It’s ok but some of the widgets in the widgets section don’t do dark mode. I’m hoping that this will be fixed because it is jarring.

I’m likening it but it’s horrible when the 3rd party apps don’t support it!!
So to fix this I’ve setup smart invert as a accessibility shortcut so then I can change from light to dark and back again when I want.

It’s something that’s nice when supported but as others have said it’s a bit hit and miss at the moment.

Find it much harder to read things - I tried for a week on my MBP and turned it off. Tired for 1 day on iPhone and turned it off - just not me.

maps looks horrible with it

While I don't necessarily think Maps look quite that bad, it is the only stock app that bugs me when using dark mode. I'd like for Apple to change the colors a little bit, ie. the greens a little lighter and more pronounced, but other than that, I can live with it.

Oh, and on the X there's some "ghosting" (don't really know how else to describe it) when scrolling f. ex. the contact list with the alphabet bars between the contacts. Yeah, really not that well explained, but maybe the idea of what I'm trying to say is coming through. It's, as I understand it, because the OLED screen, so it's a feature that I just have to accept.

Other than that, cool beans.

I would agree with changing the greens etc, but it boils down to personal preference. I find text easier to read black on white, dark mode oddly triggers more optical migraines. Maps as in in a car using it for sat nav needs some changes. I guess I prefer night shift at noght to dark mode, same on my iMac. Ghosting is there on the Pro as well, I know what you mean.

Is it as half-assed as on OS X where there are dark on darker colors at various spots? You wouldn't think inverting colors to create a 'dark mode' would be seen as a feature of the upgrade. Pretty lame.

Not that it fixes the not-great map design in Dark Mode, but I filed a suggestion back in June that they add an option just like the one they already have on macOS Mojave (and Catalina, too) to override Dark Mode for the map and always show the map in light mode. Looks like they never got around to it.

The effect you describe is called OLED smearing.

It’s not as simple as inverting colors.

I like it fairly well. Messages, Mail, etc. look good. Macrumors looks good. But I hate browsing sites in Safari and getting hit with bright white pages.

You can somewhat fix that in accessibility and turning “invert colors” on, but it screws up some images, people’s faces, etc (even though it’s not supposed to) and that bugs me. Also - the color inversions aren’t always the best choice.

More options are always a good thing. Personally I love it. It goes great with the new macrumours dark theme too. :) eventually all apps will have a dark mode you just have to give it a little time.

Not gonna use it. It’s very nerdy and very Android-esque
What does this even mean?

I think you’re concerning yourself with ‘the rivalry’ unnecessarily.

Apple forced the white screen nonsense on us years ago, glad they gave the choice for dark mode because it’s easier on the eyes
That white theme wasn’t my thing - some apps didn’t have a clearly defined text typing area because they wanted an all white pallete, so you didn’t know where to tap to enter text...Also, the removal of visual buttons (replaced with icons) wasn’t as practical nor visually appealing for me.

I’m really impressed with it. On the iPhone Pro, the blacks look so amazing. The entire UI so far for native apps is really beautiful.

Once third party apps and websites get on board, I think it will be one of those features that you can’t go back from.

I also have the automatic toggle on, so it feels pretty seamless from day to night.

Extremely jarring using it and switching to an app which doesn't support it (like whatsapp for example). Devs really need to get their chit together and update their apps.

I almost had a fight with my BF because he thought I was chatting with someone on Grindr when it is actually just messages in dark mode looking like a Grindr theme 😂

I have always loved dark mode. It’s long past due we have it. Would be nice to see Apple have a few themes like you get on android but I get it. I had android in the past but didn’t keep them because I just prefer iPhone so that was the sacrifice. Now with the inclusion of it if in iOS 13 I’m super happy and it really makes using my iPhone so much more enjoyable.

Just happy to have it now. It looks great on the oled display of my Pro Max and for me just makes it so much better on my eyes.
