I did something very similar. I sold my iPhone 7 Plus 128GB, waiting for the iPhone X keynote. Underwhelmed that it didn't feature any Augmented Reality sensors on the rear of the phone (Why demo ARKit at WWDC???), I started looking elsewhere. I wasn't about to drop $1000 or $50/month on a phone.

I have been using a 5s 16GB for the past week while my iPhone 7 Plus was shipped to the buyer. I actually love the build on the 5s and find the size refreshing.

So what did I do? I ordered a 32GB iPhone SE from Best Buy for only $140 and took the cash I made on the iPhone 7 Plus to the bank.

I'll let all the bugs get worked out on the iPhone X and hope that they release something new next year which can benefit all the R&D they are spending on AR.

Every year for the past 5 years, whether I'm eligible for an upgrade or not, I buy the brand new iPhone. It's become kind of a personal Christmas-in-September for me. About 2 weeks before the new phones are unveiled, I jump over to an older phone so I can sell my current model. It was no different this year; I re-activated an old 5S and got my matte black 7 Plus boxed up and ready to sell. I love all of the hype beforehand, the Apple event, the pre-order, waiting on delivery, unboxing my new toy, and enjoying the "honeymoon phase" for the next two months. I live for this stuff.

Until this year. Everything was on pace to unfold like any other year. I followed along with the rumor mill and patiently awaited for the Apple event...but before I knew it, the event was over and I was left feeling completely underwhelmed. Of the lineup they announced, there is not one device that I'm yearning for.

Where should I begin? I guess I'll start with the price tag of the base model iPhone X: $1000. For that price, you can buy a MacBook! Maybe I could look past the price tag if it weren't for the ugly black notch at the top of the device, the lack of home button/Touch ID (which, in my opinion, is the most natural and efficient form of device security), and the lack of 128GB option. 64GB isn't enough for me, so I'd have to spend $1149 on 256GB. (Sidebar: this might be what aggravates me the most. It's a sales tactic that Apple has deployed for years: take away the middle-of-the-road storage option and force those buyers to either upgrade their storage or downgrade their storage. Most will choose to upgrade and spend the extra cash. Ironically, it hasn't really bothered me until this year - the year Apple priced their flagship phone at and above $1000.)

Having said all of the above, maybe I should just go for the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. Well, not the 8 Plus...I really wanted to downsize this year. Okay - so the iPhone 8! What new features will I get?? A glass back...a faster chip...a slightly nicer screen...and wireless charging. Well, I'll get wireless charging if I want to spend the extra cash on a Qi charger. I won't get portrait mode since that's still only dedicated to the Plus model phones. And, lest we forget, in order for me to get the appropriate amount of storage, looks like I'll have to drop $849 on the 256GB model.

Although, I have kind of been enjoying the use of my old iPhone 5S. Speed aside, it's a great little phone (keyword: little). Man, if they offered this with an upgraded camera and some faster hardware, I might actually consider it. ***DING, DING, DING!*** The iPhone SE. I almost forgot about the iPhone SE. A souped up iPhone 5S! Feels great in the hand, fits right in my pocket, easy to handle, and...COMES IN 128GB?! Wait, am I about to go COMPLETELY rogue???

YUP. I went rogue. As of an hour ago, I ordered a 128GB Space Grey iPhone SE. It arrives tomorrow and I'm actually quite excited about it. While most of you may think that I took a major step back, I kind of feel the opposite. The iPhone SE feels like 'ol trusty. It's the last of what was a great breed of iPhone - the last sign of Steve Jobs. It's fast enough to compete with today's standards, it embodies the ergonomic form factor, it packs a 12MP camera, has Touch ID, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As much as I didn't want to admit it, the annoyance of not being able to charge AND be plugged into a speaker or have wired headphones in posed an issue more than I had hoped. The iPhone SE will do exactly what I need it to do...and it'll do it for $449. I'm going back to the basics for a while and I'm hoping Apple will do the same.

The iPhone SE just seems like a timeless, refined piece of technology. When I had the 6s Plus, the 7 Plus, I was always thinking how uncomfortable they were to use and how I was frustrated that I dropped over $800 for each. I just got a 2017 MacBook Pro, and I'm not about to buy an iPhone that is close to the same price.

I think if apple were to have an SE phone that gets upgrade every 2 years it would be smart. You don't see them drastically changing the MacBook Pros design year over year. They just pack decent technology in a timeless package.

There is something about feeling like you got a good deal on something, and it just working. I don't think I would feel that way if I had an X in my pocket for $1000.

