Spotlight. When I used Win7 last year on a Netbook it still had the horrible Windows search feature. Spotlight is a much better search application.

Has Windows incorporated a back up system on par with Time Machine yet?

After that you have just the general usability of the OS, which OS X excels at.

Windows backup isn't great, but there are great 3rd party alternatives. Oops! Backup is the clone of Time Machine, but for Windows.

Well, enjoy your inevitable contact(s) with Dell's Customer Annoyance dept.

Everyone I know with a Dell has had problem after problem.

while on the consumer side i totally agree with you, the business side is totally different.

Dell's business support is by far the best ive ever dealt with. Its a widely accepted fact in the business world. We ALL run dells for a reason. Ive only seen apple products on the business side in business like architecture, design, etc. Other businesses (finance, wholesale, pretty much everything else) run on PCs, and those pcs are almost always dells. they have fixed all our problems either same day or next day.

don't get me wrong for my personal computers i have a custom built W7 PC and a MBP. But for the business its all dell and going to stay dell for a long time to come.

I seriously doubt that. All 60 machines? Give it up. I work at a school and we have a ton of dells and never a issue with any of them period. Xps machines are high quality machines and this is from experience not from a fanboy like yourself.

Thats why in my post I said its NOT normal but it did happen. Bad RAM and bad graphics cards. The bad ram actually manifested itself looking like a graphics card issue. Once these were replaced we'd only have a machine go down once or twice a month.

The Dells were for our client and Dell wouldn't replace any of them because they claimed that the problems did not happen on U.S. soil (which was false since the machines were located at an APO address which is U.S. soil).

And don't call me a fanboy. You have NO idea what type of work I do IT wise and you know nothing about me. Its obvious your not in IT if you claim to have never had a problem with a Dell machine. They keep me employed.

Maximizing the window would be the exact opposite of taking advantage of all 27" of real estate. For example, websites aren't designed to be viewed horizontally so you can get the entire website with a window about 40% the width of the screen. You could place the Safari window all the way to the left. Then the right 60% could be utilized by using the top 1/3 for iTunes, middle 1/3 for Mail, and the lower 1/3 with a chat program.

I think you might have misunderstood what I was trying to get across. Yes I could do what you suggest but then that would be far to small for my needs. I did say I wear spectacles and I don't like to squint at the screen. With RightZoom and NoSquint I can make the windows maximise, just like Windows and have the fonts permanently set to whatever size I choose, usually 120%. This is how I like my screen to look as I find it most comfortable. I don't want a large screen so that I can have multiple windows open at once on screen I only want the one window set to maximum. I'm a man anyway so can't multi-task. :D

Now i'm not wanting to get shot down in flames here but.........

In a semi impulse buy last Thursday i bought myself an entry lvl 21" Imac , my first venture into the Mac World from my local PC World store here in the UK.

Now i know PC World , maybe not the best thing to do in the first place but i have been looking at getting a Mac for the last few weeks after seeing a neighbours in action. Basically fell in love with the screen more than anything else :)

I was trying to decide instore whether to just buy a replacement lap top or a desk top pc when i saw their Apple section which had all the new range on display. I had sort of ruled out the Mac as i have no experince with the OS and i couldn't just buy a new machine on looks alone could i?....well i did :)

Now i'm not exactly regreting it as the OP has and i am trying to get to grips with it but maybe i should have been a tad more restrained lol.

Does anyone know if Apples 14 day refund policy only applies to machines bought either direct from them or in an Apple store? I'm assuming if bought from a third party such as PC World or Amazon this option does not apply?

I'm not set on getting rid of it , i am going to perservere but i'm finding after decades of pc use my Winows mind set is well "set" more than i thought it would be.
I'm also going to have to buy a copy of Windows 7 for bootcamp as i'm really wanting to play the upcoming Star Wars MMO (another £100 or so) but i'm not a big gamer so i thought i would get by on the Mac for just general browsing , photo and video work.

I can't easily put into words why i'm swaying more back to a pc it's just this niggling thing in the back of my mind i dont get when i buy a new pc.

Don't get me wrong the Screen is a thing of beauty and my desk has never looked so tidy with the wireless KB and mouse and i may well over time get well used to it as many switchers have but i'm feeling if i have a get out clause i might want to use it :(

Any advice appreciated.

Oh Hibernia, PC World, come on, weren't all the alarm bells going off in your head shouting loudly don't do it? Do you not have a John Lewis or an Apple store relatively close by you could have purchased from? I'm really not sure how you will fair with returning a computer to PC World. You could always claim it's faulty then when they offer to exchange it decline and ask for your money back - they do have a 28 day returns policy with money back for faulty goods. Good luck with that.

The only thing I like is the monitor. I invested like $3,ooo. I just know this isn't for me. I'm gonna go with dell xps.

Though it is too bad you don't like your Mac. I would recommend against the Dell XPS.

If you don't like the idea of building a high end computer yourself and saving a lot of money while getting higher quality parts. I would go with a Falcon Northwest rig.

Actually I have been in IT for 20 years. You sir obviously have no clue what you are talking about. Saying all 60 had issues? All machines have issues. But there is no way all 60 of your machines had a problem. No way.

Yes, we have Dell, and HP machines at my work (which btw I am the director for IT) and know for a fact that we have had no issues with ANY of them. Now our HP laptops on the other hand have had issues but that was a given due to the price we paid.

