I just response to them saying ya, and Swimming pools are just big bathtubs. That pretty much stops them dead in their tracks.

(I took that from someone who said it on these boards, can't remember who it was)

Really? It was just said a page back...

My responses fall into two general categories:

- 95% of people are really interested in it. It's harder to hide, so I end up doing way more demos for it than my gen 1 iPhone. It's actually getting annoying. Take for instance yesterday, I had used my iPad to fill out a test review sheet for marketing class, and was studying off of it on the shuttle and in the study lounge at the student union. People kept bugging the crap out of me, but I was nice to them. Even today my mechanic saw that I had an iPhone and asked if I had an iPad. He can't wait to get his and is so excited about it. He asked if I had it on me or in the car, and I didn't. He was the last person I would have expected to ask me about it.

- The rest of the people, the expected douchebags--that is, the people who you can count on to be retarded and make snarky comments will hate on it. Like this tool that always shows up late to class and always misses critique, but always tries to sound like he's a lot smarter than he really is and makes dumb remarks. He went on and on with the iPad hate. So did this dumb girl who didn't even get accepted into the design program. They're just failures who don't know anything who like to go around being jerks. I pay them no attention.

Haha, I'm in print production class right now, and my professor just mentioned my iPad demonstration from last Monday again. He had me bring it in to show the students the future of our design target, and how physical printing will be eventually phased out. I love it when he lectures about the iPad! Its nice to be in a program with so many Mac users, but that's to be expected in graphic design. He says that 5-10 years the iPad will be the primary device that media will be distributed on, and around 10 years from now we will all be using beefed up versions with pressure sensitivity to do our design work on. Nice.

I posted earlier about a couple people I work with and their insults/general take on Apple products.

Today, I had 2 people I work with today ask me about it as they both know I have one. The were pestering me all day bc they want me to bring it in so they can use it.

Unfortunately I am pretty anal about others using my things. The one lady never washes her hands and eats all day long... So I don't feel like having doritos seasoning on my device. The other guy is a smoker and he all the new work equipment he has had deployed to his recently have a strong smoke odor about them. I told them I don't have my case yet so I cant bring it in (which is true).

Its kind of comical how there can be people on complete opposite ends of the spectrum on the same team that you work for. I've learned to ignore the haters and I tell the beggars that its in display at best buy. :D

Oh give me a break

Everyone loves this stuff, at least adults.

Only flack you'll get is from Internet dweebs.

I've had people who barely know what a computer is ask me If I have an Ipad.

They're not snickering, they're curious.

I'm luke warm about the thing myself, as i'm too busy for it. But it's certainly a hot item.

For instance, on another forum, someone even made a thread about me about learning I got an iPad. I'm truly intrigued at this insanity. Has any of you been insulted for owning this revolutionary device? If so, share your experiences here. I'm sure there are some interesting ones. :D

I read that thread and I see a big problem there… they all asked a simple question, but you didn't answer it. Maybe you've answered it elsewhere, maybe not. But they clearly don't understand the appeal, so explain it to them:

If someone asks what an iPad does that another tablet can't do, you tell them. It's not what it does, it's the way it does things. Linux, or a command-line interface can do everything Windows can do and more, but there's a reason people prefer a nice GUI, just as there's a reason people prefer the iPad to using a netbook or laptop; it just takes the hassle out of certain tasks.

This is something that cannot realistically be argued against until they've used the device themselves. It's generally what I use to get haters to go quiet.

Tablet devices have been around for a long time. Apple did in their first release of one, what over a decade of other manufacturers could not.

I was insulted by my boss when I brought my iPad to work on April 5. He said his opinion of me went down a notch.

Really? Wow. I’m not sure why he cares so much?

Anyway, the whole "you don't like it because you can't afford it" argument is at a level of a 5th grader. I know it may shock some, but there are legitimate reasons to criticize Apple products, other than for the lack of funds.

You can have your own personal opinion about the iPad.

However, there’s no legitimate reason to insult or make rude comments to someone about their new iPad or any other purchase (car, phone, etc) for that matter — talk about a 5th grade level.

What happened to respecting other people?

