worked for me.
Good Luck.

But see, that's the problem. I had the INSTALL partition bootable, ML was bootable, everything was fine, and I was doing everything you just mentioned except that when I applied the MLPF for 10.8.3, it made the INSTALL partition unbootable...

Hello,

can I update from 10.6.8 using this method? As an Upgrade as the guide shows that you install to a fresh partition.

many thanks

You have to have at least 10.7.5 (LION) to run the MLPF installer. It's in the instructions on page 1.

Boot Camp assistant/partition works fine for me, 64-bit Windows 8 Pro on a MacBook 2,1.

Good luck!

The post you quoted even stated it.

Yes, but I didn't check it for myself. I have now and it states on page one, "a Mac with Core 2 Duo processor and with Lion installed", to me that's clear enough but I suppose if that's changed to, "The MLPF installer will only run on 10.7.5 or later", then it would be crystal for everyone.

Apple it self marketed Mac OS X Lion as that, and not 10.7, so Lion is the correct term.