How is Best Buy selling these prepaid for $140?! Thanks to OP and whoever posted the Best Buy price. I'm getting on board with this and selling my 7 to Apple or elsewhere.

Is the only way to multitask with double click home button? What's the early consensus on how SE will do with iOS11.

Wait....WHAT? So say I get ATT Pre-Paid iPhone SE for $140. Could I put my existing ATT Sim Card and just start using it right away?
People keep saying something about 6 months of service.

Best Buy is able to do this because of a promotion with at&t. The imei will only work with at&t or a comparable provider partnered with at&t.

I've heard good things about ios11 on iPhone 6s and SE.

Multitasking requires double home only or you can install the accessibility floating shortcut.

[doublepost=1505448632][/doublepost]I have been told it will work with At&t postpaid. The reviews on Best Buy say so.

You can pop in your postpaid AT&T SIM card right away. The 6 months is if you want unlock for use with other carriers. This phone is universal and works with CDMA, too. ;)

The AT&T Prepaid Kit is $200 regular price and AT&T is currently running a similar discount promo as Best Buy on their website. I expect they're forgoing profit on the device itself in order to get you on their service. At $35/mo prepaid for 6 months, that's $210 for service cost.

My SE is up and running! I feel like I don't want to put it in a case..it just feels so good in my hand. But, I do know that's playing with fire. Hahah. This thing is a speedy little demon. I feel right at home on it. Thrilled with my decision thus far.

I think its good to have a case for peace of mind, and certain scenarios, but I’ve used my SE 99% of the time without a case

Its the inverse for my 7+ and 6s+ and 6+ I had before that

The size and ergonomics dont eliminate any possibility of dropping it, obviously, but its way easier to hold imo

Congrats on the purchase, in any case (no pun intended)

People see SE two different ways:

Sucky Edition/Cheap Edition

or Sleeper Edition

I happen to fall under the latter ;)

I still don't regret paying full retail for my 64gb when I did (@ $499)

AND it's still the only SE to get a jailbreak. 32/128 configs shipped with 10.2.1 and hence, unjailbreakable to date.
I bought my 64GB once the new 128GB became available. I saved $50 and didn't need the 128GB capacity. Other then the storage, there was no difference in the newer "model" release.

I've started using my SE now and I may even get another one, this time the 128GB because my 6S+ is starting to have random fast battery discharges Apple says it's normal. I will not buy an iPhone 8 or X.

Welp. Just ordered one of the $140 prepaid that I will use my post-paid SIM in. if anything for use whenever I want a smaller phone for when I am more active or travelling.
By the way, sometimes Best Buy doesn't scan it properly so the iPhone SE is flagged as stolen in AT&T's database. When that happens, AT&T will suspend your postpaid SIM card after maybe 15-60 minutes of installing it on the SE. No way to get around that because that's needed to register/link the device to your number. You can get the restriction lifted by emailing attprepaidsupport@att.com or gophonesolution@att.com your name, phone number, IMEI along with a copy of your receipt/order confirmation.

I wouldn't even bother calling 611. Sometimes, the customer service reps may not be particularly knowledgeable.

I dropped mine in my soda tonight. I love mine but tonight for one minute I wish it had been a plus size iPhone as it would not have fit in the cup lol.

I'll never forget when I got my new 6S on launch day (coming from a 5) and immediately dropped that slippery soap bar three or four times the same day, ending up with some nasty scratches on the corners. Somehow I've been able to go back to the 5/SE size without dropping it once yet!

I do have my SE in a case though - one of things I like about it is that Apple's leather case properly encases the whole phone itself, and then I've got a glass screen protector on the front which (because the screen is flat and not rounded etc) again actually covers the whole screen and is pretty much invisible. It's almost as if the designer actually thought about these things!

It all adds very little bulk, especially since the phone is so small already.

The official Apple saddle brown leather case is the best!

Does anything bigger than an SE lose the "comfortable coziness" of both the screen and device of an SE?

One of the main intentions behind the iPhone SE, is the one had to use in a smaller form factor. So anything particularly larger, I think you lose the comfortability factor.

I'm semi-tempted, partly because of the home button is a real button but force touch. With the my SE's home button not working too well, its a temptation. Plus I get a better camera, barometer and faster processor (not that I'll notice that).

The SE gives me great hold-ability, fits nicely in all of my pockets and its nicely sized. I just like the form factor.

SE is an awesome product. I can't knock it at all.

And when you pick it up, you instantly remember everything you loved about iPhones in the beginning. It just feels great in the hand.