You know, I personally don’t particularly care about my co-worker’s new car, new cell phone, new pet or hell most of the time — new kid, but I’m respectful.

How hard is it throw out a “Congratulations.” or I’m glad you like it.” or “Seems cool.”? You might make the world just a little bit better for that person that day.

Even if you think they’re bragging, always take the high road.

Just because Apple dumbs down the UI aspects of their devices doesn't make "technically inclined" or "IT people" any less relevant. Someone still needs to develop the applications.. design the hardware.. engineer the "data clouds". Don't confuse "using" the technology with "creating" the technology.

And don't lump all IT folks in the 'create' category. The ones most threatened long term are those in Support... Yes, in the enterprise you'll still need admins, etc. no matter what the actual client device is. But how many help desk calls are these things likely to generate as compared to PCs?

Going back further, it's really quite a laugh to see all those people who put down the GUI in favour of the Command Script.

Yes, it's true. The GUI wasn't as powerful back then and couldn't do everything a 'real' computer would, but look what happened in a few years. The haters definitely learnt to shut up by the 90's.

History is truly an endless waltz.

ANd you only mentioned the most recent turn about the room :) Before windows->touch and command line->windows there was punch cards->command line...

Although I could care less about what people think of the ipad or of me for using one, my response to the "it's just a big..." is:

Well, yeah... but a Ferrari is just a big Miata (no offense to the Miata guys/girls out there). I also comment that it feels like using something from the future.

How about this one... Pamela Anderson's chest is just a big version of the other one... what's her name? Oh yeah, nobody cares.

Yeah, I recently received my iPad and love it to bits like most of us here, as well as most people who have actually touched one with their own hands.

We have already established why there are so many iPad haters in real life, but mostly on the Internet. It can be summarized in the points below, according to that discussion:

- Many people are Apple haters.
- Many people judge without experiencing.
- They just can't afford it.

Even the harshest critic would have problems saying bad things about the iPad after actually using it, so those reasons above make perfect sense. Now let me ask you this, have you been insulted for using an iPad?

For instance, on another forum, someone even made a thread about me about learning I got an iPad. I'm truly intrigued at this insanity. Has any of you been insulted for owning this revolutionary device? If so, share your experiences here. I'm sure there are some interesting ones. :D

How nice that you have been charmed by this 'magical, revolutionary device'. There are some people who don't belong to these three categories, that still think the ipad is more or less a complete joke.

For a start, there was anticipation for an Apple Tablet, but I don't think that the ipad qualifies. It doesn't have a stylus, or handwriting recognition. It doesn't really serve any useful purpose, save for being a locked down digital content delivery device, which is why I suppose that the print media have done everything possible to hype it up. Apple itself had a promo slide saying that the ipad is an event just as monumental as when Moses recieved the Ten Commandments. A joke? Maybe, but it seems more like a sign to me that they have lost their ***** minds.

To sum up, I would personally be embarrassed to be seen fingering an ipad in public, after all it just seems like nothing more than a toy. I'll pass on the whole 'experience' thanks. While I might not hurl insults at ipad users down at the local starbucks, I'll still shake my head and wonder how people could be so pathetic.

If someone were to ask me why I bought an iPad instead of a more powerful laptop, I will just tell them because I like watching people rage about it.

And for our part, we are happy to do our little part in enabling you to feel good about yourself. Enjoy those moments of perceived superiority. Sometimes it's all you have to keep you warm.

Anyway. I was getting a few snarky comments at work, the 'big iPhone' ones and also, for some reason, "it doesn't have USB, I heard". But the commenters have turned out to be the ones who stop by my desk more and more every day and ask me more and more questions about it. Heh.

I'll do that. Meanwhile, everyone here can enjoy all the attention that you might not get otherwise - I suppose sporting this new techno toy goes a long way to compensate for bland personalities ;)

What a troll! Yeah, stylus and handwriting recognition have worked out wonderfully for PDA's and Windows tablets. :D.

You must be another "features guy" from the Windows camp. Or just not very bright. Handwriting recognition is a complete waste of processing power. And a stylus is just something else to lose.

