Tried to watch a couple of the Mac Studio tear downs but the presenters were totally obnoxious but at least I got to see the location of the 3 antennas. A interesting detail discussed on the one of the Apple forums is they talk about the performance being improved if you turn the Studio upside down or set it on its side to better position these antennas. I am a ham radio operator this idea is really bogus. The Spigen stand raises the 3 antennas perhaps 1/2 and inch considering the frequencies we are talking about that is more then enough to get any improvement that might be had, which is not going to be much.

Here you can see the 3 antennas. top right, bottom sides left and right.

I've had my mac studio on it's side so it can fit on a cabinet shelf with two OWC Thunderbay 4s and a Sonnet Breakaway Box. In that orientation, it looks like a small tower. And yes, it still collects dust in this orientation.

Filter foam is the solution to this issue. I am looking over the different densities of filtration.
SizeInitial Resistance*
(Pascals)
Average Synthetic
Dust Weight Arrestance(%)
10 PPI0.01 (2,49)38
25 PPI0.03 (7,46)63
45 PPI0.07 (17,41)80
60 PPI0.12 (29,84)82
*in inches water gauge

If you look at the 45 PPI density it has .07 inches of water resistance and gets 80% of the dust. The 60 PPI goes to .12 inches of water and only gains 2% in filtration. The 60 PPI comes in sheets 12 x 16 x 5/8

I am going to try this. The "DustEnd" filter material is self adhesive. I just cut it to fit and attached it to the underside of the Spigen filter stand. Its adhesive did a very good job sticking down and sealing the base up. The black foam will enable me to better see what is it filtering out.

So far so good I am being a little paranoid about temperatures but I have iStats loaded and I can see no difference. I can look at the temperature range for up to 30 days at a time so I will be able to see if there is any increase in average operating temperature.

Following some of the suggestions on this thread I've tried raising the Studio a couple of cm, but after a week of testing it doesn't seem to have any effect: the dust layer on the bottom air intake is more or less the same. I guess the only real solution to avoid dust particles floating in the air is to use a proper filter.

I'll try with the Spigen stand first, and maybe attach an additional filter foam if necessary.

As I said up above, there are going to be filter stands coming out that will be considerably more effective than what few choices we now have. So basically right now we are doing a holding action to mitigate whatever problem there might be until than.

Got my Spigen today from Amazon. The Studio fits nicely on top with no visible gaps, so I guess I was lucky. I did some testing and so far the temperatures don't seem to have increased more than 1 or 2 degrees Celsius at most, which is negligible.

I'll give it a few days before checking the dust filter. Fingers crossed.

I have the iStat app loaded and it gives me a total view of all of the sensors on the Mac Studio. To the left is the real time figures reported by all of the sensors. On the right is the 30 day average temperature for the entire Studio.

After a year I flipped the MacStudio over. Wow! That’s some level of grime. We have a housekeeper twice a week and a robovac runs every morning. There is no visible dust anywhere in the room—except on the grill of this thing. WTF? And it’s deep in the little holes, too.

Just saw the notes about the Spigen stand: that will be here tomorrow. Hopefully that keeps it from getting worse. The machine runs so cool I’m not too worried about what’s in there already. But I would recommend using something on this machine.

Holy crap!!! I bet the units at Apple do not look like this!

I took off my Spine after a month and barely any dust or debris. Worth it IMO.

Just getting ready to set up my new Mac Studio and was wondering if there were any more thoughts on the Spigen vs. Hagibis stand, now that it's been out for a bit longer. Thanks to the group here. A very informative thread.

My Spigen still works a treat. I check it every month and although I get dust on the desk, there’s none in the filter. I also lowered the [M1] fan setting to 1100 so there’s less chance of gathering dust.

Has anyone used an air purifier on their desk, or in their office, to see if that makes a major difference? If this method works, which model of air purifier is the most effective and economical?

In my case, I've been using the Spigen for some time now and I would say it blocks 50% of the dust. The filter can't stop the thinner dust particles: they go through the holes and can easily reach the Studio's bottom grill. I know because when I wipe the grill with a black soft cloth I can clearly see a white layer of very fine dust adhered to it.

Anyway, it's better than nothing. And it also prevents the Studio from moving across the table when I plug or unplug a cable. I finally decided to keep it, although in my opinion it's not worth the 50 euros I paid for it on Amazon.

Have you noticed any temperature increases since lowering the fan settings

If they create something like the Spigen but with a hepa filter all around, that would be the perfect choice.

As the newer M2 Macs are running at a lot lower fan speeds, the Spigen I've got hasn't actually caught any dust yet after a couple of weeks. Let's see how it looks in a few more weeks.

What is the height of the air-intake grill on the Mac Studio? My Studio is on order so I don't have one to measure. I'm going to get a sheet of open-cell foam to use as a filter and was wondering what the best thickness is for the foam ring that will surround the bottom intake grill on the Studio.

I just measured mine and it looks like it's right around 11mm tall.
