Of audio playback with the screen off most likely. That's not use, use is the screen being on and actually using the phone.
Don't assume.

40 mins was used for audio nothing more.

It's like me saying you got 12 hours usage due to audio playback.

Fairly heavy usage today.

I don't have anything to play audio on my phone. But cool story.
You're the one who assumed my usage was down to audio when it clearly wasn't. I'm getting over 10 hours usage every charge so clearly more than what the average was in that link. Moral of the story is everybody will get different usage

First day or so it was awful.

Now things are looking pretty good, I can go a full 9-5 workday and still have around 40% when I get back. (Est 7+ hours of usage under battery settings / 14 hours standby) Pretty much consistent with what I was getting with my 7+ if not marginally worse, but nothing noticeable.

I'd consider myself a heavy user as I'm constantly using camera/snapchat and other location based apps.

Anyone who is actively using the phone for messages, emails, web browsing, youtube, facebook, instagram, etc... Is going to get 7-8 hours of use on an X... Maybe 9 if you're lucky.

My battery life with my X sucks so far. I'm on day 5 of use. It dropped from 73% to 58% in half an hour. Yesterday, I couldn't get through a day with it and I didn't use it that excessively.

Same here. I’m at 6 hours and 44 minutes of usage with 14% left.

Do you think we have bad batteries or could it be we are just using it more than others that are getting 10+ hours with some to spare?

Mine is not as good as with my 7, which is shocking to me. I’m using it the same.

I’m disappointed with the battery; I kept hoping it would get better after a few days, but not so far.

4.1 hours of usage
12.3 hours standby (off charger, whatever)
59% remaining

Mostly used for Audible background (18%) phone (15%) Kindle (15%) Facebook (12%) Starbucks (6%) Photos (6%) and Mail (4%) Messages (4%) not including the little things under 2%

Theoretically I'd be unplugged for 30 hours and have 10 hours of usage before it dies, which is similar to my 7+ on iOS 11.1, however, on iOS 10.3.3 my 7+ could get 20-30% better battery life. iOS 11.1 and older is a battery waster.

So my next test will need to be a torture test where I just use it non-stop until it dies.

I have no idea what Audible is doing in the background to use up 18% battery - I force quit the app 20 hours ago after the download of game of thrones was so slow that I canceled it and didn't listen to a book. I'm turning off background app refresh since I rarely use the app except when I was signing back into several apps and decided to download a book while I was at it. I have 80% of my apps set to not refresh in the background, so this one is added now.

Starbucks should also not be using 6% in the background when it's also closed most of the time, as I only used it 3x to buy something in the past 24 hours and then quit the app. I tried to turn off alerts when near my favorite stores but I still get alerts.

X = 7-8 hours of real use. Not audio playback.

8+ = 12-14 hours of real use. Not audio playback.

Therefore, if someone is getting 6 hours on an X they will get 11-12 hours on a 8+.

Is it really that hard to understand?

They got 6 hours of use on the X... The 8+ will give them double that from 100% to dead. How can you argue that I'm wrong? There's literally pages of 8+ screenshots that show 12-14 hours of use.

So an 8+ genuinely gets 12-14 hours of screen on time. Are you sure?

My battery ran all the way down by 4pm today no gaming no videos no music no gps, quick charged it back up to 95 percent its now just before 10pm and im at 54 percent only browsing while watching tv, nothing intense. Battery life on the X is way worse than my 6+ or my regular 7 ever was. Also, my screen brightness is under 50 percent. I always kept my phones at 100 percent brightness before.

Whoever says their battery life is better is either full of it or keeps it in their pocket all day. Its not even close

I have a Plus that hits that almost every day.
My 7+ gets around 8.5hrs SOT but usage time varies if I use podcast, radio music etc which make it seem like i get more...generally if I browse web, reddit, Twitter I average 8.5 screen on

That's about right considering iOS 11 seems to be using more battery than necessary on the 7 Plus for some reason.

8+ still wins.

Today’s rundown, very happy with it, definitely comparable or a smidge better than my 7+, especially on iOS 11. Note the one hour of Netflix at top wasn’t over LTE with AirPods. Notice, screen off audio isn’t in the top apps.

Right where it should be... But the 8+ still wins.

Are you saying that because you believe that since you don’t listen to audio on your phone that the 12-14 hours must be screen on time? If so, that is completely false. Usage time in iOS is essentially any time the processor is actually being hit with background processes or tasks to perform (phone calls, messaging, background refresh, etc).

The only actual way to measure screen usage is to add up the on screen time for each app in the battery section of settings. However, this poses its own issues as you only have stats for the last 24 hours or 1 week. Therefore you’d have to have a standby time of exactly 24 hours, then add up the screen on times to get your accurate measurement. For extrapolation purposes you can take the total number of minutes and divide that by 1-%remaining(decimal format). For example, my screen on time for apps adds up to 212 minutes (although 114 of those are on the phone which for some reason counts) and I have 53% left. That extrapolated out would mean I get a solid 7.5 hours of screen on time with my X (212/(1-.53)). My current usage stats though show usage of 341 minutes, which I could extrapolate out to getting 12.1 hours (341/1-.53).

All this is academic though since there is no way to predict how I will use my phone for the remaining 53% of battery life. Also, when counting screen on time I’m really only at 17 hours standby instead of 24, but I need to have my phone charged for the morning so I’m plugging it in; effectively clearing that day out. I could see the 8+ getting slightly better battery life than the X, but certainly not a >2 hour difference with usage patterns being the same; unless you had a bugged install of iOS.

My usage time only increases when the screen is on. You can test this by simply taking note of the battery stat page which shows the usage time, current time, battery percentage. Put your phone down and keep it locked, do not use it for 10,20,30 minutes... The usage time will not change. Maybe by 1 minute while the phone goes into a deeper idle mode. If you play music though, the time will keep increasing.

That is false. Any google search or just looking at your phone would tell you otherwise. Usage time is when the phone is “working” be that screen on or off. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201264

Usage time takes many formats, not just screen on and audio. The method I mentioned is the only actual way I’ve seen to accurately calculate and predict possible screen on times.

Okay so I added up all the times in my list and it comes to 234 minutes which is 3 hours 54 minutes correct? My usage is 3 hours 52 minutes and 11 hours 25 minutes of standby.

Like I said, if your phone is working properly your usage times doesn't move when it's locked and not playing audio.
