How can the case be 0.17mm thick with the individual strands being 0.15mm thick?
Must be 170mm?
Something is wrong with the numbers, I agree. But the case is definitely not 170mm. Perhaps they meant its 1.7mm thick? This would potentially accommodate two layers of the weave plus the filler

On the other side of the equation, it's also not environmentally friendly by getting a new iPhone each year :)

Obviously there's a hole in the market for people that want leather iPhone cases for some enterprising company(s) to fill (guessing solutions existed prior to Apple dropping their line).

Will be interesting to see if Apple keeps selling these for more than a year.

I appreciate that the FineWoven material is produced from recycled plastic, but isn’t the sustainability only effective if the case itself continues to be recycled at end of life?

If these end up in landfill, I don’t see how they’re any better for the environment than leather.
The old leather cases often wound up in landfills too, along with the negative environmental impacts of leather.

Instead of producing fully new plastic to create this case, they recycled existing plastic. Out of the same plastic they got two products instead of “one” (hypothetical, obviously the recycled plastic came from many different products). It still ultimately cuts down on the amount of plastic going into landfills, and at least part of the case could also be recycled, although plastic cannot be recycled indefinitely.

In any case, any bit of new plastic reduction at scale really helps.

Is Apple saying the millions of cow's lives will now be spared as we don't need their skin/leather for cases?
I thought leather was basically a by product of animals that were already being slaughtered for other reasons.
One could argue that a reduction in leather usage will make cattle farming less profitable. This leads to increased beef prices, which leads to decreased beef consumption. More of a long-term thing though.

I'm glad theyre switching away from leather. it always seemed odd an environmentally conscious company would promote leather...although they did have great leather products. this new material is interesting, it feels great, dont know about longevity but its not bad. they can possibly learn from car manufactures on other synthetic materials like synthetic leathers. the VW synthetic leather isn't bad but I'm not familiar with its components if theres anything terribly bad (partial leather or plastics). but so far I like the fine woven material...might not be better than leather product wise.

Nah, shareholders and Apple will twist it into an environmentally friendly initiative to replace your devices, all of them, every release cycle.
Shareholders don’t care about sustainability and planet. Why would they?

So let’s just continue using leather & contributing to the animal slaughter industry that does even more harm to the environment?
Good leather that is maintained will outlast these plastic cases.

As far as sourcing the leather it’s most often a byproduct of the meat industry.

While I am a vegetarian and hate the idea of killing an animal I am not in favor of legislating the meat industry out of business nor am I in favor of lab grown “meat”.
Greaaat. Seriously? The point is we’re celebrating THIS move by Apple. Apple is a HUGE company, and by doing away with their leather products, they are sending a strong message to the world. That is GOOD thing. Every step they make to become greener & more ethical is.
If Apple was truly concerned about the environment they would provide software updates or at least security updates for the hundreds of thousands of pieces of functioning hardware that they have deemed obsolete.

Furthermore more they could significantly reduce electronic waste by selling user upgradeable hardware.

I mean I'd hate to gift this to someone only for it to last less than a year or it looks gross due to stains of everyday use. Then you've got professionals that may sit their phone down on a desk, conference room table or restaurant.
It’s the gift you will keep on giving as it will be considered a consumable.

I think they will discontinue them as soon as they see return percentages, although that will result in a major loss of face for Apple. Unfortunately, these days ideology and groupthink often prevail over common sense and reason.

Another alternative is they reduce prices drastically -- perhaps as much as 50 percent -- to stimulate sales. Then, after stocks are depleted, this execrable product is silently discontinued.

I guess the upcoming Apple Car Pro Max Ultra Plus One will feature FineWoven steering wheels and seating material
