The iPhone was designed to be used comfortably with one hand (thanks Steve). The mutant phones we have today are aimed at people who don't use pockets or one hand to do anything (eh hem, I thank you). I love my iPhone SE, and I'll be skipping the X. I'm not interested in a larger phone, period.

I got enough money but the design of the iPhone X sucks big time

Why did they include a screen on the left en right side of the camera? its just useless and looks very ugly when apps are open. I wished they created a bezel on top instead to make it a straight line.

I've owned every new iPhone up until the 6 plus which I still own

To me, the 6 Plus has gotten better and better after I've seen how Apple has gone heavier and fatter with the successive generations, adding dumb features (force touch) that no one needs and that only add to the weight and heft of the device. Slim and light are where it's at.

As to the SE, I tried it. Batt life is nice. But the screen is way too small for occasional Web surfing. Keyboard mistake-prone. Never really thought that form factor was comfortable in my pocket (too fat). No can do.

If you already had the 7 Plus, I don't really see the point of this. The 7 Plus isn't going to sell for a ton anymore and you already paid for it. You are paying more in the end and getting an inferior product, unless the big screen was unmanageable for you. The SE is fine for what it is, but I'm not sure why people would go back to it from the 7 Plus or even 6S Plus.

Do you think the functionality of the Apple Watch 3 LTE will make the SE obsolete or less appealing? This would give people the option of keeping their larger screen phones yet still have calling and texting features in a more compact size with the watch? Not sure if I necessarily agree here but saw this same statement posted elsewhere.

I have a 6 right now with a cracked screen. I'm about to pull the trigger on a black 128 SE. I don't need the latest tech. The only game I play on my phone is candy crush. I love the form factor too.

My iPhone 7 Plus is brand new. 128GB/Matte Black with 1 year of AppleCare+. I should get $650 for it all day long. I'm then pocketing about $200 after buying my SE. And yes, as I mentioned before in this thread, the size was a huge driver for me. That and the idea of going back to the basics without sacrificing speed/camera.

This is a great thread! I'm a previous 5s user and upgraded to a 6s early this year, kept the 5s for backup. I too watch all the hoopla prior to the new Apple releases with anticipation, and this years offering is huge, more models than ever before, but I'm just not giddy about buying any of the new stuff. My 6s is just like new and see no reason to let it go for the 8 or X models. I still occasionally get my 5s out and use it as an Itouch just because I love the size and build of it so much. Honestly, at this point I am kind of just in the keep what I got mode until the next new model introduction and then I would be very much interested in an updated SE model.

I love my SE, only thing is I am tempted to upgrade to the 128gb model but really don't need it.

I enjoy this thread! Currently have an iPhone 7 128gb and am very bummed that there isn't a 128gb option for the iPhone 8. I had been planning on just spending extra and getting the 256gb iPhone 8, but it just doesn't sit right with me. I am very tempted to get the 128gb SE. Here's a novel concept for 2017...a flat front that actually allows me to use a screen protector that covers the whole screen!! And not leave a tiny gap on both sides like every phone out today!! Headphone jack is icing on the cake. SE for the win.

I'd get the SE and sell my 7, and would then probably cave and get the Pixel 2 128gb which will likely be $750 at most. I really like Android Auto and the Pixel line...or...I will just get the 256gb iPhone 8 and be exactly the sucker Apple wants me to be...:confused:

Day 2 on my new SE and really loving the phone! I think many people missed my earlier response or it was too long to read but I was worried I would miss that bigger screen and that first couple hrs of real use after first getting it felt weird but since then the phone rapidly grew on me and I am totally shocked on how much I really like this phone. Price, speed, quality. This is also gonna make a great backup phone to have on hand for in the future when I eventually upgrade.

I got a Google Pixel last black friday on an absolutely amazing deal but sadly have had nothing but issues with the phone. 2 warranty replacements later still having issues. Dropped calls, I can hear people and they can't hear me. I finally had enough so I grabbed an SE for cheap yesterday. Phone has been been amazing so far.

That's my fear if I go with the Pixel 2. Decisions decisions...

Yeah it's tough. Google is not really so much of a hardware company but I thought the Pixel would be a great phone. So disappointed. I went from an iPhone 5 to a Note 3 which was an amazing Android phone to the Pixel and now back to iPhone basics with an SE.

Once my current Pixel contract runs out late next year I will consider my options then but I will probably stay with Apple for awhile after the Pixel debacle. It's funny I go back and forth. I was on Apple for a long time then Android for awhile not back to Apple.

I get that reasoning. The SE is a solid phone, and I am glad that Apple gives that option to those who want a smaller phones and don’t need the latest features.

In a way, the iPhone X is appealing to me because it has the features of the Plus (and more) in the body that is close to the standard versions. I had been debating getting the plus this year but now I don’t have to. The price premium is a bit hard to swallow though, but I will splurge.

