Talk to me like a 3rd grader. No clue what either of those are and I dont want to brick my phone. :)
It's not difficult to root but you will have to get your hands dirty.

If you're up for the challenge, I'm sure someone can direct you to the right place in XDA or if you don't mind waiting a bit, I can give you links later.

Franco is a modified kernel for the N6 I'm just not sure if it will run on stock ROM.

Yea no rush at all as I am not sure I am ready for that unless the consequences of messing it up are minor. :)

If like me you do not want to go down that route out of fear. Use chainfires own app to colour correct if you want. Just use custom settings.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.lumen

Alternatively I use this one too
Set to twilight
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.quickdoc.screenbalance

I appreciate both of you and both options.

I went to a darker area versus by my desk and broad daylight and the screen popped a little more and looks a lot better. I guess its a pretty bad performer in the sun.

On those apps MRU, do you have a setting you prefer to tinker with?

In case anyone cares, these are my values at the moment.

I'm using Franco kernel (FKupdater)

Yep in screenbalance I would just set it to twilight.

In CF.lumens custom adjustment and simply take green and red down a fraction each.

Is it hard to flash ROMs and kernels. I'll be honest it often seems very intimidating when you read threads on XDA. The results are fantastic but the instructions to get there seem very daunting always.

Truthfully, there's always a small part of me that fears I'm going to brick the device but I still feel confident enough to do it.

As long as you follow instructions, you should be fine. Download the right files and a couple of command lines and that's it!

To me, bringing the device back to stock is a little more of a daunting task.

My feelings are, if you're an android user, you must root.

Root your phone. A Nexus phone is meant to be rooted.

I rooted my Nexus 6 straight out of the box immediately, and then installed TWRP Recovery so I could flash ROM's. I don't even think I booted up the original phone more than once, before I did all this.

Chroma ROM is the #1 ROM for the Nexus 6 with over 1 million downloads. It just makes the phone fly even faster, while giving even better battery life by a good margin, and gives even more customization options well beyond stock.

Do you lose warranty when rooted on a nexus?.

There's a multi tool I believe to do all this isn't there?
You do void warranty but if you need to RMA, you can bring the device back to stock; I've done it in the pass and never had any issues.

I'd stay away from multi tools but do your research.

This guy makes the best, foolproof and easiest videos and how to guides on Rooting and ROM'ing your Android device. I am no Programmer, and even I can follow these instructions easy as pie :) Best way is to have 2 Browsers opened up, one with his YouTube vdioe playing, and the other browser for his written how to guide, with all the pictures, and links, etc...

The whole process will take you less than 20 minutes, and then you can install and flash Chroma ROM, and have a brand new freshly baked custom ROM installed, making this phone ten million times better IMO.

+1 on chroma; I'm on the latest version and definitely worth a try.

I am having issues encrypting my phone so I can add my exchange work email.

It alerts me it must be encrypted.
Says to charge and plug your phone in.
I did this.
Clicked encrypt.
It goes to the green android guy screen.
Reboots with the animation.
Goes to the lock screen and no encryption occurred.
Cycles through the steps above over and over.

Any ideas?

This phone is encrypted out of the box so not sure why you're getting this.

i googled and some folks at android central forums had an answer.
It required me to put a pin which I did but the option to have it checked where it says "require pin on start up" was what was lacking.

Checked that and we are in business.

I am not a fan of GMAIL as my work email driver so hoping to see what else is out there.

Try TouchDown. Not the prettiest but has all the functionality of Outlook on a desktop.

Are badges and the ability to make the google bar transparent or remove it part of rooting?

Annoying google bar and man I am missing quick reply on the lock screen from iOS