I am sure you are just some Desktop Helpdesk person or support or you would have more history in IT than this.

And after reviewing your posts just now, you are no doubt a Apple fanboy. Get a life seriously dude. You praise and hate all Windows, Android, or anything not made by Apple. I just saw it in many of your posts. You hate everything that isn't a MAC. You really think you are open minded and telling the truth.

You know what, Dell wouldn't be where they are today if they had a reputation of selling 60 machines and all of them failed like you say. So quit your lying.

Unfortunatly i'm a good 2 hours from either of the closest Apple Stores around here and almost the same to John Lewis in Edinburgh and i don't drive :)
PC World is just 20 mins in the bus so it's my nearest retailer.

Surely if i claim it's faulty they would check it out and see it's not? , i'm not the dishonest type and wouldnt feel comfortable doing this. Blame my age , at 50 i maybe should have known better :(

I'm still perservering but do admit i'm struggling somewhat and out of my comfort zone , lol.

Hibernia, what is it that causing you to have second thoughts?
Is it just the different way OSX works?
You could join the local Edinburgh Mac Users Group or the Group I'm in, GlasMug (Glasgow Mac Users Group) and they can help you get to grips with it all.

Cheers, Macjim.

To be honest it's a mix of little things which patience might well sort out , it's the little things that are starting to gnaw away at me and giving me these doubts that i spent a load of cash somewhat rashly :)

Keyboard , Magic Mouse , Safari , and the obvious quirky differences in operating system.
I know i can replace the kb and mouse but that involves more cost.
I'm probably going to have to also buy Windows 7 for bootcamp as the long awaited new MMO i'm wanting is not coming out in a Mac version.

I was wanting to find out if Apple might refund me under their 14 day deal but i was afraid buying it from PC World will have knobbled that option.

That being the case i'll just get on with it but if the refund option had existed i think i would have taken advantage of it.

Seriously - I made the move from PC to Mac in the last six months. Now have a 2011 21.5" iMac, a Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini. It does everything the PC did and more.

No more constant update downloads and reboots like I had with the PC. No serious virus worries. iDisk use seamlessly built into OS. Fast. Great choice of programs.

All the Macs are quiet. PCs were all noisy.

When I need a PC, I run Windows virtually using VMware Fusion. XP Pro runs super fast on the iMac with Windows7 not far behind.

If you are going back to a PC, then stay away from Dell. Go buy some quality from HP/Compaq. Dell systems in my opinion are horrible and overpriced.

JMHO

Do not call me a liar. You can form what ever ill informed opinion you want about be but you were not there, you did not have to deal with Dell, you did not have co-workers who worked for Dell trying to call people they knew at Dell to get the situation resolved and you didn't have to put in an order for new graphics cards and ram.

And don't call me a fanboy. Yes, I like Mac, its because I fix windows servers and desktops for a living but because I have a preference doesn't mean I'm a "fanboy". If thats the case I can call you a Dell fanboy. You just can't handle for some reason that people get bad batches of things. Working in IT like you claim you should be used to this but I guess you aren't as experienced as you think you are or you simply don't work for near as large of company as I do.

Not to mention why so defensive? Dell doesn't make the ram or graphics cards, they simply use them in their computers.

As for Android, I'd love to see you prove my points about Android wrong. You simply can't. They are fact, not opinion. (Hence why Google announced they will be working to address them).

You are a waste of time. Like all your other posts, you think you are right and no one can change your mind. Enjoy your dream and lies.

I had the same problem when I got just a MacBook but continued using pcs for my main machine. It wasn't til I got sick and tired of the windows errors and crashes and slowdowns that I said to hell with it and installed osx on my machine and have used only osx then. Now I'd never use anything else. 24 hours isn't even close to the amount of time you need to dedicate to make the switch.

I hope I don't have buyers remorse when I do make the plunge to a mbp

So used to windows

I hate how the apple has one big a$$ mouse button

How does that work with autocad ???

I also found his comments a bit suspect

Perhaps when he said 60 he meant 6

Meh. Just a troll.

This sounds just too far fetched to be true; Really, who would drop that kind of ching on a machine then decide to go with a Dell that is a totally different design? Either the OP is a younger, quite, inexperienced person or we could a have a Troll OP.
LOL
:D

Or you didn't read the entire thread and jump to conclusions about the original poster that could as well be attributed to your very young age, because he or she has clearly posted his or her age, which is 50.

Unfortunately as we age, it gets harder to adjust to a complete change. In the case going from PC to Mac, there's certainly "cultural shock", because OSX is vastly different from Windows. So, yeah, I can totally see someone expressing remorse over spending ton of money on brand new computer and feeling uncomfortable with it.

I paid something like $5300 on mine :(

(I am from Brazil, and here these things are much expensive)

But it "worth" it.

The single button Mac mouse was ditched at about the same time Win2000 came out to an adoring fan base...
The magic mouse makes a PC mouse look like something out of the stone age.
Tip, go to an Apple store, then come back here with a big slice of humble pie :D

I hope I don't have buyers remorse when I do make the plunge to a mbp

Is it in USD for iMac? Jeez... o_O

That's just crazy.

Yes, $5300 in dollars. More than R$8300,00 in reais.

Yes, it is crazy. Brazilians have to pay at least 60% more to the government for anything that are made in another country.

Core i7, 8gb ram, from the Brazilian Apple Store.
