Perhaps because the M3 wasn’t ready, so they made a stopgap product.

As a consolation prize, the M3 is more likely to be an A17 now.
Quite possibly, I suppose a simple chip bump to the M3 < 1 year later might not be too bad (even if it is quite a big performance jump) but if the OLED rumours are true that would probably be a bit galling.

yawn Gurman, there will be M3 MBPs, M3 Studio, M3 Mini, M3 MacPro coming in 2024 ...
and, Apple is also working on A18 already
telling us hat a tech company does for a living ...

Exactly what has kept me away from mostly all new Apple things for a while now.

It’s tremendously frustrating to see the very transparent gouging game they are playing.

Lock it all down and then absolutely HOSE people on upgrade pricing.

Agree on the frustrating aspect. Getting more ram is only available via Apple BTO, which means in addition to not having the convenience of buying it via a local retailer, you'll also never see any sort of discount. So it's not just an extra let's say $200-$400, its even more because you can usually get a discount on the base models.

I think some of these leakers like Gurman don’t actually have a source for some things. Of course Apple’s going to release an M3 version next year. Let me guess “according to a rumor” they’re also releasing an iPhone 15 in October.🤣
My thoughts exactly. And once the M3 is released guess what good people?! The M4 will come after that!

In a few years' time, your existing M2 will be not good. As in not supported any longer. Apple will find a way of making it incompatible with a future macOS update.
Look at how long Apple is supporting OS updates on iPads, iPhones, and Apple Watch. If that's any indication, no reason an M2-based Mac gets at least 6 years of OS updates.

The headline of the story reminds me of the event in London where Steve Jobs was launching the iPhone with 02 (at a time in the UK where other phones had 3g and could take videos) and a journalist asked him, words to the effect of, 'are you working on the next iPhone.....(presumably 3g) and his response was.....words to the effect of 'we're working on the next iPhone and the one after that.....' I'd be more shocked if Apple insiders stated "Apple isnt working on M3 chip for MacBook Air 15inch and so on......' I'd even bet they are working on a 'non pro' version of the 'Vision' device waiting to slot all the 'tech' in as it arrives. In other news, Apple are working on iPhone 16 and 17.

Mac sales haven’t been performing well this year and Apple likely saw that by late 2022. Who is buying M2 (or M3) when so many have already upgraded to M1?

The 15-inch model is likely a copy and paste of the 13-inch logic board. They fast tracked the project when Mac sales were starting to dip.
So you think they were likely targeting an M3 launch, but as that seems to still be so far out, they had to rush it out with an M2? Seems plausible given the initial rumours were for it to have M3 (I seem to remember?).

That's not entirely true. It's been possible to get some slightly higher builds via BB/Costco/etc lately separate from BTO which helped on pricing a bit. I also generally buy apple gift cards from target to get like 15% back.

But ya if you want totally custom you need to go through Apple (esp the binned cpus or odder ram builds)

Really?

Do you have any links to those?

I have been watching places like Costco forever because I love them but I never see anything with additional RAM for sale there.

My prediction is that we will see the first M3 in the iMac this fall after the iPhone 15 introduction. We will see it migrate to the other products beginning early 2024.

Not too exciting news. I won't be buying another Mac until a 27" (preferably 32") M3 iMac is available. Although I might consider a Mac Studio if a reasonably priced large Retina display finally shows up. To be fair, my M1 Max MB Pro is amazing and I expect to be using it for 5-10 years so I'm not in any rush anyway.
