How's this for the other extreme?

Macintosh IIcx
MacBook Pro - 2.2 GHz

I don't like to rush the upgrades! lol..ok, so I had one or two PCs in between.

Not sure what's coming after that one to be honest.
iPod Nano (first generation)
iPhone 3GS

I long for Apple to realise there's a hole in their range for a sub £1,100 desktop between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro that's never being filled with the iMac because an entry level desktop with a limited amount of user expandable PCI slots and drive bays used to co-exist with the iMac just fine, even when specs overlapped.

Probably be adding either a used Mac Mini or a used Mac Pro to the list eventually.

I went not nearly as far, but with nothing in between: PowerBook 5300c -> 12" PowerBook G4. Of course, that was just my "primary mobile" segment. I did have a number of desktops in between, along with what would now pass for a netbook.

And I know someone who honesty went from a Performa 600 (aka Macintosh IIvx,) directly to a Quicksilver Power Macintosh G4. Nothing in between. She was a writer, and only retired the Performa because her modem died, her printer crapped out, and then the floppy drive went belly-up. So all methods she had to get information off the computer disappeared. (I had to bring an old serial-port-and-Ethernet equipped PowerBook to move her files to my PowerBook, then move to her new Quicksilver.)

Oh and to answer your question OP, Mac users tend to fall into two groups, those who upgrade infrequently (like me), and those who upgrade constantly. I knew a guy who upgraded his laptop every 4-6 months, basically every time Apple offered a speed bump or introduced a new product. He also usually had "one of each" of Apple's products, so he spent a good $20k a year on Apple hardware.

Strangely enough, there seem to be a lot of people like him on MacRumors, although I don't have any hard data on this. Hopefully this thread could shed some light on it. ;)

Yeah, I'm with you -- five Macs over fifteen years (see my sig), and one of those (the PB 3400) I bought used, as a replacement when my iMac died. All of them are now working, though in the iMac's case a lot of the parts have been replaced, and it's running Linux.

The best part about that computer? You could turn it on with any Sony TV remote. It saved me lots of time when I just had to walk by the den and turn on the machine while waiting for my coffee!

yeah, I still have it. Thought about gutting it and putting in a Mac Mini. Of course trying to keep the subwoover working and the infrared sensor. Just have to find the time.

I owned 4 Macs:

- Apple PowerMac G4 Digital Audio, 466 MHz -> latter upgraded with an 1,2 GHz Sonnet CPU card
- PowerMac G5 DP 1,8 GHz
- Mac mini 2007, 1,83 GHz C2D
- Mac mini 2009 2,26 GHz

Right now I don't have any Apple products and don't plan to buy one, unless the Mac mini get's upgraded to an i3/i5 ...

My first (of many) Apple laptops was a PowerBook 170, one of the original "notebook" class computers. It had a really large trackball right in the middle of the palm rest and I really enjoyed it.
That was my first Apple laptop. :)

Almost bit on the original Apple portable computer, but it was too expensive. Then they introduced the 100, 150 and 170. It was a hard decision between the 100 and 170 for me. Reminds me of the MBA 11 and 13 discussions. Ha ha!

Finally went with the 170. It had 4MB of RAM and an 80MB HD. Upgraded the HD to 120MB for about $500 a year later. Then upgraded to 213MB about a year later. Upgrade the RAM to 8MB and it was expensive. I was doing development at the time and needed all the HD space that I could get. My main computer was an 840av Quadra. It finally died on me. But the 170 still works, or did. It's been about a year since I fired it up. Guess I should check and see if it still works.

Ohhh god. Am I really gonna try this??

<snip list>

And this is since around 2007, when I was 13. :)
So if I understand you correctly, you purchased all these in the past 3 years.

If true, then you really didn't pay the "Apple Tax." :p :D

Just joking. Seriously, that is a nice historical Mac collection. :)

Any place but here or there....
5 for me

I don't remember the PowerMac I bought in 1996 but that was my first.

iMac teal tube (1998)
iMac g4 (2002)
iMac g5 (2007)
iMac (2010)

iPhone 3GS, 2 first gen iPod shuffles 3 second gen iPod shuffles and last years Nano. I was a notorious iPod killer until I got the phone.

Will eventually get a portable to write on as a secondary computer (Not that I need it). But as long as Apple makes computers (and may they always do, I'll buy 'em).

I am impressed by the folks who have all of their older machines. My only regret: getting rid of the 2007 iMac.