And yes, the iPad is a locked down digital content delivery device. Exactly! For some of us, it is very useful in that role. When we want to create something we grab a different tool. When we want information quickly and easily on the go, we grab an iPad.

Good luck with your imaginary slate (aka stone tablet). Perhaps you can scribble out a review for us when you get one.

As opposed to the way you're compensating for your own inadequacies (wiener & wallet).

I had an incident in my photography class last night.
I put the pdf manual of my camera on to my iPad [GoodReader FTW] and took it to class with me. Somewhere in this iPad forum someone mentioned that the iPad attracts the females. I can confirm that this is a true statement. 30 seconds after I got in to my seat - " Hey! Is that the iPad? ". It was chain reaction after that and the rest of the females in the class were huddled around it chirping away gleefully.
The only person who wasn't excited, was the other guy in my class [an elderly gentleman]. The first thing he asked was how much I paid for it and after I told him he asked "why would you pay so much for something like that?". I told him that I bought for both it's convenience and potential.
" What makes it so convenient? "
I explained that for me, it's more convenient than a laptop for things that don't require that much computing power. I told him that I can power it up faster than any of my laptops or desktop computers. The size makes it really convenient to have in a household - if I or my wife want to try out a recipe - install epicurious and head into the kitchen. Install the fireplace app, put it on the dining room table, turn down the lights and the wife and I can have a romantic dinner. Then I told him that I've loaded just about all of the pdf manuals for the electronic devices, component and appliances that I have in my home - now, all conveniently located on a device that can go just about anywhere.
Before I could start to tell him about the web and multimedia he says " That's a lot of money for convenience ". I said that depends on how much you value convenience. So I asked him if he had a driveway at his home and he said "Yeah". I asked him how long it was and he said "It's almost 25 feet". Ok! So I asked if he owned either a snow shovel or a snow thrower and he replied that he owned both. So then I ask, "When we got dumped on with 25+ inches snow during the blizzard back in February this year. Did you find it more convenient to clear your 25ft driveway with a shovel with a cost of maybe $15 or with a snow thrower with a cost of $500+?"
All he could say was "That's a good one". After that I showed him the Masque photography app while telling him that the iPad would be great for photographers to take out in the field with them [once Apple releases the camera kits] on shoots. He became more receptive once he started swiping pages on the USA Today and NPR apps - more so when I adjusted the font sizes for him.

Once the people with all the preconceived notions and apprehensiveness about the iPad actually get one in their hands, it doesn't take much change their outlooks on it.

.

My iPad is only attracting guys. :(

When I told people I was getting an iPad, they had no idea why I would "waste" my money. I then let them use it...opinion, changed. Seriously, people who don't get it probably haven't used one yet. Once my family and friends used it, they fell in love and now most of them want one!

As opposed to the way you're compensating for your own inadequacies (wiener & wallet).

Good lord, this is the reason I posted in this thread in the first place. The idea that anyone who dislikes the ipad must be poor or envious is completely repulsive.

As for the angst about Apple, I'm currenly posting this from my Unibody Macbook Pro, FYI :apple:

As for the handwriting recognition, yes it has been problematic, but I hoped that the whole reason Apple was releasing a tablet was because they had ameliorated these same problems.

Also, anyone who walks around with an ipad right now and thinks they are not attention seeking is kidding themselves. That's all from me folks, Good day

It's just human nature.. A lot of people will buy iPads just to impress others; and a lot of people will ridicule it (and people who buy it) because they're threatened by it. Or rather, they're threatened by the attention it's getting.

That's just the way we are; in every thing we do we're constantly competing for the attention and respect of others.

Told a female in work that i was getting one and her reply was

"those things are S$&!E , did they not have to send hundreds back because they were broke"

I explained it was a merely few thousand out of the hundreds that sold , and also explained the prepay 3G plan

her reply back was

"so thats the whole point of having a mobile contract so you can go on the internet on your phone"

:mad::mad::mad:

I held my anger in people dont worry , the only thing is she knows nothing about computers or tech thats what annoys me the most.

Arghh ipad haters you gotta pity them.

I just punch people in the face when they make a negative comment about my iPad.

It's more fun that way.
