This app is great. Been using it for a couple of weeks and now that synching is supported it's even more useful! Desktop client is working smoothly, just a couple of things I've noticed. Could it possible to sync/import reminders to the desktop client? Also clicking on the columns to sort (I think this was mentioned above) and dragging to reorder columns (like in iTunes or Mail) would be sweet. Finally perhaps an optional badge icon for number of assignments to be completed. Again thanks for listening and the discussion.

PS Push would be awesome, too!

got the new update, but my iphone won't find my macbook on the same network to sync info from my mac over. just keeps searching. I have the sync page open in the desktop app with the profile set, but the iphone won't find it :/

Did you actually push the sync button on the desktop client? After you get the little pop up that says "iHomework Session Started" then go to the iPhone and hit the sync button then it should be able to see your computer.

Also I kind of wish the password was option :(

I cannot sync AT ALL, as soon as I press sync on the iHomework desktop app it immediately says "session did not go so well. Failed to" I tried pressing sync first on my iphone and then on the desktop app with the same results.

... could it possibly be the secure network that I'm on? I can't get gmail from my apple mail to download (via iphone or desktop) on this server either...

I'm getting the same message. Can anyone offer a solution to this?

Hey everyone,

Seems like the "Session didn't go so well. Failed To" issue is showing up for some people:

1. I'm incredibly embarrassed that I forgot to click the "Wrap Text" button on the label so that the entire error message actually displays.

2. Also working on trying to identify what is causing the issue.

Even in this thread it seems to be happening with some people and not with others - since the post right about Ruffian says that syncing is working fine. It appears to be an issue with the desktop version (which would be better since I can update that faster), but I'm still working on it.

I tried pressing sync first on my iphone and then on the desktop app with the same results.

Does the mobile version appear to be searching correctly? It should display the "Searching for iHomework sessions..." and the activity indicator should be spinning.

For everyone experiencing the "Session didn't go so well..." a possible solution could be to disable/enable Bonjour.

To do this open Terminal and type:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

Enter your password and then type:

sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

Make sure to quit iHomework before doing this and relaunching it afterwards. Also, those that are experiencing this problem - any chance you're running Snow Leopard?

at the risk of sounding really mac-dense... can you explain this in more detail... how do I open Terminal... and do I type the whole thing that you've put (sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemon.plist) to the extent that I can just copy and paste exactly that??

not running snow leopard, just regular leopard

To open terminal press command + space type in "Terminal" and press enter

Then type in (or paste) what is written on the first like, hit enter, it will ask for password, type it in press enter, then paste the last line.

I did what was explained above- it didn't seem to do anything at all? App still doesn't sync. It did, however, tell me that my "notebook licenses are in use" (talking about my circus ponies notebook program) not quite sure what the correlation is there? ...

any other suggestions???

You got this message when resetting Bonjour or when trying to run iHomework again?

Still working on the cause of the problem. Originally thought it was a Snow Leopard issue but as you mentioned you're running Leopard. It seems to be a difficult one to reproduce (unless I disable Bonjour) but it's happening enough that it's definitely an issue.

Could it be the router since sync uses the network?

Dunno much about networks/routers... :(

Thanks for a great app! I will be honest and say that the only reason that I considered buying this app is this thread. It was a toss up between this and a couple of others but the support you have given through this thread and others comments made me chose this one! Thanks!

Have found one small "glitch" that doesn't really affect the working of the app (iphone not desktop). On the "Teacher Info" page, after you have selected a teacher from the "teachers" list, their photo does not show up, but it does if you move onto the "info" page and in the address book itself. I suspect that the image just isn't referenced for the "teacher Info" page but I'm no expert and obviously you will know better than I do as you are designing the app!

I must say though that now I have been playing with it for a bit it is really really good. Thanks!

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

Glad you checked out this thread! The "bug" you're talking about really isn't a bug because the image in the Teacher Info page is just a place holder. While it's functioning correctly as just an image placeholder I understand that it's not the behavior you expect (it should show the image for the contact).

The idea of a teacher as a contact needs to be revisited. When I first created the app I really thought it was the best way to do things. Now I'd say it's 50/50 of users that like contacts and those who don't. The other problem is that since they're contacts linked to your iPhone (touch) address book they're not supported in the desktop version (big problem).

I'm 21 and a senior at Virginia Tech (US college - I see you're from London). I started the app last year as kind of a fun side project and I had no idea what I was getting myself into :)

Still working on the "Session didn't go so well." issue. I'm working with a few users that are experiencing the problem to help try and figure it out. I appreciate the support and patience!

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the work you're putting into this. I'm sure others, such as myself, are also college students and use your application. I think I speak for all of us when we say we understand the workload you're getting from classes, so the effort you're investing in this app is very much appreciated.

Good luck with the syncing fix!

I solved my error issue on Ihomework sync

I was having the same problem as everyone else with the error message stating on the desktop version that the program failed to (or something of this nature). I tried over ten times to no avail. I then deleted the profile on the desktop and made up a new name and password and voila! it worked. So my suggestion is delete the profiles that is not letting you sync and make up another one and it should work. Happy Trails!

Delete Your Profile. Make a New One. Live Happily Ever After

YES!! It Works! I deleted my profile and made a new one and the Sync worked. The profile that did not work was entitled "Copious Amount of Work". My new (and functional) profile is called "Rob". Perhaps it has something to do with the number or characters or spaces in the name of the profile.

Kudos to the person who suggested this fix.

Also, to the app writer- the app is amazing. I know how crazy college can get, so the fact that you are so responsive to user comments is really great. Thanks!

You hit the nail on the head (I sound old saying that)! I got on this forum to announce that the problem has been found and the cause is the length of the display name and password.

What is amazing is if I had checked this forum earlier I would have found the problem that much sooner!

The issue is the service name that is used for Bonjour when you start a session. When the Display Name and Password reach greater than 16 characters (I think it's actually 17 but I'm playing it safe) it breaks the service name and causes the issue you guys are seeing.

A temporary fix is to make sure your display name and password do not combine for more than 16 characters. I realize this is a terrible limitation and a real fix will have to coincide with a mobile update (which means introducing the app store approval process).

I thank everyone so much for your patience and help! If only I had checked Macrumors earlier :)

Feel free to PM me or email me if you have any questions at all!

Copy and Paste

Is anyone else having the problem that you can't copy and paste from another document into the iHomework desktop version? I have the assignments in electronic form and would love to just copy and paste vs retyping all the reading, etc. Can the developer let me know if this option may be in a future version. Also I love the idea of the tab for readings that you need to do

Other issues with iHomework Desktop

Hey Paul, sent you an email about this but thought I'd post it here too in case anyone else was having a similar problem.

I put in a ton of assignments and synced them to my iPod touch with no problem.

I went back in to iHomework and now, for some reason, I can't edit any of the assignments. Also, when I try to add a new assignment, I can't put an assignment type in because the drop down menu is completely blank with no options (which means that I actually can't add a new assignment).

I've tried deleting the app entirely and downloading it again but I still have the same problem. Any help would be amazing on this issue because I love the app and would really like to start using it!

This seems to be another sync related issue that is popping up in some places. Not sure what is causing it just yet because the scenario is pretty straightforward - sync your data and types disappear.

Something you could try is on the mobile version click the "Reset" button in the Sync window. This will cause your phone to send all of it's data to the desktop version. Let me know if that changes anything.

I'm quickly working on updates for both apps that will address many of the sync bugs that are starting to pop up.

Thanks everyone!