I don't blame you the X looks really sweet. If I was not stuck in a contract currently I would definitely consider the X. I just did not want to go a full 1k out of pocket right now. :)

Every year for the past 5 years, whether I'm eligible for an upgrade or not, I buy the brand new iPhone. It's become kind of a personal Christmas-in-September for me.
...
YUP. I went rogue. As of an hour ago, I ordered a 128GB Space Grey iPhone SE. It arrives tomorrow and I'm actually quite excited about it. While most of you may think that I took a major step back, I kind of feel the opposite. The iPhone SE feels like 'ol trusty. It's the last of what was a great breed of iPhone - the last sign of Steve Jobs. It's fast enough to compete with today's standards, it embodies the ergonomic form factor, it packs a 12MP camera, has Touch ID, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As much as I didn't want to admit it, the annoyance of not being able to charge AND be plugged into a speaker or have wired headphones in posed an issue more than I had hoped. The iPhone SE will do exactly what I need it to do...and it'll do it for $449. I'm going back to the basics for a while and I'm hoping Apple will do the same.

What a great post. Makes me sad though to see the end of a tradition like that! I follow a similar path as you every year, except this year did not pre-sell my 7 plus. I went through a bit of 7 Plus disappointment with the Video hiss issue and speaker quality issue and missed the headphone jack, so went back to a 6s Plus for a few months and have recently re-acquired a 7 Plus. So it’s not so old to me yet.

Most of your points are valid kind of, but 1) get over the notch issue and 2) stay involved in the annual cycle! I know the SE is a great phone blah, blah, blah, but come on! This is an Annual Tradition! Who knows how long this will last?? You want to bail on it now?

Just imagine, you’re at a coffee shop with a friend and you see someone with a super cool looking phone and the person you’re with asks you “what phone is that?” And you have to answer “I don’t know”! Do you really want to be the person that is out of the loop?

This is game changing stuff, as Tim Cook said, this will set the groundwork for phones / devices for the next decade, and you want to take a pass?!

Sure, there will be plenty of arrows to take, we are all guinea pigs in this experiment round 1, but really, isn’t that part of the experience?

So you have the notch (get over it) the price (so the resell will be higher in year which means no real / minimal net price difference to you) no touch ID (this is huge, but this IS the game changer). Given this, I expect to see you in the pre-order group come 10/27...

:)

COME TO THE DARK SIDE! It's pretty fun over here

First of all, I laughed so hard at your username. Second of all, "Pocket Rocket" is the best name for an iPhone, more specifically an SE, that I've seen. I might just have to steal that. :)

That's what I just did -- offed my 7 Plus on Swappa for a good price. Pocketing $200 from that sale even after buying my SE. It just got here and I'm about to bust it open - it's like my very own launch day! Hahah.

I'm definitely planning to hang onto this phone as a backup. It's much easier to do that when you don't have an $800-$900 piece of equipment that you have to sell in order to fund your next big purchase. :)

I hear that. That's kind of how I've felt about new releases in the past..big expense, but I'll splurge. I never got that feeling for this release. I do hope you love your X, though. Be sure to come back and post some pics.

Hahah. Hey, I'm not going anywhere!!! I will obviously return to my normal traditions next year and I will hope they come out with something I'm drooling over. It would be a welcome surprise if they totally revamped the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, keeping the X as a sort of "special edition". I could see them keeping Face ID on the X and doing a complete overhaul of the 8/8+ with Touch ID.

I have the SE but I find the display way too dim, especially when using outdoors. Depending on what the iPhone 8 costs tomorrow on contract I'll upgrade to the 8, alternatively 7 if I find the 8 too expensive.
Great phone otherwise!

I bit the bullet joined team holdover and bought a refurbished 6S. My only concern is battery life, if it doesn't live up I'm going to get the SE.

For those who switched from a phone with a 2nd gen Touch ID back to the SE with it's 1st gen Touch ID, did you have a hard time going back to slower unlocks?

I'm on a 6S and considering getting a 128GB SE. I was one of the few who lamented Apple's larger phones when the 6/6+ came out because I love one-handed use. I bought a 6 and hated it -- it was too big, slow, and this was my first time using Touch ID and I thought it was too slow. When I got the 6S I was used to the size and found it much faster than the 6 and I appreciated the faster Touch ID.

I have older iPhones lying around. A 5S that feels great. The 4S even better. The 3GS/3G had best feel and grip (don't need a case for good grip). Whenever I pick any of those up I realize I long for a smaller phone and I'm still fumbling around with my 6S after all these years with that form factor.

I wish they'd update the SE. I'd even pay decent money for a high-end phone in that form-factor. There's a bunch of things missing from the SE, but the slower Touch ID is the biggest thing that I'm concerned about. I guess I can try it out on my 5S to get a feel for this.

If I bought the SE now, and they updated it next year, I'd be fine with that, as I'd probably sell and upgrade (and be very happy to). So that's not a factor in this decision. But I'm planning to buy something and my 6S is going to be handed down, and it's either the SE, 8+, or a used 7+. Why plus models when I want a smaller phone? If I'm not going to have easy one-handed usability I'd like a larger phone with the better camera system. And the X is too experimental for me to jump on board with.
