HELP! HD locked on reinstall!

Hello, I came across this thread and images look similar to mine. Essentially wanting to wipe my iMac ready for a family member, however, on doing so, wiped the disks. Then accidentally restarted the machine. Which went into internet recovery mode. That finished then back into recovery mode. And my Disk utility is showing my disks are in Red (see image).

It asked me to "Fix" them. When I selected. Now it's been hanging for almost 6hrs. The spinner is still working and the loading bar is moving. Does anyone know how long generally this takes?

I was trying to do a factory reset having no previous knowledge of mac computers im pretty sure i ended up wiping both the hard drive and the recovery. I dont have to hit command r at startup. Im automatically brought to the repair screen

Your Mac is too old to have Internet recovery, so this leaves you in a bit of a bind. Do you happen to have one of the old OS install DVDs still? Or access to another Mac where someone could help you make a USB key installer. Or I see on Amazon some people are selling the old Snow Leopard or Lion installer DVDs that would work for you.

Yep... newer versions have Internet recovery where you can just download the OS over the Internet. Yours does not have that so you need some external source for the OS like the options I listed.

Hello, I hope you're well. I have a question regarding re-installation.

I rebooted my MacBook Pro and erased Macintosh HD as well as Macintosh data. When I re-installed, I had two options for utility disks, I chose the Macintosh HD utility disk and now every time I get to the home screen "Macintosh data is locked" pops up. I don't even know what this means, but am hoping I could get some guidance on how to get rid of it/ resolve it? Also, is it suppose to have two utility disk options?

Then tell Disk Utility to Show All Devices. Then select the drive ay the very top like in my screenshot and format. That will wipe all those other volumes so you can start fresh.

Your Disk Util will look a little different since my screenshot if from Big Sur.

If anyone else is having similar issues:

I went to the apple store for a suspected hardware repair for my 2017 iMac, which just resulted in them erasing my HD and installing Big Sur. I had been on High Sierra and all my Time Machines were in High Sierra.

Getting back home, restoring from Time Machine wasn't working and I got error messages about the system not being able to be restored due to the conflicting formats, and trying to reinstall High Sierra from an external boot drive was giving me a "disk locked" message for the internal HD. I had seen the "make sure all devices" selected during formatting indicated in other discussions to help resolve the lock, but could not find that option anywhere.

Essentially (to the best of my understanding), the HD was formatted for Big Sur and wouldn't take High Sierra, (or perhaps they accidentally did an encrypted formatting during my repair job?), and I couldn't for the life of me get it to format properly to accept the older OS. Until I finally found this screenshot, formatted and did an internet recovery for the factory OS High Sierra.

You are a godsend. Such a little thing got me hung up for so long.

Interesting side note... my Time Machine was on a Drobo. This required the additional step of a setting up the fresh high sierra OS, download the drobo dashboard so the HD would properly recognize the drive array, set up Time Machine with the dedicated drobo partition, then restart AGAIN in recovery to do a full restore from Time Machine and FINALLY get myself back to where I was before this whole debacle.


TLR -- reverting from Big Sur to High Sierra macOS with a "disk locked" problem during reinstall, selecting "Show all devices" and reformatting the SSD parent drive helped resolve

I'm not quite sure how you got in this mess, but here is how to fix it. (I am assuming here there is not some underlying hardware issue that got all this started).

Hold command-option-r at boot and select your wifi when asked. Then you will see a spinning globe while the recovery utility downloads and installs. Once that is done you will see the recovery screen. From there launch Terminal from the Utilities menu and enter the line below exactly like I have it, including the quotes. That will blow off the Fusion drive.

diskutil cs delete "Fusion Drive"

Now quit Terminal and launch Disk Utility. You should see a screen like this offering to fix the Fusion drive. Go ahead and click Fix to rebuild the Fusion drive.

Now quit Disk Utility and click reinstall OS X at the top and wait for it to finish and restart. This will put you on the OS X version that came from the factory. You can update to El Capitan after if you like.

What you are seeing locked there in your second screenshot is the Recovery HD partition, and that is as it should be and not the problem. The problem is you borked the Fusion drive somehow and this will fix it.

Can you explain what lead up to this and what you have done so far?

It just means you don't have a Fusion or Core Storage drive configured and not necessarily that anything is wrong.

Can you explain what problem you are having?

I tried to do a factory reset, but must’ve deleted the wrong “Macintosh HD” When go to the Terminal and type in your code. it says no core storage. Thanks!

To elaborate on this, I tried to do a factory reset following directions online, when I tried to reinstall OS X, I got to where i enter my apple ID and then it went to the “prohibitory” screen with the circle and the slash.

If this is a MacBook (laptop) it would not have a Fusion drive, so that core storage command would not show anything.

What year model is this MacBook?

Thanks so much for the response! Yes it is. And okay, I was just trying some of the tips you were giving others. I’m lost over here. When I tried to do the factory reset, I believe there were two files named “Macintosh HD” and when I selected one, made sure it was the “journaled” one, and hit erase, that has been gone since. I now only have one Macintosh HD file on disk utility. I would guess the laptop is around 2012.

Can you boot to Internet recovery by holding command-option-r (all three keys at once) when booting? You will see a screen where you enter your wifi info then a spinning grey globe while the recovery utility downloads.

Let me know if you get that far.

Did you see the grey globe before that installer launched?

If so, try clicking Reinstall OS X and follow the steps.

It looks like you are in regular recovery, and not Internet recovery, since you did not see the grey globe. Since you got this far in regular recovery, go ahead and try the reinstall.
