I don't sell my old tech, I have kept almost all of it. However, the big difference between me and the OP is I wait until something either completely breaks or becomes generally unusable such as when computers and phones stop software support. My iPhone 5 still works, but my bank apps no longer work on it.

The only real reason I don't have somethings anymore is because I have moved around quite a bit so some stuff has gone missing over the years. My oldest piece of working equipment is a portable National cassette recorder from 1965. I have all my old cell phones, I think 8, from 1996 to present day. My Ericsson GH688 still works, the only reason I can't use it on the go is I can't get a new battery for it. I also need to count the laptops I have stashed all over the place.

But to this day the most phenomenal piece of electronics I have ever owned is my 2011 MBP 13". 10 years on and it still works as good as it did 10 years ago. They can bury/cremate me with it.

The Matrix - Cypher:
You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize?
Ignorance is bliss.
Cypher was also a real jerk with no moral compass who betrayed and murdered his friends, and was himself offed in the end.

Where’d you all trade them online? I was looking at trade prices wanting to upgrade more often but was discouraged at the low prices I saw.
I don't trade them online. I have a decent network of people that are normally interested if I am selling something. Mostly because it's a fairly new device and rarely a base model of anything.

I generally ask around before I make a new purchase to get an idea on if someone would be interested in my current device.

Sorry that doesn't help but just sharing my process.

Well, guess it’s official, the nay sayers at macrumors will always have their day no matter how innocent a post. They apparently dont mind threads declaring the latest version of whatever is a dud before its even in the stores, or posts that rip Apple for being a for profit business, or posts that demand desktop performance from ultra light laptops, but heaven forbid someone is happy with their purchase and want to post about it to inject some positivity. No, we can’t have that!

Thanks OP I enjoyed your post. But then, i enjoy my M2 MBA too

I always tell people that if you don’t mind being a year behind the latest and greatest you can upgrade every year for half to 2/3 the price by following me on Swappa. 😊

Some like clothes, some like jewels. Others like fancy food, while still others like plays and concerts. Me, I like a desk full of gadgets to tinker with.

I wish more people on these forums understood that, and stopped telling others how misguided their priorities are. I wish we could be excited for each other, rather than having a judgy holier-than-thou attitude I've been seeing more and more on these forums. I wish we were allowed to enjoy our tech without fear of being mocked for not going with what others believe to be the "better" choice.

Agree wholeheartedly. There is not a group of people on earth more concerned with getting the best deal, the best performance per dollar, and stretching one's dollar than the tech community.

In other areas of life, it's OK to spend more for less tangible benefits, but when it comes to tech, only one facet of value is allowed to be considered. There is no room for design, aesthetics, the way using something feels - it's just a raw comparison of performance per dollar.

That being said, you'll never, ever convince that group of the tech community to see it differently. They'll never understand, and that's fine. They don't have to. There is a reason Apple is the richest company in the world, and it is because of the things that those people don't understand. That's why they get so salty about it and think Apple enjoyers are stupid.

It is a complete waste of time trying to get them to understand. You just adopt that chad energy and do what you want to do and you'll enjoy your tech hobby even more. That's what I do, never been happier.

I don't have any practical reason for doing so - my M1 was perfectly fine.

I sold my M1 MBA, just ordered an M2 MBA, and I feel like a kid at Christmas.

Tech is a hobby of mine. I like the latest and greatest gadgets, and don't mind spending money on them. It's certainly not from any kind of 'need', but rather a 'want'. I know this, and there's nothing wrong with that mindset.

As some have called it, it may be a "fool's game" to some, but I could say the same for the way many others spend their time, energy, and money. That is something I would never do, however, as it is their life to live as they see fit - to each their own.

As I said, tech is not a collection of tools for me, it's a hobby. I don't want to just read about the latest gadgets and gizmos, I want to feel them, to use them, and to truly appreciate the design and engineering that goes into them. I can't afford all the tech I would like to try, but I can afford to take a financial hit every few years in order to sell my current device and buy the newest one I'm interested in. This year, it's the M2 MBA.

Apple investors love you back 😍

I gotta look you up on Swappa! :). I'm always a bit worried buying some tech (phones in particular) secondhand without knowing someone a bit (even just seeing them around on a virtual message board, haha).

I keep my equipment in near mint condition. My eBay and Swappa feedback confirms it. Send me a DM in September if you want an iPhone 13 Pro. 😉

I'm not sure what you're looking for here or why you posted other than validation that your tech and money spending habits are not ill-advised. But, even then, I'm not really sure why you felt that was necessary.

I consult for people shopping for Macs and PCs all the time. I'll never contest someone's wants. I will, however, totally contest when someone tries to justify them with reasoning that's a load of crap. If you just want to blow money on the latest stuff or sell your current stuff to keep trading up because you're addicted to that thrill of unboxing a new Apple toy; I'm not going to tell you that's dumb. It's your money, and it's your tech (and again, I'm not too sure why this needs to be spelled out by you or anyone else on here unless you've been insecure about it [which is, frankly, a completely different issue]).

But if you espouse some kind of rational logic to it to try to justify it, I think that's when people will try to tell you that you're doing it wrong.

Frankly, the people that hide their wants with BS logic are the ones that drive me nuts. Call it what it is; you wanted to buy the thing and you have no logic to justify it. THAT'S OKAY. Just don't waste people's time to try to justify it when it's wants and not logical or rational needs (not saying you're doing that at all here; but I think that's where people start to go on the offensive about it).

there are 121 posts before yours, so apparently, it's something people want to discuss. and doing something for the joy of it doesn't need a rational justification. everything does not have to be logical, practical... or justified. sometimes, doing something simply because it's what you want to do should be perfectly okay.

I didn’t even sell my M1, I just bought an M2 because I wanted one. You do you!
I have a 16” M1 Max MBP that I love, and it greatly outperforms the M2 MBA, but for a moment, even I wanted to trade-in for it just because I love the idea of owning a dark blue laptop. Hmmm… Marketing 🤷‍♂️

I don't think you're posting to the same MacRumors.com forums that I post to. The culture on here is nitpicky as all hell when it comes to posts that the community deems to be needless.

Also, if you actually read what I wrote, you'd see that I'm not knocking the poster for spending money on whatever tech he or she wants. I'm finding it odd that this needs to be stated for external validation given that most people don't debate with wants, but rather with wants masqueraded as needs.
