I'm going to install 10.8 on my outdated MBP.

I have a late 2006 MBP A1211. It has an ATI X1600 (so I'll be using the 32 bit installer).

I'm taking out the superdrive and using a hard drive caddy. Ill be moving my existing 500GB hard drive into the caddy. Ill install an SSD in the Hard drive slot in the MBP.

Question is, do I have to have all three partitions on the SSD or can I have the ML and the Install partitions on the Hard Drive and keep one partition: Macintosh HD on the SSD? Also, any other tips or tricks I should be aware of? Should I jump on right now with V0.2.2 or wait for V0.3?

Thanks, keep up the good work!

You should build an USB Stick to install ML and set your system as FusionDrive. I made this to my MacBook and my MacBook Pro and it rocks!

You should build an USB Stick to install ML and set your system as FusionDrive. I made this to my MacBook and my MacBook Pro and it rocks!

The install requires 3 partitions:

1.) Macintosh HD
2.) ML
3.) Install

Should I put ML and Install on the USB and have Macintosh HD (on the SSD) as the OS partition, right?

Appreciate the help! (I worked throughout the weekend, so I haven't had time to take the MBP apart.)

Edit: Just looked up Fusion Drive. Looks pretty impressive! Do I just wipe the 500 GB Drive as well? How do I set up partitions? this sounds really interesting. I'm really excited! Thanks!

Edit 2: After doing a little more research:It says that I have to use 10.8.3 vs 10.8 (which MLPostFactor requires 10.8). 10.8.3 is required to format the two drives as a fusion drive. Did you use 10.8.3? If so, MLPostFactor worked without a glitch?

Also, is there a significant speed jump by using fusiondrive? Reason I ask, is that I wanted to keep the OS on the SSD and have all my data files on the HDD (500GB). SSDs, in the past for me, were notoriously prone to failure. I'm afraid of not being able to access my data, if and when the SSD decides to clunk out. Ill be running time machine via wifi just to be safe. Your thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

MLPostFactor does not detect "Install OS X Mountain Lion" on my machine

Hi!

I have a Mac Mini A1176 with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, running OS X 10.6.8. I have downloaded the installation of OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store to another Mac, and copied the installation to my Mac Mini via a USB stick. The Finder on the Mac Mini is showing the "Install OS X Mountain Lion" app; it occupies 4.46Gb.

When I try to launch MLPostFactor, it just shows the "You must have Install OS X Mountain Lion.app in your application folder !" dialog and exits.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have an APP or a DMG in your Applications folder? If you have a DMG you will get that message, you need to have the APP there.

as stated many times before, you have to be on lion (10.7.x) to do this! Not snow leopard (10.6.x)!

I have an app.

Hmm, in this case why does MLPostFactor even run on my system? Would it be more natural to have Lion as a minimum system requirement for MLPF?

Anyway, how to I upgrade to Lion from Snow Leopard? I hear that Lion has been discontinued by Apple and is no longer available via AppStrore. I have tried to download the dmg's from various grey sources, but not having much luck installing them on my machine.

If you can get Lion from one of those "grey sources" you can make an installer with a DMG and a flash drive and Disk Utility.
You need an 8gb drive and you just do a restore of the Lion DMG to the flash drive.
Good Luck.

Because it is not a paid solution, it is all made "at home" by 2 very handy people in their spare time. Maybe they made it a bit too professional looking, judging by the demand some people have... If you would have read this forum, you would have known the answer. This is all experimental, it involves a high degree of self-help! Although the way Wayne and MLforAll are developping this tool (and new website), I wouldn't be surprised if in due time this becomes a "Mountain Lion For Dummies" tool.

As always in many situation: RTFM: Read The Fu#%ing Manual. :p

Um... Sounds un-normal? Mine works, remember to re-do MLPF after update too!

I'd recommend updating to 10.8.3 (download the update by a google search) and then running MLPF, and seeing if it works.

Fixed Icons

I don't know much about hacking but I can contribute an improved icon.

I noticed that your icon had anti-aliased edges so here is your icon with fixed edges. :D

Sucssess on xServe late 2006

Thanks hackerwayne!
Your work has made my day! I was very skeptical that one could overcome the hurdles Apple as thrown in our ways
- but you did it! And in such an easy and comfortable way. It is truly amazing.

Now i am just waiting for your .3 release to fix the AFP issue and then i cross fingers the Apple Server Software
installs on top of the patched system.

I am really exited!!!:)

BTW: Will it be possible to install your 64Bit version on this late 2006 xServe - to use more memory and the original AFP / SMB kexts?

Greetings,
Ben

I just made a new method using your kexts, check it out:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1574460/

My goal is to make everything as simple as possible and avoid people making mistakes.

Well.. apparently you just took our files and created another thread about it? Why don't you work with us on this thread? Im not too happy about that.

I had the same problem because I wasn't finishing the install.

Wow, thats just what is stated NOT TO DO, in the beginning of the thread...! You just stole the hard work of Hackerwayne and MLforAll. Why would you do that??!? What is there not clear about the pictorial and video guide?? And don't forget the website they are working on...?!? I absolutely cannot grasp why you did that, only to make a good impression for yourself.

Please, delete your thread, and appologize to the people who made MLPF.

First, I already apologized in my last post, second I had a goal with my thread which was to get rid of extra steps like partitioning your hard drive and running MLPostFactor after installing, and I wanted my method to be as authentic as using a newer mac (that is simply opening the app and installing OS X). Finally, I misunderstood the first post saying "do not use for commercial purposes." I thought it meant not to sell it or directly copy it, and I didn't do either as I actually still did put work into my app and it does not work in the same way MLPostFactor. I even made sure to link to this thread and make it clear that I did not take any credit for the kexts. Anyway, I am not deleting my thread just yet, I want to wait on feedback on if it works and just know that i never meant to do anything wrong!

Don't flame mate. Its alright, he didn't use it for commercial purpose either. Im saying he could have worked with us to centralize everything in a single thread. & not creating another thread and talk about it there with our files here. He has good intention too, to simplify the method for general public.

I already stated why i need that additional partition. Do you really think we can't make it install without a partition?! How are you gonna go about updating it? Reinstall the whole OS? I know you have good intention, but if you want to give suggestions, do it here. Not creating a separate thread and talk about it there.

Its up to you. I suggest that we do the discussion here, since when we fix things here, what are you gonna do? Take the files here and dump it over there? Its not like its on a different forum. And we'll have to answer 2 separate sets of questions? Having duplicate questions on 2 different thread?

I've decided not to provide support on that other thread and will not allow further copy of our files due to:

1. Users might ask questions that has already been answered here.
2. Confusing users (deciding which to install)
3. You can't update using that method

Method that will make everyone happy.

1. We can do discussion here. We work together as a team and gives credit to everyone that contributed.
2. Combine both methods together to make a better tool.

You really want to use your method?
Alright. Then we can:
1. Implement few options in MLPostFactor. Including an option to not have a partition created & overlapping on top of Lion.

UPDATES.

Alright, nuff of all that crap. 0.3 has entered private beta, expect release shortly. Waiting for MLForAll to pack everything up and do some final checks and we're done. Expect the following item fixed. Security on files will now be implemented.
1. SMB/AFP (Thanks to eep357!!)
2. Bonjour
3. Disk Utility issues.

4. Kextcache issues. (Still in progress)
- If kextcache issue is solved, all the following will be resolved as well.
* BootCamp not detecting drives.
* Installation Failed message towards the end of installation
* System no longer runs in root.
* No longer has LoginWindow issue.
