Works for me and I can confirm that the benm tethering hack still works afterwards. So I now have tethering and MMS on 3.01 using itunes 8.
So will att charge you extra for the tethering, or will come out of the 5 gb limit att has on us??
For everyone wondering about tethering with the http://help.benm.at/help.php hack: if you are running OS 3.0.1 go to https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/792908/ and follow the instructions.
If you are running OS 3.0.1 you can do the carrier update to AT&T 5.5, then MMS and tethering will both work! If you update to OS 3.1 tethering will not work. If you go to http://help.benm.at/help.php it has a video on how to downgrade.
Also be careful the ipcc file will try to save as a zip file. Don't let it.

I have the benm tethering hack only, I stayed with 3.0.1, manually installed the 5.5 carrier file, and I definitely have mms and tethering working. As do many others from what I'm reading. Was reading last night somebody has a supposedly official AT&T 6.0 carrier file that appears to allow for both mms and tethering, but I don't fully understand where he got it or what exactly it is and does, and whether it allows for tethering on 3.1.
Sorry if this has been asked already, but I've done this workaround (32 GB 3GS on 3.0) and now have ATT 5.1. Sent MMS attempts freeze with the satus bar at around 90% before failing, and attempts to recieve any haven't shown up.

I'm located in Central NJ if that matters for anything...
BTW, the only way I was able to get through the command promt step was to take out the " after itunes.exe...kept getting invalid command responses. What's up with that?
Update: Nevermind, I changed the carrier to 5.5 using the OP's first link and just changed the file name to .ipcc and it seems to be working

So I have reinstalled iTunes and am still getting the same error! I tried updating my USB drivers and it tries to get the update from the CDROM and not the internet, there is no option for me to get update online? My current USB driver is Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C
Is this the correct driver?
Added the IPCC to get MMS, Tethering, and Visual Voice Mail ALL working. Tested on my 3.0.1 32G 3GS and all are working perfectly. (Must be on 3.0 or 3.0.1)
I am not quite understanding the original post. You have 2 downloads for the 5.5 carrier file then you stated if you want MMS/Tethering/VVM, to download the 6.0? Will the first 2 downloads break tethering (which I'm assuming they're the 5.5 carrier file)? Sorry, I would just like some clarification so I don't lose my tethering but I would like the new carrier update.
I'm still completely stumped as to why I can't install this update. I've tried everything except completely uninstalling everything from Cydia and having to reinstall it all over again. I would love to try this. Is there a Windows equivalent? Is this something I can do through iPhoneBrowser or do I need an SSH client?
Nice. Easy as 123 and works perfect. I have MMS, tethering and VVM working 100% on 3.0.1 on my non-jail-broken 3GS. I had previously done the benm tethering hack so I wasn't sure which carrier file to use. I chose the 6.0 version and all is good.
I'm still not getting it.
I'm on a iPhone 3G 3.0.1 OS NOT jailbroken so i don't have the Cydia ATT logo but i'm still getting the error message. Is something supposed to happen when I run the command prompt? mine just skips to the next line after I enter the command.
